Chapter 22

**[Elara]**

The confined space of the hospital room amplified the gunfire until it physically vibrated against my teeth.

Cassian didn’t spray and pray. Even firing one-handed, the weapon bucked with controlled, lethal bursts. The assassin holding the knife to my throat jerked violently as three hollow-point rounds punched through his chest armor. His grip vanished. His dead weight collapsed backward, dragging me down with him.

I scrambled out from under the corpse, my hands slick with his blood, grabbing for my fallen sidearm.

The Arbiter scrambled behind the overturned medical cart, firing blindly over the edge. A bullet grazed the ceramic plating of Cassian’s tactical vest, spinning him slightly.

Cassian didn't take cover. He didn't flinch.

He dropped the empty submachine gun, letting it hang by its tactical sling, and drew the Sig Sauer from his hip in a fluid, continuous motion. He closed the distance in two massive strides, vaulting directly over the hospital bed.

The Arbiter shrieked, raising his weapon, but Cassian’s boot came down squarely on the man’s forearm. Bone splintered loudly.

Cassian pressed the barrel of his pistol against the Arbiter’s perfectly styled hair and pulled the trigger.

The ringing in my ears faded into a thick, suffocating silence.

The room was completely destroyed. The smell of exhaust fumes from the wrecked Ducati mixed horribly with the sharp stench of copper and ruptured oxygen lines.

Cassian stood over the bodies, his chest heaving, his dark eyes sweeping the room for any remaining threats. Then, his gaze snapped to me.

I was kneeling on the linoleum, clutching my gun, staring at him in fractured disbelief.

He had come for me. He had broken out of an iron cage, stolen a motorcycle, and driven it up four flights of hospital stairs just to put himself between me and a bullet.

My eyes dropped to his right hand.

It hung uselessly at his side. The knuckles were raw meat. The thumb joint was grotesquely swollen, hanging at an unnatural angle. I knew exactly what that injury felt like. I knew exactly what it took to inflict it upon yourself.

"You broke your own bones," I whispered, the words scratching at my raw throat.

Cassian looked down at his mangled hand, then back up at my face. The blank, empty stare of the mercenary was gone. The raw, violent protectiveness radiating from him was so intense it made the air feel thin.

"You taught me the fast way," he rasped, his voice rough. He took a step toward me, holstering his weapon. He reached out with his good hand, his fingers brushing my neck where the assassin’s knife had drawn a thin line of blood. "Are you hurt?"

I shook my head, entirely paralyzed by his touch. "Your memories... Cassian, do you remember?"

His jaw tightened. A flash of agonizing frustration crossed his features. "No. I don't remember the empire. I don't remember the wedding. I just remember..." He swallowed hard, his thumb tracing my jawline. "I remember the way you look at me. And I know I would rather rip my own hand off than let you walk into a grave alone."

A sudden, violent tremor rocked the ceiling panels above us.

*Thwump-thwump-thwump.*

The heavy, rhythmic beat of military-grade helicopter blades cutting through the storm.

The tender moment shattered. Reality came crashing back in a tidal wave of panic.

"Lily," I gasped, tearing my gaze away from him.

I bolted out of the room. Matteo was slumped against the hallway wall, clutching a bleeding shoulder, but he was alive. He nodded weakly toward the red exit sign at the end of the corridor.

"Roof access," Matteo coughed. "They took her up."

I didn't stop to check his wounds. I sprinted down the hallway, Cassian’s heavy boots pounding the linoleum right behind me. We hit the metal stairwell door, taking the steps three at a time. My lungs burned, but the adrenaline masked the exhaustion.

The High Table didn't want my sister. They wanted leverage. They wanted a leash to put around the Viper’s neck so they could control the Rossi empire through me.

I kicked the heavy roof access door. It was deadbolted from the outside.

Cassian didn't wait for me to shoot the lock. He slammed his entire body weight against the steel door. The hinges shrieked, the metal buckling outward. He hit it a second time, tearing the frame out of the concrete wall.

We burst out into the freezing alpine storm.

The rain was a blinding sheet of water. The wind from the helicopter's rotors was deafening, forcing me to shield my eyes.

A massive, black transport chopper hovered ten feet above the helipad. It was already lifting off, the side door wide open.

Standing in the doorway was a High Table commander, wearing full tactical gear and a headset.

And in his arms, dangling precariously over the open drop, was Lily.

She looked so incredibly small. Her pale, frail body was wrapped in a hospital blanket. A portable oxygen tank was strapped to her chest, the tubes keeping her alive amidst the violent downwash of the rotors.

I raised my rifle, but my hands were shaking. I couldn't take the shot. If I missed by an inch, I would hit the oxygen tank. It would tear her to pieces.

"Put her down!" I screamed, my voice entirely lost to the roar of the engines.

The commander looked down at us. He pressed a button on his headset, speaking to the pilot. The chopper tilted, gaining altitude, moving away from the edge of the hospital roof toward the black abyss of the lake.

The commander looked directly into my eyes. He smiled, a cold, utterly emotionless expression.

Then, he released his grip.

He didn't throw her. He simply let go of the blanket.

My sister plummeted out of the helicopter, falling through the storm toward the crushing concrete of the helipad below.

Chapter 52**[Elara]**"I didn't use a brute-force algorithm," Leo muttered, shifting his weight under his father’s heavy, expectant stare. "That would have tripped the silent alarms in Matteo’s quarters. I used a mirrored latency spoof."We were still standing in the subterranean vault. The heavy steel door was locked behind us, sealing us inside the syndicate’s most classified room. Cassian had pulled a high-back titanium stool from the corner, sitting down with his arms crossed over his bare chest. He wasn't scolding our son like a typical father catching a teenager sneaking out. He was debriefing him. "A mirrored spoof," Cassian repeated, his tone dangerously neutral. He arched a dark eyebrow. "You bounced a fake IP address off the internal servers to trick the biometric scanner into thinking it was running a routine diagnostic."Leo nodded, a spark of defiant pride briefly cutting through his guilt. "I coded the bypass script on a localized flash drive. When the optic laser sca

Chapter 51[Elara]Silence in a house with a thirteen-year-old boy is rarely a sign of peace. It is usually the gestation period of a catastrophe.I woke at 2:00 AM. The Tuscan villa was wrapped in the profound, heavy quiet of the countryside. Beside me, Cassian was deeply asleep, his broad back rising and falling in a steady, comforting rhythm.I didn't wake him. I slipped out from under the Egyptian cotton sheets, my bare feet making absolutely no sound on the cool hardwood floor. I pulled a silk robe over my shoulders and walked down the sweeping hallway toward Leo’s room. The door was cracked open. The bed was empty.A cold, familiar prickle of adrenaline washed over the back of my neck. I didn't panic. The perimeter alarms were silent. Nine’s invisible watch was unbroken. If a threat had breached the grounds, the house would be screaming. This wasn't an intrusion. This was an excursion.I moved through the dark house, letting the dormant instincts of the Viper guide me. Chapter 50**[Elara]**Peace does not mean a lack of vigilance. It simply means you finally have something worth watching the horizon for. Ten years had passed since the Colosseum. Ten years of unbroken, quiet dominance. We hadn't just rebuilt the Rossi empire; we had fundamentally changed the tectonic plates of the underworld. We ruled not through the terror of ghosts, but through absolute, unyielding economic and strategic supremacy. I stood on the wraparound terrace of our private villa nestled deep in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The late afternoon sun bathed the endless vineyards in a rich, liquid gold. A gentle breeze tugged at the hem of my linen dress. I leaned against the warm stone balustrade, swirling a glass of deep red wine, watching the scene unfolding on the manicured lawn below. Cassian sat at a heavy wrought-iron table beneath the shade of an ancient olive tree. A chessboard rested between him and our thirteen-year-old son. Leo was the spitting image of his fath

  • The Weight of the Crown

Chapter 49**[Cassian]**The Colosseum was a graveyard of ambition. I looked down at the bodies of the seven cartel bosses. Men who had ruled vast, untouchable empires across the globe, now bleeding out in the dirt of a dead arena. They had tried to put a price tag on the Rossi bloodline, and they paid the ultimate toll for their arrogance. The silence of the Roman night was thick, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens responding to the brief, suppressed gunfire. "Matteo," I spoke quietly into my radio. "Deploy the cleanup crews. Erase the bodies. Sanitize the ruins. I don't want a single shell casing left for the authorities to find."*"Understood, Boss,"* Matteo replied, his voice betraying a profound relief. The Capos had expected a bloodbath that would decimate our ranks; instead, Elara’s ghosts had surgically removed the threat without a single Rossi casualty. I turned to my wife. Elara stood rigidly near the center of the arena, her eyes locked on the dark tunnel

  • The Bait and the Trap

Chapter 48**[Elara]**An invitation to the Roman Colosseum at midnight is not a diplomatic gesture. It is a death sentence. Yet, when the Don of the Rossi Syndicate publicly challenges the heads of the seven global cartels to a parley on neutral, historic ground, pride dictates they must attend. To refuse would be to admit cowardice to their own soldiers. Cassian knew exactly how to manipulate the arrogance of men. The ancient amphitheater was bathed in shadows. The modern spotlights that usually illuminated the ruins for tourists had been systematically disabled by Rossi hackers. Only the pale silver light of the half-moon cut through the crumbling stone arches. I stood beside Cassian in the center of the arena floor, the exact spot where gladiators had bled and died two thousand years ago. I wasn't wearing a ballgown. I wore full tactical armor. My hair was braided back tightly, twin ceramic blades strapped to my thighs, and a heavy submachine gun slung across my chest. Beside

Chapter 47**[Cassian]**The Rome penthouse was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic, heavy thud of my boots pacing the length of the war room. I looked at the heavy cardstock photograph resting on the center of the mahogany table. The red crosshair superimposed over my son’s chest felt like a physical knife twisting deep in my gut. Matteo stood near the reinforced door, his assault rifle slung over his chest, his face pale. The Capo had seen me angry, but he had never seen me like this. This wasn't anger. It was a cold, apocalyptic fury that demanded a sacrifice to be satiated. The heavy door opened. Elara walked into the room. She wore the same dark combat gear she had worn to the textile factory in Milan. Her face was an impenetrable mask of absolute ice. She didn't look at Matteo. She walked straight to the table and stared down at the photograph. "Did you kill him?" I asked, my voice a dangerous, low vibration in the quiet room. "No," Elara replied, not looking up. "I let
