Despite the initial ego clashes and bitter exchanges, the picnic ended on a happy note.

Jennifer Warrington kept Blake under control and tried her best to present herself as the most amicable host. And when they were ready to leave, she even handed Dr. Lucy a basket filled with homemade cookies and freshly baked bread.

“It was lovely to be in your company. I hope we can now finally put our differences aside,” she added, smiling disarmingly at Alex.

“I don’t have any quarrels with you,” Alex replied curtly. “But next time, I want to invite you all over to my new mansion,” he added, looking around.

“We will be glad to experience your hospitality, Dr. Verlaine,” Jennifer replied in her honeyed voice.

“I am always down for a good meal,” Edgar Warrington chuckled from afar. “These things bring the family closer. After all, there is nothing stronger than blood.”

Jennifer’s carefully planned move had turned the tables in an instant and sown doubts into the minds of the Warringtons.“There is nothing going on between me and Elizabeth!” Alex protested, vehemently denying the false allegations.“Then why did you call her into your room that night?” Jennifer Warrington probed. “What was so secretive that you couldn’t discuss it in front of her own family?”Alex knew he couldn’t spill Elizabeth’s medical condition out in the open and simmered down. But Elizabeth wasn’t ready to keep quiet while her aunt continued hammering her reputation.“Dr. Verlaine didn’t call me into his room that night. I went there myself to…to thank him for helping grandpa. Nothing happened between us.”“That’s enough!” Josiah Warrington thundered.“But dad, I really—”“Quiet, I said!” Josiah shouted her down before marching up to Alex. “I trusted you…held you in high regard. The scathing accusation shocked everyone in the room, causing tensions to flare up through the roof. Alex had shaken the very foundations of the Warrington family by pointing a finger at Jennifer Warrington. As all eyes turned toward Jennifer, she feigned ignorance.“How could you even say that?” Jennifer Warrington gasped, her voice shaky and small as she reeled in shock. Pointing her gloved hand at herself, she cried, “Do you think I would try to hurt my dear Lizzie? I am her aunt, for God’s sake. I’ve known her since she was a wee little child sucking her thumb!”But despite her theatrics, Alex remained unmoved.“Relations mean nothing to you, Ms. Jennifer,” he muttered, staring fixedly at her. “You never liked Elizabeth. I think everyone already knows that.”Jennifer Warrington chuckled at his words; her smile twisted in utter disbelief. “Are you even listening to yourself? Elizabeth is family. We share the same blood!”“Is that the reason you wanted to humiliate her at the dinner

But there wasn’t even a bird fluttering amidst the dark clouds.“I am not dying here. I need to save Elizabeth!”Thinking about the bedridden girl fighting for her life, Alex steeled his resolve and looked for another way out of this mess.He suddenly remembered the private militia had set up a military base near the beach, and since they had already spotted an unidentified flier, there were bound to be patrols searching for the intruder. If Alex could get hold of one of their mountain bikes or jeeps, he could get to safety before the lava turned him to ash.To attract the enemy’s attention, Alex fired a green flare into the sky.
