The claw retracted, leaving a jagged, splintered hole in the wood. A foul, metallic stench—like rusted copper and rot—seeped through the rift, turning the air inside the apartment heavy and nauseating.

"Five minutes," Adriano whispered, his voice trembling. "Everyone, into the bathroom. Get behind the tub and stay low. Don't make a sound."

"What about you?" Mrs. Gable cried, her hands gripping her shawl until her knuckles turned white.

"I have to reinforce the lock," Adriano said, his jaw set. "If it breaks in, I’m the only one who can try to push it back. Go! Now!"

Leo grabbed Sarah and Jax, ushering them toward the back of the studio. Adriano watched them huddle together, then turned his attention back to the door. The wood groaned. The 'Hunter' wasn't just hitting it; it was picking at the lock with a singular, terrifying intelligence.

[ WARNING: INTEGRITY AT 40% ]

Adriano gritted his teeth. His mind felt like it was being stretched over a hot furnace. He reached out to the interface, his fingers dancing through the air as he channeled every ounce of his focus into the deadbolt.

"Stay shut," he hissed. "You stay shut, dammit."

As the golden light pulses intensified, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from outside the apartment. It wasn't the monster’s heavy thud. It was light, frantic, and unmistakably human.

"Hey! Can you hear me?" A woman’s voice whispered through the crack in the wall, urgent and breathless. "The staircase is clear for ten seconds. If you have any supplies, you need to move now. The air pressure is about to collapse the floor!"

Adriano froze. He looked at the hole in his door, then at the bathroom door where his group was hiding. He risked a glance through the splintered wood. A woman in a dark, tactical jacket, her face smeared with soot, was crouched in the hallway. She held a heavy, customized serrated blade in one hand and a medical kit in the other.

"Who are you?" Adriano whispered, his voice barely audible over the monster’s growl.

"Someone who wants to live past tonight," the woman replied, not looking back. "I’m Sofia. You’ve got a containment field, right? I can smell the ozone. Listen, I have antibiotic supplies and a tourniquet. You look like you’re about to lose your mind holding that wall up. Do you want the gear or do you want to die when that thing shreds your door in two minutes?"

Adriano felt the logic of the system war with his survival instinct.

"Why are you helping me?"

"Because you’re the only one in this building who isn't a mindless husk," she snapped, looking at him now. Her eyes were sharp, calculating. "And because I need a safe place to reload. Now, are you opening this, or should I let the monster eat you first?"

Adriano hesitated. The System interface flickered in his peripheral vision, buzzing with a new, aggressive prompt.

[ CAPACITY: 5/5 ]

[ WARNING: PROXIMITY ALERT ]

[ EXTERNAL ENTITY DETECTED ]

"I'm at capacity," Adriano said, his heart hammering. "If I let you in, the system might collapse the whole barrier."

"Then expand it, you idiot!" Sofia retorted. She lunged, plunging her blade into the wall near the door—not to break in, but to pin back a secondary appendage that was snaking around the corner. "You think this is a static game? The system is a resource. Force it to acknowledge the trade!"

"How?"

"Don't think about 'keeping,' think about 'growing'!" she shouted, parrying a strike from the darkness of the hallway. "If you don't grow, you die. It’s that simple!"

Adriano looked at the interface. Grow. He shut his eyes, feeling the golden threads of the barrier. He didn't just want to wall off the room anymore; he wanted to claim the space she occupied. He felt the mental strain—the sheer weight of his capacity limit—and he pushed against it, not with fear, but with a desperate, crushing demand.

[ CAPACITY LIMIT: 5/5 ]

[ UPGRADE REQUIRED: CONSUME 10% OF INTERNAL RESERVES? ]

"Do it," Adriano muttered.

A surge of white-hot agony flared in his skull. His nose began to bleed, the copper taste metallic and sharp. The golden barrier surged, expanding outward into the hallway like a floodlight, consuming the space Sofia stood in and slamming into the creature, throwing it backward with a screech that shattered the windows at the end of the hall.

"Now! Inside!" Adriano commanded, dropping the lock.

Sofia vaulted through the gap, rolling across the floorboards and coming up in a perfect crouch, her blade at the ready.

"Nice," she panted, her eyes scanning the room. She looked at the bathroom, where the others were staring in horror. "You’ve got a lot of dead weight in there."

"They’re my neighbors," Adriano said, stumbling back. His vision blurred. "You said you had supplies?"

Sofia tossed the medical kit onto the floor. "I’ve got meds, a bit of canned protein, and enough adrenaline to keep us going through the morning. But we need to talk about that 'capacity' issue."

"You know about the system?"

Sofia laughed, a dry, humorless sound. She stood up and walked toward the bathroom, her eyes locking onto the trembling Jax. "I know that it’s not just a barrier. It’s a hierarchy. And right now, you’re sitting on top of a throne of nothing."

"Adriano, who is she?" Leo stepped out of the bathroom, his face twisted in distrust. "You brought someone else in? We’re already at the limit! You said it—if we add more, we lose!"

"I expanded it," Adriano said, his voice raspy. He wiped the blood from his lip. "I had to."

"You sacrificed your own health to bring in a stranger?" Leo spat, pointing at Sofia. "Are you out of your mind? She’s an outsider! What if she’s one of them?"

Sofia didn't flinch. She simply tapped the blade of her knife against the doorframe. "I’m the one who just kept you from getting your throat ripped out in the hallway. Maybe show a little gratitude, kid?"

"Enough!" Adriano shouted, the authority in his voice crackling with the same golden static he’d used to push the monster back.

The room went silent. The air grew heavy, the golden dome of the barrier humming with a low, vibrating intensity.

"Sofia is staying," Adriano said, his gaze hard. "She has supplies, and she can fight. If we want to survive the night, we need more than just a locked door. We need to hold our ground."

"Hold our ground?" Jax whispered. "Adriano, that thing is still out there. It’s not going to just walk away because you expanded the wall."

"No," Sofia agreed, walking to the window and peering through the slit of the blinds. "It’s going to call for more. You’ve marked this room as a 'Safe Zone,' which basically makes us a beacon. Everything in the building knows where the food is."

Adriano leaned against the wall, his head throbbing. "So what do we do?"

Sofia turned back, her expression unreadable. She walked right up to him, close enough that he could see the dirt under her fingernails and the exhaustion in her eyes.

"We stop playing defensive," she whispered. "You have the capacity to upgrade. I have the knowledge of how to navigate the 'levels.' You want to save these people? Then you need to stop being their babysitter and start being their commander."

Adriano stared at her. "Commander? I’m just an accountant, Sofia. I don't even know how I did what I just did."

"You did it because you were desperate," she said, pulling a small, glowing shard of glass from her pocket—a remnant of some previous encounter. "And believe me, the system loves desperation. It rewards the hungry."

She held the shard out to him. It pulsed with a faint, violet light, distinct from the golden hue of his own barrier.

"What is that?"

"A tether," Sofia said. "A way to see the nodes. If you accept it, you stop being a passenger in your own life."

Adriano looked at the shard, then at his neighbors—scared, helpless, waiting for him to do something. He thought about the woman in the hall, the one he hadn't saved. He thought about the monster’s claw.

He reached out and took the shard. The moment his skin touched it, the interface in his eyes exploded with new information.

[ INTEGRATION SUCCESSFUL ]

[ NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: SENSORY MAPPING ]

[ CAPACITY UPGRADE: 5/10 ]

Adriano let out a shaky breath, his knees buckling slightly. The room felt different. He could feel the pulse of the building, the vibrations of movement in the floors below, and the collective terror of the people trapped within his reach.

Sofia smirked, her eyes glinting with a dangerous realization. "Oh, you feel it now, don't you? You’re not just a survivor anymore, Adriano. You’re the one holding the map."

"What have I gotten myself into?" he muttered, closing his eyes as the map of the building flooded his mind.

"Something big," Sofia replied, looking toward the door. "Something that’s going to require a lot more than just five people to win."

Outside, the hallway erupted in a cacophony of screeching, the sound of hundreds of claws raking against the concrete, signaling that the hunt had just shifted from a local skirmish to a total war.

She stood close to him, her hand hovering near her blade, her eyes scanning the dark corridor. "Did you break it?"Adriano shook his head, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. "Not yet. I… I forced the system into a loop, but the Purge command is hardcoded. It’s overriding my input.""So we’re still dying," Leo said from the back, his voice rising

Sofia choked out, dragging herself upright against a rusted pylon. "Is the sector clear?"Adriano stared at his interface. The blue light was erratic, strobing like a failing bulb. "It’s not finished. The upload hit ninety-nine percent, then locked. The terminal... it’s bricked, Sofia.""So we're sitting ducks," she spat, checking the magazine of her sidearm. "And that beacon on your belt is still singing."Adriano tore the device off his waist and hurled it into the darkness of the tunnel. His eyes were not glowing anymore, but they retained a predatory, crystalline clarity that sent shivers down Adriano’s spine."Who are you?" Adriano shouted, his voice cracking. "What do you mean, 'something worse'?"The boy didn't move. He simply tilted his head, his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his tattered jacket. "You broke the lock, Accountant.
