Chapter 12: Web of Blood

The giant purple spiders scrambled down the brick walls of the student dorms, their sharp hairy legs clicking against the hard stone.

Dozens of glowing red eyes stared down at Kai and his small team. The thick white webs covered the entire courtyard, hanging like dirty curtains between the trees and blocking the path to the sports complex.

Behind Kai, the five students from the library gasped in pure fear, stepping back toward the open door.

"Stay behind me and do not touch the white webs," Kai commanded softly, his voice firm and steady. "If you step on the silk, you will stick to the ground like flies."

Kai did not feel any fear. He gripped his blood-bone spear tightly, his eyes cold as he calculated the best way to cut through the monster army. Fighting all these beasts at once in an open yard was foolish. He needed a clear path forward.

"Fang, clear the right side," Kai ordered mentally. "Thralls, take the center."

The massive black shadow-wolf barked once, blurring into a dark shadow as it charged forward. Fang moved with blinding agility, avoiding every thick patch of sticky web on the ground.

The wolf leaped onto the low wall of a concrete bench, springing off it to bite directly into the neck of a incoming spider.

CRACK!

Fang's powerful jaws crushed the spider's head, tossing the dead body aside before slicing another beast with its sharp back bone-spikes.

At the same time, Kai sent his three purple-eyed zombie thralls straight into the middle of the web field. The zombies had no fear and felt no pain.

They marched into the sticky webs, pulling the silk apart with their bare hands and tearing down the hanging traps. Spiders lunged at the zombies, biting into their cold flesh, but the thralls held the beasts tight, giving Kai open targets.

Kai leaped forward like a hunting hawk. His six-foot blood-bone spear whistled through the morning air.

SLASH!

The jagged bone tip sliced through three spider legs in a single horizontal sweep. Green monster blood sprayed across the stone path as the heavy beast fell sideways, screeching in pain. Kai thrust his spear upward, driving the sharp tip straight through the monster's soft underbelly.

[Target Killed! Extracting Attributes: +3 Agility, +3 Stamina!]

Cool energy flooded through Kai's body, keeping his movements lightning fast. He spun his spear around, cutting down two more spiders that tried to jump on his back. His high agility allowed him to dance past the falling acid spit, turning the bloody courtyard into a meat grinder.

The students behind him watched with wide eyes, their hearts pounding in their chests. Kai was moving like a dark god of war, clearing a safe walkway right through the middle of a terrifying monster horde.

Within ten minutes, more than fifteen giant spiders lay dead on the blood-soaked ground. The surviving smaller spiders began to back away, hissing softly as they climbed back up the brick walls to hide in the roof vents.

Kai wiped black blood off his cheek, pointing his spear toward the open doors of the central cafeteria, which stood right between the dorms and the sports complex path.

"The bridge is right past that building," Kai said, his chest rising and falling evenly. "Follow me, stay tight."

They stepped into the large cafeteria hall. It was dark and quiet inside. Broken plastic chairs and wooden dining tables were flipped over everywhere. Heavy white webs hung thick from the ceiling rafters, turning the dark hall into a giant, creepy cave.

Kai walked slowly through the center aisle, his sharp ears listening to every little sound. Fang trotted right beside his boots, his black fur standing up in alert.

Suddenly, a heavy, wet thud echoed from above.

A massive creature dropped straight down from the high ceiling, landing right in front of Kai with a force that cracked the concrete floor.

It was the spider queen. It was twice the size of an automobile, with a thick black shell covered in glowing purple spots. Eight long, jagged legs ended in sharp bone claws, and its giant mouth had two curved fangs dripping clear, smoking acid.

Before Kai could raise his blood-bone spear, the spider queen opened its wide jaw and shot a thick wad of razor-sharp white silk directly at his feet.

SPLASH!

The heavy web hit Kai's boots and shins, wrapping around his legs like iron chains and pinning him instantly to the hard floor. Kai pulled back with all his strength, but the silk was too sticky and strong to break immediately.

The spider queen let out a high-pitched screech, satisfied that its prey was trapped. It lunged forward, raising its heavy front legs and dropping its massive head down. Its huge, acid-dripping fangs opened wide, descending straight toward Kai's exposed face.

The five students behind screamed in complete horror, dropping their iron bats as they saw the giant monster about to bite Kai's head off.

Kai stared directly into the monster's glowing red eyes, his muscles straining against the sticky silk as he prepared to use his heavy shield defense skill.

As the spider queen's fangs drip acid inches above Kai’s face, Fang leaps forward, his bone-spikes flaring with dark energy as he bites the queen's throat.
