Gin
“I won’t lose, I mustn’t lose” while I fought Orion, this was the only thought running through my mind, keeping me on my feet.
I struggled with my trembling legs and my vision which was fastly fading. My ears rang as I took hit after hit from Orion, trying my best to stand my ground. My honour was on the line.
Orion was never this strong. There’s was no way he was beating me in a fist fight. Not unless the magic enhanced his physical abilities as well.
I tried to evade him but it was to no avail. He was too fast on his feet, and with his hands as well.
Before long, I noticed the crowd thinning out, followed by the sound of our home room, instructor’s voice.
“Getting involved in trouble again? As expected of you, Sofiaso. Don’t you get tired of causing trouble for yourself, and the rest of the class?” He mentioned my name almost immediately, acting like Orion wasn’t standing at that very spot as well. Mr. Nathaniel had history with my elder brother, and it wasn’t the good kind of history. He had disliked us ever since.
His presence at the arena either meant to that one of the students secretly notified him, or the teachers staff meeting had been concluded.
“With all due respect sir, I would appreciate if you didn’t interfere in this” Orion said softly.
The students had gone totally silent, sneaking out of the arena one after the other.
“Oh? I’m not here to interfere in anything. Nothing of the sort. Rather, I am here to watch how this turns out” Mr. Nathaniel said with a knowing smile on his face.
I didn’t have anything to say, I was focused sharply on Orion. Letting him out of my sight would cost me.
“Sir, I think you should stop this before someone gets seriously hurt” a voice said from the crowd of students, a voice I recognized instantly.
“That damned Isaak” I muttered, gritting my teeth.
“Mr. Crowley, could you tell me, which one of us is the teacher here?” Nathaniel asked.
I no longer heard Isaak’s voice.
Orion and I stood in the real middle of the arena. The part where warriors used for combat. Nathaniel, with his authorization as a teacher has moved the students into the actual seats.
“Alright boys, you’re starting now for real. Feel free to go all out” Nathaniel said to us. I knew that he was really just talking to Orion but that didn’t matter.
Again, we took our stances, my body cried out in pain but I toughened up.
At the sight of the spark of flames going off from Nathaniel’s fingers, we started.
Orion was moving too fast, he had closed the distance between us before I could even knew what was happening.
I took a leap back, evading him. I was on the defensive, and I hated it.
All the way through, Orion laughed maniacally.
He sped towards me again, but I used his monumentum against him, pulling him and tossing him as such that he smashed against the arena wall.
The students went quiet with surprise first, then a loud roar of cheering echoed.
As the dust cleared, I could see Orion laughing, he spat blood.
“flame art: barrage of a thousand dragons!” He yelled.
In the blink of an eye, I saw flames in the shape of dragons approaching me. The bastard was trying to scorch me.
I tried to evade the flames but I wasn’t fast enough. The raging flames burnt through my jacket and ate through my skin as it flung me into the same fence I flung Orion into.
I cried out in agony, it was hot, really hot, he was trying to kill me.
“When did he even make the incantation? I only heard the end of the chant. Or, did he deliberately make me throw him into the wall?” I thought. My consciousness was fast fading.
The students had gone completely silent again. With my fastly fading eyesight, I looked up and could see the horror on their faces. Of course they’d be terrified, flames ate through my flesh.
I still didn’t fall to the ground, I used the wall for support.
Orion was charging towards me again, he was speaking an incantation but I couldn’t hear, my ears might have been damaged.
I mustered strength, charging towards him slowly as well so I could break his momentum. His wand was pointed towards me, whips of flames landed across my skin, ripping it off as they went. Then he gave me a sharp punch to the nose and finally drove me to the ground.
I felt barely alive. It hurt so much. Orion approached me with a wicked grin.
My hearing had started to return slowly, I could hear his feet scrubbing across the dirt.
I stared death in the face, he was about to use another flame spell.
I could see a flame barrage in the air, they were the size of little rocks.
Although my face was partial burnt, I smiled.
“L-ooks like I- los” my speech was interrupted by a rumbling. Before I knew it, I was covered in a cage of earth magic.
“That’s quite enough” a voice said. It was hard to hear from within the rocks.
“get out of my way before I scorch you. Mr. Nathaniel hasn’t ended the fight” another voice said. I could recognize that it was Orion’s voice.
“Nathaniel is a fool, that’s what he is. After now I’ll make sure he answers to the principal, I’ll surely report him” No doubt, the voice belonged to Isaak.
I heard footsteps.
“Did you just call your teacher a fool?” Nathaniel's voice echoed in a distance.
“End this fight, now!” Isaak thundered.
“Crowley, you have one last chance to get out of my way” Orion said.
“Both fighters are still in action” Nathaniel replied.
“If so, I concede on behalf of Gin!” Those were the last words I heard before my consciousness faded completely.

Faceoff
Gin“Another competitor has crossed the gate” the device notified. How many was it at that point? Since the first announcement of a competitor crossing the gate, I had received a bunch of similar notifications from the hovering device. “I have to find that gate soon. According to the information we received, it should be changing locations anytime soon” I muttered.“We’re close Ginny, but the energy in that area is starting to fluctuate” Rhyssa informed.“it’s just like I suspected. The gate will move soon. I would be faster if I wasn’t trying to creep around the shadows but the moment I attempt to move in the open, I’ll get ambushed.” I pondered, stroking my chin.“how about just heading to the next location before it even appears there?” Rhyssa suggested.“and how do you suppose I find out where the next gate will appear?” I asked impatiently.“while the mana dissipates at the region where the gate is located, I feel it building in another direction. Just east of here” she explaine
Rhyssa the sprite/the ambush
GinThere were two assailants as far as my eyes could see. If it were just these guys, then there was nothing to worry about. Neither of them used magic when I fought them in school due to the academy’s policies. Students weren’t allowed to use magic on other students on school premises, except it was an official duel. I always had the edge over my opponents when I encountered them on school grounds, asides Isaak and Carolynn, I didn’t know of many other students that could match my raw physical strength. I was at a disadvantage, out here, physical strength amounted to very little, we were allowed to use magic. The entire point of the event was to show off our magic abilities.“how do you intend to get out of this, Ginny. They look serious” my partner asked, she was on edge. Sprites hated violence, it was against their nature.“You can go to sleep, Rhyssa. I’ll summon you again when I’m done taking care of this” I instructed, watching my opponents closely to make sure they didn’t make
Game plan
GinThe stage started out fierce, with competitors already laying traps and sabotaging each other. I predicated that it would be like this, so I made plans in preparation. More like Zain predicated how it would be and gave me an idea on how to reach the goal in time, but I hated giving her dumbass credit for anything, so I passed it off in my head as my own idea.During the early minutes of the first stage, certain students were more focused on sabotaging other students, acting on grudges rather than focusing on finding the gate. If I could lay off fighting and just focus on finding the gate, I had more chance of finding it.Zain said it, and it was playing out exactly as she predicated. It was to be expected, she won the royal games during her last year at the academy.I wasn’t familiar with some districts in the capital because asides the Crowleys’ mansion, I hardly left the Sofiaso fortress.“where to look, where to look. Where do I look first?” I pondered, tapping my forehead ligh
Let the games begin
NarratorOver three hundred students were gathered in the biggest arena at the academy. For the royal games, they all wore robes with their family’s crest on it, in order to represent their houses. As for the few students who didn’t belong to noble houses, they wore robes with the academy’s crest on it.The seats were filled, people waiting to watch the spectacle cheered on the students.Gin stood by the corner, away from the other students socializing, he saw no point in pretending to be friendly just minutes to the tournament starting.A light jab to his shoulder brought his attention back to the arena. Isaak stared him down with eyebrows arched in anger and disappointment.“What kind of friend just goes silent with no form of communication whatsoever?” he asked.“the me kind” Gin replied abruptly.Isaak sighed in exhaustion. “sometimes, I don’t even know what to do with you” he said.“Your antisocial nature will be the death of you.” he added. The absentee friend clicked his tongue
frenemies
GinA few days to the preliminaries. It was rowdy on campus. Everybody was busy with one thing or the other. Training, trying to unlock their secret attributes, building temporary alliances, and then there was me. I was clueless on what to do. In the evenings, Zain spared with me in both sword art and hand to hand combat, during the day, I spent all my time at the workshop, cleaning and organizing the equipment for my bratty seniors. Two days to the preliminaries, I tried harnessing that strange power I used back at that labyrinth, it didn’t work. It hadn’t worked since I got back to the capital. The day before, Marcus gave me a strange weapon in a box. “I’ve got a surprise for you. Even a person with your stats can manage this much.” he said. He told me not to open the box till I was ready to use it, but my curiosity got the better of me, so I opened it.Twin daggers. They were made of the minerals we collected in the cave that day. I recognized the metal. It was the kind that stored
Registration day
GinRegistration day. Against my mother’s wishes, I went to school with a cast around my left arm. It was more busted up than I realized. Even with magic, the bone needed time to set properly. I was too excited to worry about something as minor as a busted arm. I owed Orion a beating, and I planned to pay him back on the grandest stage I knew. “I’ll hand his ass to him in front of all Fritia’s nobility” I decided.Something bothered me as I sat in class. When I visited the royal palace the previous day, I saw the king. The people only spoke good things about the king, always praising his wisdom and kindness in dealing with affairs concerning the kingdom. During the meeting with the council, he left all the talking to the council members. He looked uninterested, like he had some other place to be. When I asked Mom at home, “that’s just the way he is” was her answer. It had me wondering whether the king was a nonchalant selfish prick like Carolynn had implied outside the wall. All of th
