The cold didn’t just freeze the skin. It bit straight into the bone, cracking it from the inside out.
Arthur lay flat on his back in the endless expanse of snow, his chest heaving with weak, shallow breaths. White frost caked his eyelashes. Every intake of air felt like swallowing shards of broken glass.
So this is how it ends, he thought, staring up at the grey, lifeless sky of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Exiled. Sentenced to freeze like a dog.
The snow crunched nearby. Slow, deliberate steps.
Arthur tried to turn his head, but his neck was stiff as iron.
"Look at him, Dr. Vance," a woman’s voice drifted down, cold and smooth, devoid of the slightest tremor. "He’s still breathing. He really is like a cockroach."
Arthur’s eyes strained open.
Standing above him, wrapped in thick, fur-lined coats were his wife, Eleanor, and her personal doctor—Dr. Marcus Vance.
"Human survival instinct is remarkably resilient, my dear," Marcus said smoothly, adjusting his gloves. He looked down at Arthur with quiet amusement. "Though in temperatures fifty below zero, instinct only prolongs the agony."
Arthur cracked his blood-crusted lips. "Eleanor..." His voice was barely a raspy whisper. "Why... why are you here? You shouldn't be out in the wild..."
"Why am I here?" Eleanor knelt down, resting her hands on her knees. Her eyes held no grief, no trauma, no sign of the broken, sobbing woman who had stood in the courtroom three days ago. "I came to watch you die, Arthur. I wanted to see the look on your face when you finally realized how thoroughly you lost."
"Lost...?" Arthur groaned, a tear freezing instantly on his cheek. "The children... our three babies... I tried to protect you all... I spent months out in the ruined sectors searching for food..."
"Oh, stop it!" Eleanor snapped, laughing softly—a sharp, cutting sound that echoed over the barren ice. "Your endless whining about how hard you worked! You were never home! You left me alone!"
"I was hunting for supplies to keep you alive!" Arthur squeezed his eyes shut, the agony of the memory washing over him again.
The courtroom. The jury. The stern face of the judge.
“The defendant, Arthur Pendelton, abandoned his mentally unstable wife for weeks on end,” the lead juror had read, his voice dripping with disdain. “His complete lack of emotion during these proceedings—not a single tear for his three murdered children—shows a cold, sociopathic indifference. We find him guilty of gross negligence and domestic psychological abuse, driving the victim to a psychotic break.”
Arthur hadn't cried because he was in shock. His mind had completely shattered. He couldn't process the blood on the nursery floor, the tiny blankets, the silence. He had frozen on the outside because he was dying on the inside.
And Marcus had stood on the witness stand, adjusting his glasses, speaking with calm authority: “As a board-certified psychiatrist, I treated Mrs. Pendelton. The trauma of years of severe neglect and emotional abuse by her husband directly induced her severe postpartum breakdown. She is not a killer, ladies and gentlemen. She is a victim.”
"You lied..." Arthur muttered in the snow, staring up at Marcus. "You lied to the court... You made them think I abused her..."
"I didn't lie, Arthur," Marcus smiled gently, as if speaking to a child. "I merely gave the jury the story they wanted to hear. People love a tragic victim. And a cold, distant husband who spends weeks away from home makes such a convenient villain."
"You monster..." Arthur coughed, spitting a fleck of dark red onto the snow. "She killed our children! She smothered them in their cribs!"
"Oh, Arthur," Eleanor leaned closer, her eyes gleaming with a terrifying, twisted light. "You still don't get it, do you? They weren't our children."
Arthur froze. "What?"
"They weren't yours," Eleanor whispered, leaning into his ear. "I cheated on you before the apocalypse even started. I slept with Marcus for months. When I got pregnant with triplets, I was so sure they were Marcus's. I raised them thinking they were his legacy."
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "No... no..."
"Imagine my absolute disgust," Eleanor sneered, her face contorting with genuine hatred, "when Marcus ran the genetic tests last year. Do you know what the results said, Arthur? They were yours. All three of them. Biological, 100% Arthur Pendelton."
Arthur stared at her, his brain struggling to grasp the grotesque logic. "They were my children... and you killed them because... because they were mine?"
"I couldn't stand the sight of them!" Eleanor hissed. "Every time they looked at me with your eyes, I felt like throwing up! I wanted Marcus's children, not a loser's! So Marcus gave me the push I needed. He told me how to end it. He told me how we could use their deaths to get rid of you forever!"

Arthur chewed slowly, letting the sweet syrup and heavy oil coat his tongue. He swallowed with a deliberate, smooth gulp, his eyes fixed dead on Eleanor’s face.Eleanor stood frozen beside the table, her breath caught in her throat. She stared at his neck, watching his throat move as he swallowed every single drop."Mmm," Arthur said softly, setting his fork down with a quiet clatter. "That’s really quite good, Eleanor. The syrup has a very rich flavor today."Eleanor’s lips trembled. A sudden wave of intense panic and dark adrenaline hit her so hard her stomach churned. She grabbed her mouth with both hands, letting out a wet, choked gasp."Oh... oh God," Eleanor stammered, stepping backward away from the table. Her face had gone completely pale. "Arthur... I... I need to excuse myself."Arthur tilted his head, watching her with a cool, unblinking gaze. "Are you alright, sweetheart?""It’s... it’s the pregnancy hormones," Eleanor choked out, tears of wild anxiety springing to her eye

Arthur chewed slowly, letting the sweet syrup and heavy cooking oil coat his tongue. He swallowed with a deliberate, smooth gulp, keeping his eyes fixed straight on Eleanor's face.Eleanor didn't move. She didn't even seem to be breathing. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot around the edges, her pupils dilated as she stared at his throat, waiting for the deadly chemical to seize his muscles and tear his heart apart."Mmm," Arthur said softly, dabbing the corner of his mouth with a napkin. "That’s really quite good, Eleanor. The syrup has a very rich... distinct flavor today.""D-does it?" Eleanor stammered, her voice thin and high. She clasped her hands together in front of her apron, her chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged beats. "It’s... it’s a new brand I picked up. I’m glad you like it. Eat more, Arthur. Finish the whole plate.""You really outdid yourself," Arthur murmured. He picked up his fork, cut another generous piece, and brought it straight to his mouth.Eleanor’s tongu

The morning sun broke gently through the blinds, casting long, golden streaks across the kitchen floor.Arthur was already sitting at the head of the dining table, fully dressed, quietly reading the morning paper. He looked relaxed, his posture easy, his face completely free of the tension that had filled the house for days.In his former life, mornings like this had been entirely different. Arthur used to wake up before dawn every single day. He would scrub the kitchen, mop the floors, prepare an elaborate hot breakfast for Eleanor, and leave a loving note on her tray before rushing out the door to work twelve-hour shifts. He had slaved away just to earn a tiny smile from her. Now, he simply sat back, turning a page of the newspaper with a crisp, slow snap.A soft rustle came from the hallway stairs. Eleanor walked into the kitchen, wearing a silk robe. For the first time in weeks, she wasn't scowling. Her usual cold, sharp glare was gone, replaced by a strange, eager brightness. Her

Printed right across the tiny prescription label was the official seal and signature of Dr. Marcus Vance.Arthur sat frozen in his basement chair, his chest heaving with silent, heavy gasps. How?The question pounded against the inside of his skull like a sledgehammer. How could a woman I lived with for years... a woman who swore to love me... look me in the eye every morning while planning to put venom in my food? How could Marcus stand in my home, act like a professional doctor, and hand her the weapon to wipe me off the earth?A terrible, morbid curiosity took hold of him. With trembling fingers, Arthur slowly twisted the cap. The seal broke with a faint snap. He brought the rim of the bottle just an inch from his nose and took a tiny, cautious breath. The sten
Chapter 6
The house was completely silent, swallowed by the heavy dark of midnight. In the small basement office, the only light came from the dim glow of Arthur’s laptop screen. Outside the window, a quiet wind rustled the trees, but inside, Arthur’s mind was racing like a war engine.Spread across the wooden desk were notebooks, maps, and printed documents. Two months, Arthur thought, his eyes scanning the lists he had been furiously typing out. Only two months until the solar flares hit, the power grids collapse, and society falls apart. He muttered to himself under his breath as he checked off items on his screen. "Water purification tablets... five hundred cans of non-perishable food... solar generators... heavy duty locks for the basement door..."For the first time since he woke up in the past, Arthur felt a tiny flicker of focus. A small sense of relief. He had the knowledge of the future. He knew what was coming. He could secure a bunker, hoard supplies, and protect his life before the

He forced a stiff, professional smile onto his lips, adjusting his tie with a twitchy hand."Arthur, listen to yourself," Marcus said, his voice trying to sound firm and patronizing. "You're speaking in riddles and making wild accusations. You are under a massive amount of stress with the news of triplets, but attacking me won't solve your personal problems.""Stress?" Arthur repeated softly, a faint, terrifying smile playing on his lips. "No, Doctor. I'm not stressed at all. I’m actually quite fascinated by how business works."Marcus frowned, his guard instantly rising higher. "Business? What are you talking about?""Your private clinic," Arthur said, leaning back in his c
