The first bang against the security door made everyone jump.

The second nearly shook it off its hinges.

“AHHH!”

A woman screamed and stumbled backward, knocking over a display rack. Bottles and packets scattered across the floor, but nobody spared them a glance.

The guard stared at Ethan, clearly waiting for him to make a move. For several seconds, neither man spoke. Then Ethan slowly lowered his gaze.He looked at the guard’s hand gripping Zoey’s arm before letting out a quiet breath.“Forget it.”Zoey’s eyes widened.“Ethan?”The guard seemed surprised too. He had expected the newcomer to argue or perhaps throw a punch. Instead, Ethan simply stepped aside.A smug smile spread across his face.“That’s more like it. At least you know your place.”He released Zoey’s arm and gave her a little push.“Go with him. You’re lucky someone came to claim you. Otherwise, you’d be sleeping in those filthy tents like the rest of them.”Zoey rubbed her wrist, looking at Ethan in disbelief. The guard pointed toward the dilapidated section.“When you’re able to show your worth, you can come over to the better half. Until then, stay where you belong.”He scoffed and turned around.“Let’s go. I have better things to do.”Zoey hesitated, looking between Ethan a

The moment they entered the base, a soldier stepped forward and raised his rifle.“Stop! Everyone in a line!”The rescued civilians froze.“Put your bags on the ground. All belongings will be inspected.”A middle-aged man immediately protested.“Why? We’re survivors! Your people brought us here!”“And now we’re telling you to put your bags down.”The guard pointed toward a long table beside the entrance.“Every newcomer must surrender fifty percent of their supplies to the base. Food, water, medicine, batteries, fuel—everything useful will be counted.”A wave of protests erupted.“Fifty percent?”“That’s half of everything we have!”“We nearly died collecting those supplies!”A second guard stepped forward, his expression cold.“Then you should have stayed outside.”The complaints stopped. The guard continued.“These supplies are used to feed soldiers, maintain the defenses, treat the injured, and protect everyone inside. If you don’t like the rules, you’re free to leave.”He gestured

The gunfire continued for another minute before the alley finally fell silent.Bodies of infected zombies littered the road. Some had their heads blown apart, while others lay twisted beneath the boots of the soldiers who had killed them.Ethan stood beside the wall, breathing heavily. He had seen people die before. He had watched friends get torn apart by infected creatures and had nearly lost his own life more times than he could count. But watching these soldiers work was something else entirely. They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t panic. They didn’t even look particularly troubled when a zombie they had just shot turned out to be a person they might have known before the outbreak. One soldier walked over to a corpse and kicked it aside to retrieve his ammunition.Another wiped the blood splashed across his rifle before checking the street ahead. It was as if they were cleaning up a minor inconvenience rather than killing creatures that had once been human beings.“Everyone still ali

Ethan stared at the security monitors in the command center. Outside Zoey’s apartment building, the infected had begun moving toward his armored vehicle. Their movements were strangely coordinated, almost as if they were responding to a command he couldn’t hear. The System’s warning remained in the corner of his vision. WARNING! ABNORMAL BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURE DETECTED. Multiple infected exhibiting synchronized behavior. Threat classification: Unavailable. Recommended action: Avoid direct engagement. Ethan’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel. Whatever was happening, he couldn’t afford to waste time figuring it out. Zoey was still trapped inside the building, and he had no intention of leaving her behind. He started the engine and slowly reversed, drawing the infected away from the entrance. Once he had enough distance, he accelerated around the building toward a service entrance on the opposite side. The infected followed. “Damn it.” He struck two that b
