Alex instinctively raised his hand, intending to hit Brian. His face flushed red, his jaw clenched, holding back his emotions. He was furious at what Brian had said to Lily.
But that thought was cut short when their lecturer appeared at the front of the class. Like it or not, they all had to go in. Alex could only give him an angry glare before turning to leave.
Brian simply flashed a triumphant smile at Alex and Lily. However, pain welled up in his chest. After all, the woman he had been with for two years must still have left him with feelings of love and heartache.
"Brian, you're so brave," Jackson whispered as they sat down in their seats.
"Did I say something wrong?" Brian asked quietly, his eyes still fixed on the front.
"Not really," Jackson answered honestly. "They do need to be taught a lesson. If they really loved each other, why didn't they start earlier? You've been dating Lily for almost two years, and then you get betrayed like this."
Brian sighed softly. “Never mind. Just pretend we never had any relationship. Maybe even pretend we don't know each other.”
“But it still feels like something lingers, doesn't it?” Jackson grinned, deliberately teasing.
Brian glanced at him briefly, then smiled faintly. “Yeah. Alex just scavenged what was left of me.”
Jackson laughed, almost too loudly. Brian laughed briefly too. Both of them quickly covered their mouths with their hands when the professor glanced sharply at them. From then on, they pretended to be focused, even though Brian's mind was completely off the classroom.
The two-hour class finally ended. Brian hurried out because he planned to arrive early for work today. But just as he was about to get on his motorcycle, a hand grabbed his arm quite forcefully.
Alex.
“What's wrong, Lex?” Brian asked calmly.
“Don't ever go near Lily again!” Alex said threateningly.
Brian nodded casually. “Don't worry. I never take back the trash I throw away. So don't be afraid. I leave Lily completely in your care.”
He didn't understand why Alex would think that. In fact, since catching them that night, Brian had no intention of returning to Lily.
Alex clenched his fists. "Don't provoke me, Brian."
"I'm not trying to provoke. I'm just being honest," Brian replied. "Sorry, I have to go. I have to work."
"You're poor, don't act like it," Alex snorted, spitting out in disgust at Brian.
Brian smiled slightly. "I know. That's why I have to work, because I'm poor."
Without waiting for a reply, Brian started his motorcycle and left campus. The afternoon breeze hit his face. Riding a new motorcycle felt different. There was a lightness, a hint of confidence that had grown without him realizing it. A few girls on the side of the road glanced at him, making the corners of his lips lift slightly.
At the café, Brian worked as usual. Singing, greeting customers, and then tidying up his equipment when he was done. The system on his phone seemed so calm. No notifications, no new tasks. He tried accessing it several times, but it displayed like a normal app, as if nothing had happened.
"What's your secret, really?" Brian muttered as he stared at his phone screen after his work was done that night. He was ready to go home, but he lit a cigarette first.
"Brian, come to my office before you go."
The café boss's voice called out to him. Brian turned and nodded without suspicion. Although it felt a little odd, he had never been called directly by a café owner before.
"Yes, sir."
Brian put out his cigarette, threw the butt into the ashtray, and followed the man. They entered a small room at the back of the café. Brian sat across from his boss, feeling puzzled.
"What's wrong, sir?" Brian asked.
"How long have you worked here?" the man asked.
"Two years, sir," Brian answered honestly.
The man, in his early forties, named Rio, nodded slowly. He opened a desk drawer, took something out, and then closed it. His face looked like he was weighing a decision.
"Brian," Rio said finally, "starting tomorrow you won't have to come to this café anymore. Thank you for your good work for two years."
Brian stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean, sir?”
“We feel the genre of the song you’re performing is too old-fashioned,” Rio replied calmly. “We need something fresher, more in line with market tastes. We’ve found another singer who we think is a better fit.”
“So… I’m fired?” Brian asked quietly.
“Yes, you could say that.”
Brian swallowed. “I can adapt, sir. I can perform any song the café desires.”
Rio shook his head. “Sorry, I can’t.”
“Just tell me the real reason, sir.”
Rio paused for a moment, then sighed. “We can’t go against orders.”
Brian’s eyes widened. “Whose orders?”

“Ting!”An incoming message on Brian's cell phone broke the silence of the night which was increasingly feeling oppressive. He, who had been standing near the car, immediately grabbed his cell phone quickly. However, as soon as the screen opened and the contents of the message were clearly visible, his jaw immediately tightened, while his hands were clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white. How come?An unknown number sent a picture that made his chest feel like it was being squeezed. In the picture, his parents are seen sitting in a closed room. “Bang!”A gunshot shattered the silence, previously filled only with the roar of a vehicle's engine. The flash of fire from the muzzle of a gun could be seen in the distance, coming from Emily's men's car, which had arrived almost at the same time as them.“Good job, they've arrived. So I don't need to draw my weapon,” Emily said calmly, even though the situation ahead was clearly very dangerous.Brian swallowed hard, his eyes focused ahead, while his heart beat faster. He had never been in a situation like this before, where the sound of gunfire was so close to him.The exchange of fire was unavoidable. The car carrying his parents—or at least the one they thought they were—immediately returned fire. The sound of bullets echoed through the air, creating a tense atmosphere that could make anyone lose control.“Watch out! My parents are there!” Brian shouted in panic, his voice tense and filled with fear as he heard the relentless gunfire.Emily remained calm, her eyes sharply observin

"Follow this map, they're heading this way, and we can't be late," Emily said to Brian, placing her phone screen on the dashboard for easy viewing.Brian stared intently at the address Emily had given him. It was already quite a distance from their current location, and that meant they were racing against time if they wanted to catch the car carrying their parents."Where are they taking my mom and dad?" Brian muttered softly, more to himself than to Emily."You don't need to think about where they're taking them. The important thing is that we catch up and stop them," Emily replied firmly, not wanting Brian to get caught up in anxiety that would only slow his reactions.Brian nodded, though his mind was still filled with various negative possibilities he didn't want to imagine."Are you going down yourself later?" Brian asked then, his eyes remaining focused on the road ahead."No. Two of my men have already arrived at the location. They'll move quickly to help us stop the car," Emil

Brian arrived at the bus terminal. However, the place was incredibly crowded, with vehicles constantly coming and going, horns honking, and people milling about without really paying attention to one another. In such a bustle, it was easy for someone to disappear without a trace, and that was what made Brian's chest tighten.Wasting no time, Brian immediately looked for his regular travel agent from his village, hoping someone had seen his parents. He jogged along, his eyes scanning every corner of the terminal anxiously."Did you see my father and mother earlier?" Brian asked one of the drivers he knew from the village, his voice hurried and hopeful."Oh, someone picked them up earlier. They said it was you," the driver replied casually, not realizing how important this information was to Brian.Brian immediately fell silent, his face tense. "Where are they going?" Brian asked again, this time in a more urgent tone. The driver shook his head slowly. "I don't know. They left immediate

"Are they really coming today?" Emily asked Brian, her voice casual, but her eyes betrayed a serious concern for what was happening."Yes, because they still had work in the village yesterday, so they couldn't come yesterday. They left the village this morning using a travel agent," Brian replied, although he wasn't entirely calm when he said it."So, who's picking them up?" Emily asked again, this time in a slightly sharper tone, as if she were beginning to notice something odd about the situation."I should have picked them up a little while ago, because they hadn't arrived according to the estimated departure time. But somehow, they've already arrived," Brian replied, his face beginning to show a unease he could no longer hide."I'll go after them immediately," Emily said without hesitation, as if it were the only sensible decision at the moment.Brian immediately nodded, not wanting to waste another second. Ignoring the atmosphere of what was supposed to be his most joyous graduat

"Yes, I'll be your asset."Brian smiled at Emily, but behind that smile lurked a realization far deeper than a mere joke.He knew full well that the course of action he was taking now was no ordinary game, but a path fraught with risk, especially now that he was face-to-face with someone like Diego.Without Emily's protection and strength, he wasn't sure he could last long in this dangerous game.Emily glanced at him briefly, as if reading the meaning behind those simple words. "Don't just be an asset," she said calmly, "become someone truly useful."Brian nodded slowly. He understood her meaning. This wasn't about dependence, but about surviving and thriving under pressure. He also realized that Diego was no opponent to be underestimated.
