The air inside Classroom 2-C of the Technological Engineering Institute University was stiflingly hot and heavy with the combined scent of terrified sweat and stale breath.

Lucia Gonzales sat quietly on the edge of the teacher’s desk while staring intently at the massive mountain of metal chairs and heavy wooden tables that the students had frantically shoved against the classroom door several hours ago. The afternoon sun was violently beating against the second-floor windows, completely baking the enclosed room because the central air conditioning system had mysteriously shut down shortly after the screaming outside had finally stopped. There were exactly eleven students trapped inside the small academic space, and the overwhelming silence shared between them was only occasionally broken by the terrifying sounds of wet tearing and guttural moaning echoing from the bloodstained courtyard far below.

She took a deep and highly controlled breath before looking away from the barricaded door to address her ten classmates huddled together on the linoleum floor.

"We absolutely need to ration what little we have left," Lucia instructed them in a voice that she desperately hoped sounded much steadier than she actually felt. She distinctly remembered the cold and focused tone her older brother had used on the phone earlier that morning, and she was actively trying to perfectly mimic that exact same reassuring strength. "My brother told me that we need to take very small sips of water instead of drinking it all at once, and we need to officially gather all of the remaining food into one central pile so that everyone gets an equal share until we are rescued."

A boy named Kevin clutched his brightly colored backpack tighter to his chest and looked at her with defensive and wide eyes. He was the owner of the single package of peanut butter crackers that constituted the vast majority of their remaining caloric supplies, and he clearly had absolutely no intention of surrendering his prize to the collective group.

"I am not giving up my food just because your brother gave you some stupid advice over the phone," Kevin muttered stubbornly. "We have absolutely no idea how long we are going to be trapped inside this room."

"That is exactly why we need to share it," Lucia countered patiently while maintaining direct eye contact with the frightened boy. "Riccardo explicitly promised me that he is coming here to get us out, and he told me that he currently has serious resources and highly trained people working with him. We just need to stay completely calm, keep the heavy door securely blocked, and ensure that everyone has enough energy to run when he finally arrives."

A harsh and incredibly cruel laugh suddenly echoed from the far corner of the dark classroom.

The mocking sound belonged to Nicola, who was a tall and athletic student who had previously enjoyed a massive amount of social popularity before the apocalyptic morning had violently stripped away the normal hierarchy of their high school lives. He slowly pushed himself off the wall and confidently walked into the center of the room with his hands casually stuffed inside the pockets of his expensive uniform trousers. He looked entirely too relaxed for a teenager currently trapped inside a building completely surrounded by flesh-eating monsters.

"You are completely delusional if you actually believe any of that garbage, Lucia," Nicola stated with a sneer of pure condescension painting his handsome features. "Your brother is just a simple political science student who lives all the way over in Makati, which is practically on the entirely opposite side of the metropolitan grid." He dramatically swept his arm toward the large windows displaying the burning ruins of Quezon City. "I want you to look outside and tell me exactly what you see, because I currently see absolutely zero police cars, zero military helicopters, and zero rescue convoys actively trying to save us."

"Rico promised me that he is coming," she repeated stubbornly while her hands formed tight fists in her lap.

"People lie when they are terrified and desperately want to feel better about dying," Nicola dismissed her faith entirely. "The entire national military has clearly completely failed to contain this nightmare, the local police force has entirely abandoned the streets, and the central government is absolutely nowhere to be found. If the actual armed forces of the Philippines cannot even manage to secure a single city block right now, then your twenty-year-old brother is absolutely not going to magically fight his way through millions of infected zombies just to save a bunch of high school students."

Several of the other students nervously shifted on the hard floor while exchanging highly terrified glances with one another. Nicola’s brutal pragmatism was actively confirming their absolute darkest fears, and Lucia could physically see the fragile hope she had carefully built over the past few hours rapidly bleeding out of the stifling room.

"He is definitely coming for me," Lucia insisted while raising her chin defiantly. "You do not know him the way I do, and you have absolutely no idea what he is truly capable of doing when our family is threatened."

Nicola simply rolled his dark eyes and was actively opening his mouth to deliver another cruel remark when a sudden burst of static sharply cut through the tense atmosphere of the classroom.

A quiet girl named Maya was sitting near the teacher's podium with her cellular phone resting flat on the ground. She had been desperately attempting to secure a reliable data signal for the past three hours, and her screen had miraculously just flickered to life. The glowing display was currently buffering a live television broadcast that was being aggressively pushed to every single functional mobile device remaining across the entire country.

"I have a live video feed," Maya whispered in total shock. "The national emergency broadcast system is actively transmitting a live address right now."

Every single student in the classroom immediately scrambled across the floor to eagerly crowd around the small glowing screen. Even the arrogant Nicola briefly dropped his cynical posture and pushed his way forcefully to the front of the desperate group to watch the unfolding broadcast. Lucia slid off the desk and joined them while silently praying that the incoming message would finally bring some much-needed order to the horrific chaos surrounding them.

The buffered video feed finally stabilized to reveal the highly recognizable face of the President of the Philippines.

He was currently seated behind a massive wooden desk inside what appeared to be a heavily fortified underground bunker. The concrete walls behind him were entirely bare except for the official presidential seal, and there were exactly four heavily armed members of the Presidential Security Group standing at perfect attention directly behind his leather chair. The president looked incredibly exhausted with deep purple bags resting heavily beneath his bloodshot eyes, but he was actively attempting to project an aura of absolute authority and calm resolve to the terrified nation.

"My fellow citizens," the president began in a grave and trembling voice that severely betrayed his confident posture. "Our great nation is currently facing an unprecedented biological catastrophe of unknown origins. I am speaking to you now to officially declare a state of absolute martial law across the entire country, and I want to personally assure every single one of you that your central government remains entirely functional and fully committed to your ultimate survival."

A collective sigh of profound relief physically washed over the trapped students in the classroom as they listened to the comforting sound of official authority.

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines have been completely mobilized to establish heavily fortified safe zones across all major metropolitan areas," the president continued while staring directly into the camera lens. "We are currently executing coordinated military sweeps to systematically eliminate the infected threats, and we ask that all surviving citizens remain securely sheltered in place until proper rescue personnel can safely arrive at your designated locations. You must not lose hope because we are absolutely going to defeat this terrible enemy together."

The trapped students actually started to smile at one another while wiping tears of relief from their dirty faces. The powerful broadcast was providing the exact glimmer of desperate hope they had all been praying for since the violent screaming had first started that morning. Even Kevin finally relaxed his desperate grip on his backpack and looked over at Lucia with a highly apologetic expression.

However, the fragile illusion of guaranteed safety was violently shattered merely a few seconds later.

A deafening and highly unnatural screech suddenly echoed from somewhere completely off-camera inside the secure presidential bunker. The horrifying sound was incredibly high-pitched and carried a sickening metallic vibration that caused the audio feed on the mobile phone to violently distort into sharp static.

The president instantly stopped speaking and looked up toward the ceiling with an expression of absolute, paralyzing terror completely overtaking his previously calm features. The four elite security guards standing behind him instantly raised their heavy assault rifles and aggressively pointed them directly at the fortified steel doors located entirely out of the camera's fixed frame.

"What is happening?" Maya whispered in horror while staring blindly at her phone screen.

The massive steel doors of the underground bunker were suddenly violently torn entirely off their heavy hinges with a sickening screech of tortured metal. The thick steel plates flew across the room and violently crushed two of the armed security guards against the concrete wall before they could even squeeze their respective triggers. The remaining two guards immediately opened fire with deafening bursts of automatic gunfire, but their desperate bullets appeared to have absolutely zero effect on whatever terrifying nightmare had just breached the secure room.

A massive creature aggressively stepped into the visible frame of the camera, and Lucia felt the blood turn entirely to solid ice within her veins.

The monster stood easily three meters tall and possessed a heavily muscled and highly mutated physical structure that was horrifyingly wrong in every single conceivable proportion. Its elongated arms dragged heavily against the bunker floor, and its massive chest was covered in thick, bone-like armor plating that was actively deflecting the desperate military gunfire with sparking ricochets. The hulking brute lunged forward with terrifying and impossible speed, effortlessly grabbing one of the screaming guards in a single massive hand before violently throwing the man completely across the room with the casual ease of a child discarding a broken toy.

The president scrambled desperately backward out of his leather chair while screaming for help, but his pleas were instantly cut short as a second creature suddenly dropped directly out of the bunker ceiling.

This new nightmare possessed a leathery and dark wingspan that stretched massively across the entire room, and its twisted torso resembled a horrifying hybrid between a human man and a monstrous bat. It landed directly on top of the massive wooden desk and aggressively plucked the screaming president right off the floor using heavily taloned feet.

The final surviving security guard desperately tried to turn his weapon on the winged beast, but the massive brute creature instantly closed the remaining distance and violently brought its heavily armored fists directly down onto the man.

The live camera feed was immediately splattered with thick, dark blood, obscuring the absolute worst of the ensuing slaughter behind a sickening red filter. The horrific sounds of wet tearing, brutal crushing, and dying screams continued echoing directly through the small mobile phone speaker for exactly ten more agonizing seconds before the broadcast finally abruptly terminated into a completely silent screen of dead static.

Nobody inside Classroom 2-C dared to even breathe.

The profound silence following the broadcast was entirely absolute and utterly deafening. The students simply sat frozen on the hard floor while staring blindly at the dead digital screen with entirely hollow eyes. The president of their country and his absolute best military security detail had just been effortlessly butchered on live television by creatures that defied all known scientific logic.

The comforting illusion of governmental authority, military rescue, and guaranteed safety had completely died right alongside the screaming president. There were absolutely no safe zones waiting for them, there were no rescue convoys coming to save them, and there was absolutely no higher authority left in the world to enforce the established laws of human society.

Lucia felt a fresh wave of paralyzing terror wash over her entirely as the horrific reality of their situation fully settled into her mind. The entire world outside their barricaded door had effectively ended, and they were completely and utterly alone in the dark ruins.

She slowly looked up from the dead phone screen and immediately noticed that Nicola was reacting vastly differently than the rest of the terrified students.

While the other teenagers were quietly sobbing into their hands or rocking back and forth in total shock, Nicola was simply standing perfectly still with a highly calculating and completely chilling expression resting securely on his handsome face. He was absolutely not crying, and he did not look remotely terrified by the horrific slaughter they had all just witnessed on the live broadcast. Instead, he looked exactly like someone who had just solved a highly complex mathematical equation and was deeply satisfied with the resulting answer.

Nicola slowly swept his dark gaze completely across the dark classroom while carefully evaluating the weeping students cowering on the floor. His eyes lingered uncomfortably long on the female students before shifting over to heavily regard the small pile of hoarded supplies that Kevin was still desperately trying to protect.

The collapse of human society had entirely broken the other teenagers, but it had entirely liberated Nicola.

"Well," Nicola finally broke the oppressive silence with a voice that was sickeningly calm and perfectly smooth. "I suppose that definitely settles the ongoing debate about whether or not the authorities are coming to save us."

"Nicola, please do not say anything else right now," Maya begged him through her quiet sobs. "We just watched the president die."

"The president was an incredibly weak old man who foolishly believed that his hollow titles and fancy military guards actually mattered against physical superior strength," Nicola replied coldly while taking a slow and highly deliberate step toward the center of the vulnerable group. "The old rules of our society are entirely dead and gone, Maya. There are absolutely no police officers coming to arrest anyone, there are no teachers coming to issue detentions, and there are absolutely no parents coming to ground us for bad behavior."

Lucia immediately recognized the highly dangerous shift in his entire demeanor. The specific brand of arrogance he had displayed earlier was standard high school bullying, but this new calculating coldness was something entirely different and vastly more predatory. He was actively testing the newly established boundaries of a world entirely without consequences.

"We still need to work together if we want to survive this," Lucia stated firmly while intentionally stepping directly between Nicola and the crying students behind her. "Nothing has fundamentally changed about our current situation inside this specific room."

"Everything has fundamentally changed, Lucia," Nicola corrected her while smiling with a chilling lack of genuine warmth. He slowly closed the remaining distance between them until he was standing entirely too close to her personal space, actively using his superior physical height and athletic build to silently intimidate her. "The strong creatures outside are currently doing absolutely whatever they want to the weak people, and nobody is stopping them because nobody can actually stop them. That is the only real law that actively exists in the entire world right now."

He slowly reached his hand out and aggressively snatched the small bag of potato chips directly out of Kevin's trembling hands. Kevin immediately flinched backward and completely refused to fight for the stolen food, totally surrendering to the immediate threat of physical violence. Nicola casually ripped the plastic bag open and began eating the contents while maintaining incredibly intense and unblinking eye contact directly with Lucia.

"I am officially taking these chips because I am hungry and because I am physically strong enough to take them from him," Nicola declared loudly so that every single student in the room could clearly hear his new doctrine. "If anyone here has a problem with that established fact, then you are entirely welcome to try and stop me."

Nobody moved to stop him. The terrified students simply huddled closer together on the floor and actively avoided looking directly at the dangerous boy who had suddenly crowned himself the absolute dictator of their small academic prison.

"That is exactly what I thought," Nicola chuckled darkly before turning his full attention entirely back to Lucia. His dark eyes slowly dragged completely up and down her physical frame in a highly suggestive and entirely inappropriate manner that instantly made her skin crawl with total revulsion. "You know, Lucia, since your pathetic brother is definitely never coming to save you, you are going to need a strong protector in this new world if you actually want to survive." He stepped even closer and lowered his voice into a menacing whisper that only she could clearly hear. "I am absolutely willing to be that strong protector for you, but you are going to have to prove that you are genuinely grateful for my dedicated services."

Lucia felt a hot flash of pure anger violently burn completely straight through her paralyzing terror. She firmly held her ground without stepping backward and glared directly up into his predatory eyes with absolute defiance.

"If you ever touch me, my brother will absolutely kill you," she promised him in a voice that was completely devoid of any trembling doubt.

Nicola simply laughed right in her face. It was a cold and highly dismissive sound that clearly communicated his total lack of fear regarding any external threats. "Your brother is already dead out there in the streets, little girl, and you currently belong entirely to me now."

He abruptly turned his back on her and casually walked over to claim the most comfortable chair in the entire classroom, aggressively kicking another terrified student completely out of his chosen path simply because he could freely do so without facing any consequences.

Lucia stood perfectly still in the center of the dark classroom while a completely chilling tension heavily settled directly over the trapped survivors. The physical danger represented by the bloodthirsty monsters violently destroying the burning city outside their windows was absolutely terrifying, but the profound moral danger currently lurking inside the barricaded room with them was rapidly proving to be infinitely worse. The fragile fabric of their basic human decency had completely unraveled the exact moment the government had violently collapsed on live television, leaving them entirely trapped in a desperate struggle between maintaining their morality and surrendering to absolute corruption.

She silently reached her trembling hand down into her uniform pocket and tightly gripped her mobile phone. She desperately prayed that Riccardo was moving fast, because she finally realized with absolute and horrific certainty that the terrifying monsters waiting outside the door were no longer the absolute greatest threat to her survival.
