Three Taps
The knock came on the ninth day of the Warden's peace.Silas was in the farm hall when the bell rang. It was a small brass bell Pike had wired to the surface hatch, and its voice was thin and dry, like a cough. Wren dropped the trowel she had been using on the seedbeds. Pike looked at Silas with his whole face asking the question."Stay here," Silas said.He climbed to the control room alone and pulled the lever that woke the hatch camera. The picture was bad, gray on gray, the storm blowing sideways across the lens. Then the wind dropped for a moment, and he saw them.Three figures stood at the hatch. They were bundled to the eyes in rags and plastic sheeting, and one of them held a hand up to the camera, palm out, the way you would show a dog you meant no harm. Behind them the ridge was a smear of white. They knocked again. Three taps, soft as a moth against glass.Silas felt something cold slide down the inside of his ribs. He had heard that knock before. He had opened a door to it
Terms
Silas went back to the crack alone the next night. He had argued with himself about it for most of the day, which was new. In the shelter he had never argued. He had made rules and followed them. Now he stood at the hatch with the rifle in his hand and found that he did not want to carry it, so he leaned it against the wall of the airlock and climbed out with nothing but a lantern and a folded blanket.Pike watched him go from the corridor and said nothing. Wren was asleep, or pretending to be. Silas did not check. The ash had stopped falling. It happened sometimes, a few hours of thin dead calm when the sky seemed to hold its breath. The ridge lay pale and ribbed under a moon he could barely see, and his boots made no sound on the old drifts. He walked the gully with the lantern shuttered to a slit and sat down in front of the crack exactly where he had knelt before. He set the blanket beside him. He did not know why. It seemed like something a person would offer.Time passed. He had
The Cage Manifest
Pike found the maps in the third hour of the morning, in a flat steel cabinet behind the commander's bed that Silas had walked past a dozen times."It was under the bunk frame," Pike said, hauling out a long drawer that screeched on its rails. "Somebody bolted it to the floor. I only saw it because Wren dropped her spoon."Wren, sitting cross-legged on the cot with a mug in both hands, did not look up. "I dropped it on purpose.""You did not.""I did a little."Silas let them bicker. The sound was strange in this room, which had held only silence and a dead man's handwriting. He knelt by the drawer and began to lift out the sheets. Most were what he expected. Survey maps of the mountain in faded blue ink, ventilation schematics, a hand-drawn plan of the farm hall with the botanist's name in the corner. He laid them on the floor one at a time and weighted the edges with boots and mugs. The tunnel appeared on none of them. Whoever built this place had not known the rock was hollow under
What Wren Knew
Wren ate like someone who expected the plate to be taken away. She sat on the floor of the commander's quarters with a bowl of reconstituted stew between her knees, hunched over it, one arm curled around the rim. Pike had offered her a chair twice. She had looked at it as if it were a trap. Silas said nothing about it. He sat on the cot with the rifle across his lap and waited until the bowl was scraped clean and she had licked the spoon."Now," he said. "The big one."Wren wiped her mouth on her sleeve. "You won't believe me.""I don't believe anyone. Tell me anyway."She thought about it. "It's not an animal. Not just one. My father said the first week, when the ash came down, there were soldiers in trucks, and they had something in cages. Something they were bringing north. Then the trucks stopped coming." She shrugged, a small hard movement. "He thought it got out."Pike shifted by the door. "Or it's just a mutation. Like the hounds on the east road.""Hounds don't wait," Wren sai
The Draught
Silas decided against sealing the tunnel on the first morning. He lay awake in the commander's cot and listened to the bunker breathe. The fans, the pumps, the faint tick of warming pipes. Under all of it was something thinner, a note he could not place until he stopped trying to hear it. It was the draught from the farm hall, crawling up the stairwell and through the cracks in the door. Something that made no sound at all, and he heard it anyway."You don't close a door until you know what's on the other side," he said into the dark.Pike, asleep on a pallet by the wall, did not stir. The boy had begged not to be left in the cell, and Silas had given him the floor of the commander's quarters instead. It was not kindness. A man locked in a box learns to hate the box. A man who sleeps near the door learns to guard it.At first light they went down with a coil of rope, two lanterns, and the sergeant's rifle. The tunnel mouth looked smaller than it had the night before. Silas knelt besid
The Level Below
Pike carried the lantern because Silas wanted both hands free. They went down by the service stairs behind the reactor, a narrow iron spiral that rang under their boots. The old commander had painted a number on the wall at every landing in white stencil, and Silas watched them count down: three, then four. At the fourth there was no door, only a heavy steel curtain, the kind that rolls up on a chain."What's in there?" Pike asked. His voice was careful. He had learned in two days to speak as if every word cost money."The commander wrote that only his crew knew.""They're all gone.""Yes."Silas took hold of the chain. It was cold and greasy, and it took both his arms to haul it. The curtain rose a foot at a time, rattling, and a smell came out from under it that he had not smelled in three months. Wet earth. Green things. He stopped pulling."Sir?" Pike said, and then seemed to hear himself and went red. "Sorry. I don't know what to call you.""Don't call me anything."He heaved the
