Amanda opened her eyes, every part of her body trembling. Was she... dead? She wasn't. She watched the truck speed off into the distance.

She glanced at Cole. He wasn't injured—he was destroyed. His clothes were soaked in blood.

Everything blurred together: the wailing sirens, climbing into the ambulance with Cole, grabbing his hand and begging him to hang on before they reached the hospital.

Thirty minutes later, Amanda paced the reception area. It felt like hours since they'd rushed Cole into surgery, but none of the doctors or nurses had come out.

Just as she was about to storm through the doors again, the OR opened.

A doctor emerged. Amanda started toward him, then stopped. He had that grim look doctors got before they said, "We lost him"—the kind they tried to cover with a sympathetic smile.

"I don't want to hear it," Amanda burst out. "I just saw him for the first time in three years..." She couldn't finish.

A nurse wheeled someone out. Cole.

Amanda stared back and forth between the doctor and Cole.

"Well, ma'am, I was going to tell you that your husband is a miracle, but you didn't give me the chance," the doctor said with a polite smile.

Amanda let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding.

"If you don't mind, we could tend to your injuries now that you've seen your husband is okay," one of the nurses said, having been trying to get Amanda's attention.

Cole stood up from the wheelchair as the other medical staff left. Amanda was really a woman worth going through hell for. Any other woman would have believed he was guilty from the start.

He walked closer to hug her, but Amanda moved away swiftly.

"The fact that I was worried about you getting hurt doesn't mean I believe what you told me back there," Amanda said. "Anyone would be worried about someone who saved their life."

Cole slowly dropped his arms. "Right... thanks. What do you want me to do?"

Amanda frowned.

"What should I do to prove my innocence to you?"

"I don't know. I wasn't there when it happened, but I'll give you five days," she said. "After five days, if you can't prove your innocence, I'm divorcing you for real."

Cole nodded. Five days was more than enough to get that bastard for screwing him over.

"Ma'am?" The nurse called to Amanda again.

"And," Amanda said as she turned to leave, "don't misunderstand anything. I wasn't that worried about you. I just don't feel any pain right now, and I was thinking of having my personal doctor look at these injuries, so... that's it.”

Cole managed to hide the smile tugging at his lips. Everything might have changed, but nothing compared to knowing his wife was still the same woman he'd risked three years of his life for.

He walked in the opposite direction to get the rest of his treatment.

Inside Amanda's ward, her phone rang.

"Damn," she muttered under her breath before answering.

"You stupid girl!" Her mother's voice blared so loudly that even the nurse gave Amanda a concerned look.

"Just a second," Amanda muttered to the nurse, seeking privacy.

"How far do you want to go to ruin your life? You went to pick that rapist up from prison?!" her mother shouted.

"Mom... he's not a rapist. He's my husband. He just told me what happened. It turns out Blake—you know Blake, don't you, Mom? From the Harrison family—he was the one who did it. Cole only took the fall to protect—"

"You foolish girl," her father's voice cut in. "I don't want to see you anywhere near that worthless idiot."

"He's lying to you now too?" her mother asked. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm still at the hospital."

“Hospital?” her mother repeated, alarm sharpening her voice.

“Yes. We got into an accident somehow.”

“My God—accident? See?! This is exactly what we’ve been warning you about! That man is nothing but bad luck. Are you badly hurt?”

“No,” Amanda replied quietly.

“Thank goodness. Then come home. Now. Grandma’s calling for a family meeting tonight. And listen—divorce that rapist immediately. Maybe, just maybe, Grandma will change her mind.”

"Alright. I'll be bringing Cole—"

"Has the accident affected your hearing? I said don't bring that piece of trash here!" her mother shouted again.

"Dad—" she started, asking for her father's help.

Her father’s voice replaced her mother’s, even colder. “I won’t have this conversation again. Divorce him as fast as possible. I don’t want to see him near you. Ever.”

Amanda sighed. "Okay, Dad." She hung up.

Minutes later, she found Cole waiting for her in the lobby.

"Let's go," she said, already walking toward the door.

"I need to go see—"

"For now, don't see anyone. Let's get you some decent clothes."

"For what?"

"We're meeting Grandma and the rest of my family tonight.”

Cole stood frozen, dazed. Boss? He wasn’t anybody’s boss—at least, not that he knew of. He eyed the scar-faced man warily. Was this fear talking… or was the universe playing a twisted joke?“What the hell are you doing?!” Blake barked. “Kill him already!”The bald man rose to his feet. For a moment, the entire room held its breath. This was it. Cole’s final chapter.Only… it wasn’t.The bald man turned—not to Cole—but to Blake, who was now struggling to prop himself up on the floor.“Who the hell do you think you are talking to me like that?!” the bald man said casually.Blake groaned. “If you’re going to take revenge, just do it. I can’t bear to—”WHAP!The slap landed clean across Blake’s head, knocking him out cold once more. The bald man dusted his hands, turned, and returned to Cole’s side with a respectful nod.“I apologize for that, sir.”Cole gave the bald man a short nod, expecting an explanation for his earlier outburst. The man straightened, glancing around. The room had

Blake, seeing there was no one left to come to his rescue if that Cole bastard made another move, scrambled to his feet like a man waking from a nightmare.“You might be enjoying this now,” he spat, trying to summon some spine, “but don’t you ever forget—I’m the heir to the Blackridge Consortium Group! The only heir!”His voice cracked, but he raised it louder, hoping it would drown out the panic clawing at his throat.“I’ll come back for you, Cole! You’ll regret every second of this!” he added, staggering toward the door, already halfway gone. But Cole wasn’t done.He started walking toward Blake, not hurried. Blake halted, twisting back. “What now? You think an apology will fix this?” he hissed. “My father is the fucking president of the Blackridge Consortium Group. By the time he hears about this—you’re dead!”Cole didn’t give a damn about some president. Not when this coward had failed Amanda—and still had the audacity to run his mouth like this?Rage blanketed Cole's senses.Wit

What?! Blake came to apologize? Everyone looked one another in the face. Who was Cole to have suddenly become someone that Blake would come apologize to? What the hell…Blake busted into laughter all of a sudden. As if amused by his own joke, Blake burst into laughter. When he stopped, the silence was louder than ever. Confusion clouded every face in the room.“That bastard just ruined my company,” Blake said, his smile gone now.“What?!” Tyler shot up from the side, face red.“You’d all better find him—fast,” Blake said. “He walked into my building and injured ten of my top men. Ten. And I’m not talking bruises here. Doctors aren’t sure a few of them will even recover. And for what? An apology?”It clicked. One by one, expressions changed. Blake hadn’t come to make peace. He was here for blood.“Where’s the turtle?” Blake glanced around like he already knew Cole was too much of a coward to stand his ground. “Don’t tell me he ran off.”“You goddamn bastard! Look at the mess you’ve m

Cole slapped Tyler so hard the sound cracked through the room like a thunderclap, leaving jaws hanging mid-air.“You hired a fucking psychiatrist to write some trashy report about Amanda,” Cole snarled, his voice low, dangerous, “just to keep her out of the running for heir? Seriously?”Tyler's face froze, eyes widening for a brief second. That psychiatrist had left New York months ago. How the hell did Cole—WOSH!Another slap. Harsher. Louder.“That’s for the other night,” Cole growled, breath hot with fury, “when you drugged Amanda and dumped her on granny’s bed like some scandalous prop—just to make it look like disrespect.”Amanda’s eyes blew wide. She remembered that night. The way her body had felt heavy. The way she'd woken up humiliated in Granny’s bed.But Cole still wasn’t done.WOSH.Another slap. This one was brutal. Tyler staggered back like he’d just caught a punch from a heavyweight fighter.“You hypocritical son of a bitch,” Cole seethed. “You have the audacity to spe

A young, stern-looking man led Grandma into the hall, slow and steady, like she was some fragile antique worth millions. That man was Tyler. One of those types who would shoot you a death glare if you so much as hinted that luck had a hand in their success. Tyler was dressed head-to-toe in a matching designer sweatsuit that screamed money—but let’s be honest, if not for the old woman he was guiding in, the best he’d be wearing was clearance-rack Walmart.Orphaned young. Raised by Grandma. Won her favor. Now practically heir-apparent. But sure, no handouts there, right? Cole let out a silent scoff.Almost as if they heard it, Tyler and Grandma’s gazes snapped toward him at the same time.Grandma didn’t waste a beat. Her eyes scanned the crowd, sharp and accusing, until they landed on Amanda. “Haven’t you brought enough disgrace to this family by marrying this useless rag?” Her voice sliced through the hall, far too loud and strong for someone with one foot in the grave.“Actually, Gra

Despite the short notice, by the time Amanda arrived at the mansion’s banquet hall that evening, every other member of the family was already there. Her eyes swept the room. Everyone was deep in conversation, most of them pretending it was about the afternoon’s deal or some contract—but really, it was just a bunch of high-dollar bragging.“You think Grandma’s finally announcing the heir tonight?” she overheard one of her cousins say from across the hall.“It’s about time,” another groaned. “What’s with all the suspense? She’s not auditioning for a Netflix thriller.”“I literally bought this gown an hour ago. Two million dollars. I refuse to look like background noise when she announces my brother as the heir!” another cousin shrieked, practically throwing her champagne flute into the air like it was a mic drop.Amanda sighed. Yeah. So it was what everyone was talking about. The same tired topic, the same recycled ambition in new designer fits. She turned on her phone and pretended to
