"Are you sure this thing can still run?"

Wren said it while kicking the flat front tire. An old car, an American sedan from the two thousands, paint peeling, windshield cracked like a spider web, parked crooked in front of a garage on the outskirts of Tucson. The key was still in the ignition.

"We don't have a choice," Kael said. She was already in the driver's seat, turning the key. The engine coughed twice, then started. Rough sound, but alive. "Dash, get in. Wren, help Theo in the back."

  • Chapter 33: The Recipe for Kael

Bread does not need VSP. Bread does not need a double acid. Bread does not need double time. Bread only needs flour, water, salt, yeast, and time. Inside the kitchen of The Rusty Skillet three weeks after the raid, Kael Mireaux learned that making bread was the hardest thing he had ever done—harder than killing a Rank-A beast, harder than leading a platoon, harder than anything he had ever faced as a Hunter."You are kneading it too hard," Wren said from the counter. She sat on the tall stool with her legs dangling, her nose working as she sniffed the dough Kael held in both hands. "The yeast is dead. You killed it."Kael looked down at the dough in his hands. It should have been elastic, soft, and alive, but it felt as hard as a stone. "How do you know the yeast is dead?""I can smell it," Wren replied. "Living yeast smells like breath. Warm. A little sour. Dead yeast smells like earth. Dead earth."Kael tossed the ruined dough into the waste bin, grabbed a fresh bag of flour, and st

  • Chapter 32: Aftermath

They returned to Ironway in a silence heavier than any blow from a Rank-A beast they had ever faced. One thousand Hunters marched in a formation that felt far too loose. There were empty gaps between the ranks, armor that was no longer whole, and wounds still bleeding beneath makeshift bandages. Behind them rolled the Mobile Kitchen, its stoves cold and its pans still carrying the lingering scent of a rendang no one needed anymore. At the front, by the southern gate of Ironway, stood Aldric Sonnenveld. He was not flanked by two platoons, nor did he hold his weapon at the ready. He stood entirely alone. Behind him waited four thousand people who already knew the truth through radios, rumors, and a silence louder than any shout.Field Cook Dashiell Vreeland hadn't come back."Commander," Kael said, his voice hoarse from two days without sleep or food. His full armor still weighed him down, but the knife in his hand no longer felt like a part of him.Aldric looked at him with his unmovin

  • Chapter 31: Inside the Rift

"Are you sure this is going to work?"The old man—the former chef from Flagstaff, his skin half caramelized and his eyes barely human anymore—stared at Dash with what little consciousness he had left. Around him, four other cooks lay across the giant pan made of a metal that wasn't quite metal. It was a pan that pulsed. A pan that was hungry."I'm not sure," Dash replied. His voice was completely flat, but his hands—holding the portable pan he had brought from Ironway—were shaking. "But it's the only way.""And you..." The old man paused, swallowing hard. "You won't come back.""I know."Silence filled the space, broken only by the low hum of the giant kitchen surrounding them: a stove the size of a house, a frying pan as wide as a field, and flames burning straight out of the earth itself. The aroma of cooking was so thick that Dash could feel it right against his skin. It wasn't a pleasant smell. It was an ancient scent that had been cooking for years, having spent decades preparing

  • Chapter 30: The Great Raid

"Are you sure one thousand Hunters are enough?"Kael stood beside the Mobile Kitchen in full armor with his knife in hand, staring south toward the three pulsing orange columns of light in the distance like a heart too large for its chest."Enough to reach the Rift," Dash replied from the driver's seat. His hands rested on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the cracked road marked by black veins. "Not enough to close it.""Then who closes it?"Dash didn't answer. He simply looked back toward the two hundred cooks marching in step behind the Mobile Kitchen, their aprons still smelling of smoke and spices, their hands bearing the lingering scent of salt and acid.Kael followed Dash's gaze, and understanding finally hit him."Two hundred cooks on the outside," Kael whispered. "One on the inside.""One on the inside," Dash repeated.Silence followed, broken only by the hum of the Mobile Kitchen's engine and the grinding of its wheels over the fractured ground."Who?" Kael asked.Dash d

  • Chapter 29: The Rescue Mission

"Enter the Rift? That is suicide."Aldric stood in front of the Mobile Kitchen, his granite expression harder than usual. Behind him, a thousand Hunters stood in formation for the raid. They wore full armor with their weapons at the ready. Beside them stood two hundred cooks in aprons still smelling of smoke and spices, awaiting orders."There are people inside," Dash said. His voice was completely flat, but beneath it lay something Aldric had never heard from his Field Cook before. It was anger. "Humans. They are trapped inside. And they are being cooked.""We don't have time for this." Aldric pointed south toward the three pulsing orange columns of light in the distance. "The raid is already planned. Fourteen days of preparation. A thousand Hunters. Two hundred cooks. If we delay—""We aren't delaying," Dash said, staring straight into Aldric's eyes. "We are doing both. The rescue mission happens now. The raid happens tomorrow.""And what if this rescue mission takes longer than one

  • Chapter 28: Raid Preparation

Fourteen days was not enough time to turn twenty-four cooks into two hundred, but fourteen days was all Aldric was giving them, and Dash never asked for more time than he could cook with. That morning, the Ironway command room smelled of synthetic coffee and cold sweat. Aldric stood in front of a large map spread across the steel desk, where red pins marked three locations: the monster nest in the south near the orange Rift, and a central point Aldric called zero."The raid starts in fourteen days," Aldric said. His voice was flat, but his fingers tapping against the desk betrayed his tension. "Two hundred cooks. One thousand Hunters. The Mobile Kitchen on the front lines. The goal is the monster nest, and the objective is to close the Rift."Dash stared at the map. "Two hundred cooks? I only have twenty-four.""Then you train another one hundred and seventy-six in fourteen days." Aldric looked him straight in the eye. "Supplies from other strongholds have already arrived. Flagstaff s
