Zhilak ripped the message from the gate. Blood smeared his fingers. Fresh. Hours old at most.

"It's a trap." Miranda stated the obvious.

"I know." He folded the paper. Put it in his pocket. "I'm going anyway."

Elysia grabbed his arm. "Alone? That's exactly what he wants."

"Then he gets what he wants." Zhilak pulled free. Started walking toward the city proper. "Stay here with Ryn. Find their parents if they're still alive."

"Like hell." Elysia matched his stride. "You don't get to martyr yourself again."

"This isn't martyrdom. It's negotiation."

"With the man who whipped you? Who called you worthless?" Her voice rose. "He'll kill you the moment you walk through his door!"

"Maybe. But he won't kill Kaelin's crew if I show up." Zhilak's jaw tightened. "That's the only math that matters."

They reached the slum district. The streets were empty. Wrong. These alleys usually crawled with people. Now just silence and shuttered windows.

A child's voice called from a rooftop. "Zhilak! Up here!"

Zhilak's Chaos blast hit the first wave of controlled bodies. They burned. More stepped over them."The seed!" Veyra's voice layered with hundreds. "Give it to me!""No." Zhilak backed deeper into the vault. The seed pulsed in his hand. Hot. Alive. The leash flared. Astraea's voice cut sharp. "Don't let her take it."Veyra advanced. Her reformed crown blazed. "I don't need permission."Black power shot from her hand. Zhilak's Harmony shield caught it. Barely. The force drove him against the crystal pedestal."Thorne gave me his fragments before Obliteration consumed him." Her smile showed teeth. "A peace offering. He wanted death. I gave him oblivion."She gestured. Twenty controlled bodies grabbed Zhilak. Pulled him down. Fingers pried at his grip. His Chaos flared. Bodies burned. More replaced them."I control three thousand minds," Veyra said. "How many can you kill?"The vault door sealed. Just Zhilak, Veyra, Harlan unconscious, and dozens of puppets. The seed responded to his pul

  • No Mercy

Harlan smiled. "Elara has been... cooperative. Cleaning chambers. Cooking meals. Living as a servant in her own home. Because I threatened to kill you if she resisted.""I'm already dead to you. You said so yourself.""I lied. I always knew you'd survive. You're too stubborn to die." Harlan gestured. Guards entered, dragging Kaelin and the others. All bound. All bruised. "So here's my offer. Take over the Marston name. Become the heir. And I release everyone. Your mother lives in comfort. Your friends go free.""And if I refuse?""I execute them. Starting with your mother. Make you watch. Then I trigger the deadman seal in my vault." Harlan's smile widened. "The one that destroys everything inside if my heart stops while active. Including the Aether seed you're really here for."The leash in Zhilak's chest constricted. Hard. Astraea was listening. And she was not pleased."You'd destroy the seed?" Zhilak forced the words out. "That dooms everyone. The seal fails, the Consume breaks fr

  • The Collector Arrived

Astraea stepped through the silver rift and Zhilak's heart stopped.Elysia's knife was already moving. Miranda flanked left. Both striking for vital points.Astraea caught both blades between two fingers. Didn't even look."Aggressive. I like that." She released the weapons. "But unnecessary. I'm not here to fight.""Then why are you here?" Zhilak positioned himself between her and his friends. The leash in his chest burned."To collect what's mine." Astraea pointed at the Subjugation fragments scattered in the sand. "Those pieces are bleeding power. Destabilizing local reality. I'm doing you a favor."The Brighton soldiers regrouped. Their leader struggled to his feet, chest still smoking from Zhilak's blast. "Lady Astraea. The Brighton family offers tribute if you'll—"She waved her hand. He ceased speaking. Couldn't. His mouth opened and closed silently."I don't negotiate with mortals who exploit children." She walked to the kid lying in the sand. Checked their pulse. "This one wi

The Conclave hauled them through three rifts before questions started.Lysander stood in a sterile white chamber, his crown dimmed. Six Wardens flanked him, hands ready on weapons. Zhilak sat in a metal chair bolted to the floor. Restraints on his wrists. Not tight enough to hurt. Just enough to remind him who held power here."You sealed an entity that's consumed galaxies." Lysander's voice stayed flat. "Alone. After your Crown abandoned you. Explain."Zhilak met his eyes. The crystal in his chest pulsed. Warning. "Kael Omnixir showed me the weak point. I used the Master Crown as an anchor.""Kael Omnixir died two thousand years ago.""He was alive. Chained inside the Consume. Kept as a permanent food source."Meridian stepped forward. "We scanned the sealed site. Found no trace of a second consciousness. Just you. And the signature of something else. Something that pulled you out before the rift closed completely."The leash tightened. Silver threads cutting into his chest from the

Zhilak's hands moved before his mind caught up. Right palm blazed red. Chaos shot forward, aimed at Astraea's chest. The blast dissolved three feet from her throne. No shield. No barrier. Just gone."Cute." Astraea didn't move. "But Dominion left you when you sealed the Consume. You're running on fumes."Zhilak looked at his wrist. The black threads were gone. Red and blue chains remained, but faded. Dying embers."How am I alive?" His voice cracked. "I dissolved. Completely.""I put you back together." Astraea gestured at the crown-covered walls. "Each of these holds a different aspect of reality. Creation. Destruction. Time. Space. I simply used the right combination."She stood. The movement made the throne room's Aether ripple. "The Consume wasn't always a mindless hunger. I created it. Shaped it. Pointed it at worlds I wanted cleared."Zhilak backed toward the door. His legs shook. Harmony flickered weakly, trying to stabilize his reformed body."There's no door behind you," Astr
