Chapter 1: Rejected
My fated Luna rejected me in front of five hundred wolves.
The mating ceremony hall of Silver Moon was dead silent. The great stone hall that had been decorated with white moonflowers and silver candles for this sacred day now felt like a courtroom where I was the criminal. All eyes were on us — on me, Kael, the pack's only surviving Omega, kneeling on the cold stone floor with blood on my lips, and on Selene, the most beautiful she-wolf of our generation, standing over me with nothing but disgust in her perfect blue eyes.
"I, Selene of Silver Moon, reject you, Kael, as my mate and my Luna."
The words were not loud. She didn't shout. She said it coldly, clearly, like she was throwing away trash. But the power of a formal rejection in front of the Moon Goddess altar made the entire hall shake.
My wolf, Fenrir, howled inside my soul. It was not a powerful Alpha howl. It was weak, broken, like a wounded dog. For seven years I had felt the golden mate bond thread connecting my heart to hers. Since I was thirteen years old, I had felt her happiness, her sadness, her laughter. And now, that thread snapped. I felt it physically tear in my chest. A sharp pain exploded in my heart, and blood rushed from my mouth onto the white moonflowers.
No. This cannot be happening. Not today. Not after everything.
"Selene... please..." I reached for her hand with trembling fingers. My hand was dirty, covered in mud from the servant quarters where I lived. "You promised. You promised seven years ago—"
She stepped back quickly, as if my touch would infect her. Her new silver dress — a dress I had saved for three months to help pay for, working extra shifts in the mine — shone under the candlelight.
"Don't touch me, Omega," she spat. Her voice was full of hatred now. "Did you really think I would actually accept YOU? Do you know who I am? I am the daughter of Beta Loren. I am the top-ranked she-wolf in the warrior academy. I scored first in combat, first in strategy. And you? You are an Omega with no wolf power. Your wolf can't even shift properly until last year. I am the future Luna of this pack. I deserve an Alpha. A real Alpha."
Behind her, my step-brother Jax stepped forward. He was everything I was not. Tall, six foot three, his body built from Alpha training since childhood, his black hair slicked back, his golden Alpha aura already radiating even though he was only twenty-one. His wolf, Ragnor, was already at Alpha level, able to crush a rogue with one claw.
He put his arm around Selene's waist possessively and smirked down at me. That smirk I had seen for ten years. Since his father, Alpha Magnus, took me in as a charity case after my parents died in the rogue war.
"Did you hear her, brother?" Jax said the word brother like it was a joke. "She said no. An Omega like you should have known his place long ago. You should have rejected yourself before embarrassing her and embarrassing this entire pack. Did you really think serving her food and carrying her books for three years would make you worthy of a Luna? You were her servant, not her mate."
The pack laughed. Not everyone, but enough. The young warriors laughed the loudest. The she-wolves who were jealous of Selene whispered and giggled.
I remembered everything in that moment. When I was ten, my parents died defending the northern border from rogues. Alpha Magnus brought me to the pack house, but not as a son. As a servant. For ten years I lived in the servant quarters behind the kitchen, eating leftovers, sleeping on a thin mat, while Jax lived in the Alpha suite with a fireplace and a private training ground.
But I never complained. Because of Selene. Selene was the only one who smiled at me in those dark years. When I was thirteen, she was bullied by three she-wolves from Black Stone pack during the inter-pack games. They called her weak because her mother died early. I fought all three of them even though I was an Omega and had not even shifted yet. I got beaten until three of my ribs broke and my face was unrecognizable. She cried and hugged my broken body and said, "Kael, when we grow up, I will be your Luna, and you will never be bullied again. I will protect you."
I believed her. For seven years I believed that promise was my fate.
Every morning I woke up at four in the morning to train in the freezing cold behind the pack house, trying to awaken my wolf earlier than any Omega in history. Every night I hunted white rabbits in the snow for her, because she once said she liked the white rabbit fur. I saved every single coin from my servant wage — three hundred silver coins, all my savings for two years — to buy her a silver necklace with a small moon stone for this exact ceremony. The small wooden box was still in my pocket now, pressing against my leg. I never got to give it to her.
And now she says I am filthy.
"For three years I waited for you," I whispered to Selene, my voice breaking. My hands were shaking so badly I could not control them. "When the rogues attacked last winter, I stood in front of you. I took the claw to my back. The scar is still there. I carried you for two miles in the snow when you sprained your ankle. I—"
"And that was your biggest mistake," Selene cut me off coldly. Her eyes were ice. "You thought being a servant, being a loyal dog, would make you worthy of being my mate? Luna needs a King, Kael. Not a dog that follows her around hoping for scraps. I need a man who can conquer the world for me. What can you conquer? The kitchen?"
Jax laughed and then kicked me. Hard. Right in the ribs where the old rogue scar was.
Pain exploded. I fell sideways to the ground. My weak wolf Fenrir tried to heal me, but Omega healing is slow, too slow. I coughed more blood.
"Enough ceremony," Jax announced loudly to the hall, turning to Elder Rowan and Alpha Magnus who sat on the high seats. "This Omega has disrespected my future Luna and has disrespected the mate bond ceremony. According to pack law section seven, an Omega who is formally rejected by a higher-ranked wolf must be banished to the border for one year to reflect."
Banished. To the Forbidden Forest. No wolf ever returned from there alive. The forest was cursed since the fall of the Lycan Kings a thousand years ago. Even Alphas were afraid to enter. Ancient Lycans — monsters that could kill a hundred wolves alone — were said to still sleep there.
"No!" I tried to stand, using my hands. "Father— Alpha Magnus, please, you took me in—"
Alpha Magnus, the man who raised me, looked away. His face was stone. He would not risk his real son Jax's future Luna for an adopted Omega servant. Elder Rowan, who had taught me to read, also looked down at his hands. He could not help me. Omega law was absolute.
Two pack warriors grabbed my arms and dragged me toward the back door of the hall — the small wooden door that led directly to the muddy path to the Forbidden Forest. My knees scraped against the stone floor.
Selene didn't even look back. She was already turning to Jax, letting him kiss her forehead while I was being dragged away like trash.
As they dragged me through the mud outside, the cold night air hit my bleeding face. My blood dripped, drop by drop, onto the ancient black stone at the forest border — a stone I had passed a thousand times as a servant, but never noticed. It had a strange carving of a giant wolf with a crown, and ancient letters that no one in our pack could read.
The moment my blood touched it, the stone began to GLOW.
Red. Like fresh blood under moonlight. The carving's eyes lit up.
The two warriors holding me froze and screamed, "What the hell is that?!"
A voice, ancient and terrifying, more powerful than any Alpha I had ever felt, exploded inside my head. It was not Fenrir's weak whimper. This was different. This was a KING who had ruled before werewolves even existed.
[DORMANT LYCAN KING BLOODLINE DETECTED... 0.01% AWAKENED]
[CONDITION MET: REJECTION BY FATED MATE + NEAR DEATH + ROYAL BLOOD OFFERING]
[AWAKENING SEQUENCE INITIATED... WARNING: PAIN LEVEL EXTREME]
My body began to burn from the inside. My bones cracked loudly, reshaping. My muscles tore and regrew. My brown eyes turned from weak brown to blood-red gold, glowing in the dark. Black tattoos of ancient wolf runes began to spread from my chest up my neck.
The two warriors let go of me and stumbled back in terror. "Monster! He is a monster!"
Fenrir was no longer whimpering. He was no longer weak. He was ROARING inside me, a roar that made the trees of the Forbidden Forest shake.
I stood up slowly. My torn servant clothes now felt too small. The wind of the forbidden forest howled around me, but it did not feel cold anymore. It felt like it was bowing to me. Shadows bowed.
I looked back at the ceremony hall one last time. Through the window, I could see Selene laughing in Jax's arms, celebrating my banishment.
I touched the blood on my lips and smiled for the first time that night.
"You rejected an Omega, Selene," I said, my voice now deep and layered with another ancient beast, echoing so loud that the two warriors covered their ears. "But you will spend the rest of your life kneeling to a King."
Then I turned and walked into
the Forbidden Forest — not to die.
To return as their nightmare, as their Lycan King.
