Chapter 29: The Voice Beyond the Gate

The crack in the world answered him.

Not with words. With movement.

Something vast shifted behind the fracture, and the burial hall shook hard enough to knock dust from a thousand collapsing tombs. Draeven's knees buckled. He caught himself against a broken pillar, Mournhook scraping stone.

Ahead, the six-eyed beast had stopped its charge. For the first time since it tore through the ceiling, it hesitated.

That was worse than the charge had been.

Around the burial hall, the remaining skeletons

The water near the bank rippled against the current.Draeven noticed it a half-second before anyone else did, some old instinct flagging the wrongness of movement that didn't match the flow. He was on his feet before he'd fully processed why, water still streaming off his coat, boots slipping on the mud."Everyone up. Now."Oric didn't question it. Neither did Severin. Malgraves needed a hand to move at all, and Nerez was already trying to push himself upright when the first shape broke the surface twenty feet downstream. It had been human once. That was the worst part. Waterlogged skin hung loose over a frame too thin to have died naturally, eyes clouded white, mouth working in a slow, wet rhythm that wasn't quite speech and wasn't quite hunger. It fixed on the blood trailing from Draeven's burned palm the way a compass fixes on north, and didn't so much walk toward it as drift, current and current alone deciding the pace."Drowned," Ner

  • Chapter 34: What the Water Won't Hold

Nerez didn't answer the question. His silence did it for him, the same way it had answered Draeven's question about the ledger a few minutes earlier."Corporal," Aldric said again, tasting the word like it still meant something to him. "You disappeared so quietly I assumed you'd finally died somewhere useful. And yet here you are, still breathing, still keeping secrets from people who trust you with their lives.""I never lied to him," Nerez said, voice raw."No. You just never mentioned that you helped design the ritual he's dying from." Aldric's gaze slid to Draeven, patient, almost curious. "Did he tell you that part? About his own hands in the early drafts of your curse, back when it still killed nine subjects out of ten?"Draeven's jaw tightened, but he didn't look at Nerez. Not yet. There wasn't time to spend on betrayal, not with the man responsible for three centuries of dead hunters standing twenty feet away, unarmed and untroubled by tha

  • Chapter 33: The Weight of Old Names

The ridge trail narrowed into a scramble of loose rock and root, and Draeven took it at a pace that left his lungs burning and Nerez's weight feeling heavier with every stride. Every few strides, the old hunter's boots dragged instead of stepping, and Draeven adjusted his grip without slowing, refusing to let either of them acknowledge what that meant.Behind them, the horn didn't fade. If anything, it multiplied a second signal answering the first, then a third, spreading out along the treeline like the corps was mapping their position by sound alone."They're boxing us in," Severin said. "Standard containment pattern. Three points, closing.""Then we don't go where the pattern expects us to go." Draeven cut hard left, off the trail entirely, down through a stand of black pine where the ground dropped steep enough to be more fall than descent.Oric swore behind him but followed, dragging Malgraves through the same gap. Branches tore at exposed skin. Somewhere below, water moved a str

  • Chapter 32: Six-Count Spacing

The torchlight outside didn't just stop.It turned.A horn cracked across the treeline, sharp and deliberate, and every point of light beyond the fallen wall began converging on the chapel at once. Shouted orders followed, clipped and precise, the kind that didn't leave room for hesitation."That's a mobilization signal," Severin said, already moving. "They heard that.""Everyone in the valley heard that," Malgraves muttered, struggling upright with Oric's help.Draeven didn't waste breath arguing with a scythe that had just made their situation exponentially worse. He hauled Nerez toward the deeper shadow along the chapel's collapsed north wall, boots crunching over broken tile."Options," he said."Fighting eight trained hunters while carrying two wounded men isn't one of them," Severin said."I didn't ask for the ones that gets us killed.""Then the only door is the one they haven't reached yet." Severin pointed toward a gap in the fallen stonework, barely wide enough for a man to

  • Chapter 31: Footsteps in the Dark

Draeven didn't get the chance to answer.Somewhere deeper in the tunnel, boots struck stone in a rhythm too even to belong to anything that had crawled up from the burial hall. Voices followed low, disciplined, the particular cadence of men trained to move as a unit.Severin's head snapped toward the sound. "That's a church pattern. Six-count spacing.""You're certain?" Malgraves whispered."I trained half of them."Draeven filed Nerez's words away the same way he filed everything he couldn't afford to feel yet into a locked room, door shut, dealt with later. Later was a habit he'd built an entire life on. It would hold a little longer."How many?" he asked.Severin listened for another second. "A search team. Eight, maybe ten. They're not looking for us specifically, not yet but they will be the moment they find that hole in the ceiling."Oric shifted Malgraves's weight against his shoulder. "So we don't let them find it.""We don't have time to hide a collapsed tomb," Draeven said.

  • Chapter 30: The Hand That Waited

Ash-grey fingers curled around the edge of the crack, each one longer than a man's arm, tipped in something too smooth to be bone and too jointed to be metal. The light behind them wasn't fire. It didn't flicker or breathe. It simply existed, cold and patient, the way a held breath exists right before it's let out.Nerez didn't see it coming. He was on one knee, spent from the binding, when the hand closed around his ankle and pulled. He hit the ground hard, dragged a full body-length toward the widening gate before anyone reacted. His notebook no, not his, Draeven remembered a half-second too late, his own skittered across the stone and vanished into the dark beyond the altar."Nerez!" Oric was already moving, axe raised, but the hand was faster than anything that size should have been.Draeven didn't think. He swung Mournhook in a single downward arc, aiming for the wrist-thick joint where fingers met palm. The blade connected. Black ichor sprayed across broken stone, hissing where
