Julian’s lungs felt like they were full of broken glass. Every time he took a breath, a sharp, terrible pain stabbed his chest. He fell to one knee on the rocky ground, coughing up a mouthful of dark, red blood.

All around him, the air smelled like sulfur and burning flesh. This was Demon's Maw Valley, a dead wasteland of jagged black rocks and deep canyons. Right now, it was a battlefield.

Fifty feet away, a massive monster roared. It was an Abyssal Drake. The beast was the size of a two-story house, covered in thick, iron-black scales. It opened its massive jaws and fired a blast of dark, purple fire.

In the center of the battlefield stood Dominic Sullivan. Dominic was the captain of the Silvermoon Vanguard, and he looked like a hero from a storybook. He wore shining silver armor and held a sword crackling with blue lightning.

The Drake’s purple fire slammed directly into Dominic’s chest. The force was enough to melt steel. It should have burned Dominic alive. It should have ended the fight right there.

But Dominic did not even flinch. He just laughed.

Back on the edge of the battlefield, Julian screamed in agony.

A bright, glowing red chain of light connected Julian’s chest to Dominic’s back. It was invisible to normal people, but Julian could see it clearly. This was Julian’s unique ability. It was a Support skill called the Aura of Burden.

Instead of boosting his team’s speed or giving them extra magic, Julian’s skill did something completely different. It absorbed their pain, their fatigue, and their injuries.

When the Drake’s fire hit Dominic, the spell transferred the terrible heat through the red chain. Dominic felt nothing. Instead, the skin on Julian’s left arm suddenly bubbled and blackened with severe burns. Julian bit his tongue so hard it bled, trying to stop himself from crying out. If he broke his focus, the Aura of Burden would snap, and Dominic would die.

"Keep it up, Julian!" Dominic shouted over his shoulder. He sounded perfectly fine. He sounded completely energized. "I just need ten more seconds!"

Julian nodded weakly, even though his vision was spinning. He focused all his remaining magic on the red chain.

The Abyssal Drake swung its massive, spiked tail. It slammed into Dominic’s ribs with the force of a speeding truck. The sound of breaking bones echoed through the valley. But again, Dominic did not fall.

Julian’s vision went entirely black for a second. He heard a sickening crack inside his own body. Three of his ribs snapped. He collapsed completely into the dirt, clutching his side. He was taking all the damage. He was the only reason Dominic could keep fighting.

"Now! Die!" Dominic roared.

Because Dominic was completely free of pain and tiredness, he could push his magic past its normal limits. He raised his sword to the dark sky. A massive bolt of blue lightning crashed down from the clouds, striking his blade. Dominic swung the sword forward, sending a giant dragon made of pure lightning directly at the Abyssal Drake.

The lightning dragon crashed into the monster’s chest. The explosion was blinding. A shockwave of wind and dust swept over the valley, knocking Julian flat on his back.

The Abyssal Drake let out one final, pitiful cry. Then, its massive body crashed to the ground, completely dead.

Silence fell over the valley.

"We... we did it," Julian whispered. He was lying in a pool of his own blood. His arm was severely burned, his ribs were broken, and he was so tired he could not even lift his head. But a weak smile formed on his face.

A loud, magical chime rang through the air. Above the dead Drake, a large treasure chest slowly floated down. It was covered in gold and purple glowing runes. A Divine-tier loot chest. It was the rarest treasure in the world.

Julian heard footsteps. The rest of the team walked out from behind the large rocks where they had been hiding.

Caleb Sanchez, the team’s heavy tank, walked up with a big grin. Sophia White, the team’s mage, followed closely behind him. They had not done much in the fight. The plan was always the same: Julian took all the damage so Dominic could fight like a god.

"Wow," Caleb said, staring at the glowing chest. "Divine tier. We are going to be rich, Captain."

Dominic walked over to the chest. He looked perfect. His silver armor did not have a single scratch on it. His hair was not even messy. He was not breathing hard. He looked like a man who had just taken a walk in the park.

"Yes, we are," Dominic said. He placed his hand on the chest, claiming the loot for himself. "This is the final piece we needed."

Julian coughed, tasting more blood. "Dominic..." he called out, his voice weak and shaking. "Can I... can I get a healing potion? I took a lot of damage on that last hit. I think my ribs are broken."

Dominic turned around. He looked down at Julian.

There was no smile on Dominic’s face. There was no gratitude in his eyes. Instead, he looked at Julian the same way a person looks at a piece of garbage on the street.

Dominic walked slowly toward Julian.

"A healing potion?" Dominic asked softly.

"Yeah," Julian gasped. "Just a basic one. I can walk if I just get some of my health back. We did a great job today, brother."

Dominic stopped right next to Julian’s head. Then, without any warning, Dominic pulled back his heavy, armored boot and kicked Julian directly in the stomach.

Two gladiators charged at her from both sides. One held twin swords, the other held a spiked chain. Aria smiled. It was the first time she had smiled in years. Without the fear of killing her allies, her mind was totally clear. She could finally use her legendary class exactly how it was meant to be used. She dashed forward, leaving a trail of crimson light in the air. She slid under the swinging spiked chain, popping up directly in front of the man holding it. She grabbed his armor and threw him effortlessly over her shoulder, sending him crashing into the man with the twin swords. Both men tangled together and fell into the dirt in a pile of broken armor. Aria did not stab them. She did not cut their heads off. She simply stepped hard on their hands, crushing their fingers enough to make them drop their weapons. They groaned in pain, unable to fight back. Only Victor Kelly and one other gladiator were left. The fourth gladiator took one look at his defeated friends, dropped his

Aria stared at Julian’s hand as if it were a poisonous snake. She was bleeding, beaten, and covered in the dirty sand of the Blood Pit. The heavy, rusty broadsword was stabbed into the ground right next to her. The gold and black chain of light connected Julian’s chest to her heart, pulsing with a strange, warm energy. "Don't do this," Aria whispered, her voice shaking with fear. She tried to crawl backward, away from him. "You don't understand my curse! The moment I pick up a weapon, my core turns on. It will pull the life right out of your veins. You will dry up like a dead leaf. I don't want to kill you!"Julian did not move his hand away. His golden eyes were completely calm. Behind Julian, the giant gladiator, Victor Kelly, was struggling. The crushing gravity magic Julian had used on him was starting to fade. Victor let out a furious roar and smashed a red magical crystal on his belt. A wave of berserker energy washed over him, breaking Julian’s spell. Victor stood up, his fa

A drunk man standing next to Julian heard him and laughed. "You don't know the Cursed Valkyrie? Her magic is broken, kid! The Blood Valkyrie class is supposed to use the energy of her teammates to make her stronger. But her core is twisted. If she swings that sword, she completely drains the life force of whoever is attached to her! She sucks them dry until they die! She’s killed three of her own teammates before!"Julian’s eyes widened. He understood immediately. Aria had a class that made her a god of war, but it required human batteries. She was a pariah. A cursed outcast. No team would ever take her because fighting beside her meant dying. "And tonight," the Arena Master laughed into the microphone, "she is facing five of our best elite gladiators! If she wants to live, she has to fight! And if she fights, she will drain those five slaves to death! Let’s see what she chooses!"The crowd went completely wild. They loved this sick game. On the opposite side of the arena, five mas

The morning after Julian crashed the live television broadcast, he thought the world would be on his side. He thought the truth would set him free. He was completely wrong. Julian stood in the bright, clean courtyard of the Heavenfall Guardian Academy. This was the place where young fighters went to join official Guilds. Julian stood perfectly straight, wearing a cheap but clean black jacket. In his hand, he held a wooden sign that read: “NEW GUILD RECRUITING. ALL CLASSES WELCOME.”A group of heavily armored students walked past him. They pointed at him and burst out laughing. "Look, it's the crazy guy from the TV!" one of the students, a tall boy with a fire staff, sneered. "Hey, Julian! Are you going to heal us to death?"Julian did not say a word. He just watched them walk away. Overnight, the Golden Sands Guild had used their massive wealth to completely change the story. They told the newspapers that Julian was a traumatized, broken boy who had lost his mind during the boss fi

  • Chapter 6

Julian looked down at himself. He was a mess. His clothes were torn and covered in the dark blood of the Abyssal Drake and the Alpha Wolf. He was barefoot, dirty, and looked like a beggar. But he was alive. He started walking down the crowded sidewalk. People gave him weird looks and stepped out of his way, but no one tried to help him. Suddenly, Julian stopped. He was standing in the Central Plaza, the busiest part of the city. High above the plaza, attached to the side of a massive skyscraper, was a giant Crystal Broadcast Screen. It was the size of a football field, showing live television to the whole city. Julian stared at the screen. His blood ran cold. On the giant screen was Dominic Sullivan. Dominic was sitting on a comfortable white couch in a fancy television studio. He was wearing perfectly clean, expensive clothes. Caleb and Sophia sat quietly beside him. Across from them was a famous news reporter. "...and we are so sorry for your tragic loss, Captain Sullivan," th

  • Chapter 5

Julian was falling too fast. The wind roared in his ears like a furious monster. Above him, the glowing blue spatial rift snapped shut, plunging him into a dark, heavy sky. Below him, the ground was rushing up to meet him. He was thousands of feet in the air. If he hit the ground at this speed, he would be crushed into powder. "Think!" Julian shouted to himself, forcing his eyes open against the freezing wind. He reached inside his chest, searching for his new magic. His shattered Mana Core responded instantly. The black and gold energy flooded his veins. He remembered how he had transferred the heavy weight of the Drake’s tail strike into the Alpha Wolf. Weight was just a rule. Gravity was just a rule. And as a Sovereign, he could change the rules. Julian pointed his hands straight down at the rapidly approaching ground. "Command!" Julian yelled, using all his focus. "Gravity Inversion!"A massive circle of golden light appeared in the air directly below him. As Julian crashed
