Amanda opened her eyes, every part of her body trembling. Was she... dead? She wasn't. She watched the truck speed off into the distance.

She glanced at Cole. He wasn't injured—he was destroyed. His clothes were soaked in blood.

Everything blurred together: the wailing sirens, climbing into the ambulance with Cole, grabbing his hand and begging him to hang on before they reached the hospital.

Thirty minutes later, Amanda paced the reception area. It felt like hours since they'd rushed Cole into surgery, but none of the doctors or nurses had come out.

Just as she was about to storm through the doors again, the OR opened.

A doctor emerged. Amanda started toward him, then stopped. He had that grim look doctors got before they said, "We lost him"—the kind they tried to cover with a sympathetic smile.

"I don't want to hear it," Amanda burst out. "I just saw him for the first time in three years..." She couldn't finish.

A nurse wheeled someone out. Cole.

Amanda stared back and forth between the doctor and Cole.

"Well, ma'am, I was going to tell you that your husband is a miracle, but you didn't give me the chance," the doctor said with a polite smile.

Amanda let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding.

"If you don't mind, we could tend to your injuries now that you've seen your husband is okay," one of the nurses said, having been trying to get Amanda's attention.

Cole stood up from the wheelchair as the other medical staff left. Amanda was really a woman worth going through hell for. Any other woman would have believed he was guilty from the start.

He walked closer to hug her, but Amanda moved away swiftly.

"The fact that I was worried about you getting hurt doesn't mean I believe what you told me back there," Amanda said. "Anyone would be worried about someone who saved their life."

Cole slowly dropped his arms. "Right... thanks. What do you want me to do?"

Amanda frowned.

"What should I do to prove my innocence to you?"

"I don't know. I wasn't there when it happened, but I'll give you five days," she said. "After five days, if you can't prove your innocence, I'm divorcing you for real."

Cole nodded. Five days was more than enough to get that bastard for screwing him over.

"Ma'am?" The nurse called to Amanda again.

"And," Amanda said as she turned to leave, "don't misunderstand anything. I wasn't that worried about you. I just don't feel any pain right now, and I was thinking of having my personal doctor look at these injuries, so... that's it.”

Cole managed to hide the smile tugging at his lips. Everything might have changed, but nothing compared to knowing his wife was still the same woman he'd risked three years of his life for.

He walked in the opposite direction to get the rest of his treatment.

Inside Amanda's ward, her phone rang.

"Damn," she muttered under her breath before answering.

"You stupid girl!" Her mother's voice blared so loudly that even the nurse gave Amanda a concerned look.

"Just a second," Amanda muttered to the nurse, seeking privacy.

"How far do you want to go to ruin your life? You went to pick that rapist up from prison?!" her mother shouted.

"Mom... he's not a rapist. He's my husband. He just told me what happened. It turns out Blake—you know Blake, don't you, Mom? From the Harrison family—he was the one who did it. Cole only took the fall to protect—"

"You foolish girl," her father's voice cut in. "I don't want to see you anywhere near that worthless idiot."

"He's lying to you now too?" her mother asked. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm still at the hospital."

“Hospital?” her mother repeated, alarm sharpening her voice.

“Yes. We got into an accident somehow.”

“My God—accident? See?! This is exactly what we’ve been warning you about! That man is nothing but bad luck. Are you badly hurt?”

“No,” Amanda replied quietly.

“Thank goodness. Then come home. Now. Grandma’s calling for a family meeting tonight. And listen—divorce that rapist immediately. Maybe, just maybe, Grandma will change her mind.”

"Alright. I'll be bringing Cole—"

"Has the accident affected your hearing? I said don't bring that piece of trash here!" her mother shouted again.

"Dad—" she started, asking for her father's help.

Her father’s voice replaced her mother’s, even colder. “I won’t have this conversation again. Divorce him as fast as possible. I don’t want to see him near you. Ever.”

Amanda sighed. "Okay, Dad." She hung up.

Minutes later, she found Cole waiting for her in the lobby.

"Let's go," she said, already walking toward the door.

"I need to go see—"

"For now, don't see anyone. Let's get you some decent clothes."

"For what?"

"We're meeting Grandma and the rest of my family tonight.”

“You know,” she said casually, “after that kiss yesterday, I was able to remember a few things clearly. But some parts are still…foggy.” She smiled faintly. “I’m also having a one-hour meeting with your mother’s doctor tonight. We’ll talk more about it.”“So?” Cole asked.“So,” she said lightly, “another kiss could help me remember more.”Cole’s jaw tightened. Amanda’s words from the night before surfaced instantly.“But the ring isn’t on my lips,” he said.Maria shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. As long as you’re wearing it, every part of you is connected to it.”Cole felt the ring vibrate faintly around his finger.Maria didn’t notice.“That means,” she continued, leaning closer, “you can touch my forehead and—”She didn’t finish. She grabbed his collar and kissed him.Cole reacted instantly, shoving her away. She stumbled back, nearly hitting her head against the car door.“What the hell was that?” he snapped.Maria stared at him, stunned.“I have a wife,” Cole said.“A contract wife,”

“I think this house will be best for her,” Maria said after the realtor finished the tour. “It’s quiet. Very spacious. She could even have a small garden in the yard.”“Yes, ma’am,” the realtor replied smoothly. “The flowers are handled by the best horticulturist in the city. I can assure you—your mother-in-law will love it.”“She’s not my wife,” Cole said quickly.“Oh—” the realtor smiled sheepishly, clearly trying not to stare at Cole’s hand still intertwined with Maria’s. “My apologies.”“It’s fine,” Maria said lightly.“I’ll make the payment now,” Cole added.Minutes later, the documents were signed electronically. The realtor thanked them repeatedly and left.Cole checked the time. “It’s been one hour.”“That was fast,” Maria said as his hand slipped from hers. “I wish it could’ve gone on a little longer.”Her smile was soft. But not innocent at all. Cole didn’t catch the hint.“Like I said,” Maria continued easily, “I already called my partner. You heard how excited he was on t

“If you have a problem with him,” Amanda said tightly, “just call him and tell him. You think he’s going to rush here after you threaten him with me?”The car stayed quiet for a beat. Then Wright spoke.“He paid five billion dollars to get you out two days ago,” he said calmly. “What can’t a man like that do, Amanda Whitmore?”Her breath stuttered.“Are you mafia too?” she snapped, fear cracking through the anger. “What the hell is wrong with you people? Cole isn’t—”“I don’t like it when women talk too much,” Wright interrupted. “I won’t mind putting you to sleep for two hours.”Silence slammed into her chest.Amanda’s eyes darted sideways. Two men sat beside her. Expressionless. Empty. No guns in sight—but she wasn’t stupid. Men who didn’t need to show weapons were the worst kind. She swallowed.“I wasn’t going to say this,” she said carefully, “but Cole and I… we haven’t been on good terms since last night. If you call him now, he won’t even blink.”No response. The car kept moving

Her phone rang immediately after. Tiffany.Amanda almost declined the call. Almost. She wasn’t scared of that brat—but she also didn’t want Tiffany running her mouth later. She answered.“Did you see the picture I sent you?” Tiffany asked, her voice dripping with mockery.“What should I do with AI-generated images?” Amanda said, forcing her voice into something careless. Light. Almost bored.“She said AI-generated images,” Tiffany burst out laughing on the other end. “I love your delusion, but I don’t have the time—or the patience—to be creating shit.”“I wouldn’t put it past you,” Amanda shot back. “You already go around taking pictures of him.”“Pick one story and stick to it,” Tiffany snapped. “Do you know it’s real or don’t you? Because I’m about to blow your mind and send you the exact address where I saw your husband and some hot woman romancing on the street.”Amanda’s fingers curled into her palm. “Send it,” she said quietly. “If you dare.”“Already did. And we both know the b

“He told me he loves me,” Amanda said suddenly. “Last night. He told me he loves me.” The woman’s expression hardened. “Are you two living together?” Amanda nodded slowly, watching her reaction. It was immediate. Devastating. “He’s a freeloader,” the woman snapped. “Who the hell is he? Tell me right now.” “No—no, ma’am,” Amanda rushed to say. “He’s not like that. He’s just… shy. That’s why he couldn’t tell me about his mother.” “Argh,” the woman groaned dramatically. “Don’t be so easily fooled. If he didn’t tell you about the person he cares about most in the world, then you don’t matter that much to him. And you said it yourself—his mother doesn’t like you.” Amanda studied the woman closely, something clicking in her mind. After a moment, she asked quietly, “Do you know who I am?” The woman blinked, confused. “I’m Amanda Whitmore,” Amanda said. “I’m a celebrity.” The woman gasped, covering her mouth. “Amanda…?” “Good,” Amanda said calmly. “So you know me.” “No, my son

Amanda was having one of the worst days of her life. Some messed-up guy had just walked past with dirt caked all over his shoes. She had no idea where he came from, but the entire place she’d cleaned seconds ago was ruined—like she had been slacking on her job.As if this wasn’t insane enough already. She had to keep her face covered the entire time, terrified that one of her fans might recognize her. For whatever ridiculous agreement she had made with Cole that landed her here, she honestly didn’t know anymore. No idea at all.She didn’t even want to think about what happened the night before. The memory was still crawling under her skin.Fuck.She forced the thoughts away.“Are you done, honey?” the other cleaner asked—a slightly elderly woman, her voice gentle.Amanda tried to smile.
