The sanguis talked. It was not fluent speech, but it talked still.

I didn't know they could do that. On further inspection, I noticed this one was far different from the others.

I realized why there weren't any sanguis in the building. It was because of the monster in front of me. I had just stepped into its lair.

The very sight of it brought fear unto me. Its upper body was still human-like, though its skin peeled off and its ribs ripped from its body. It bared fangs, and its arms ended in claws.

Its lower body was like that of a spider, with many claw-shaped legs that pierced through the very ground as it walked.

"You... Come... Me..."

It spoke again.

I immediately turned back. I wasn't foolish enough to fight it, but upon trying to run, it lunged forward, blocking the door.

"You... come... meeee!!"

It lunged at me again. I was quick to jump away. Its claws pierced through the concrete ground like it was wet paper where it landed.

I pulled out the UMP and started shooting at its face.

The bullets damaged its face, but it healed almost instantly.

I froze, unable to do anything. My bullets weren't working. What else could I do?

It grabbed my foot with its claws. I could hear the sound of breaking bones. The pain as I saw my own bone poke out of my leg.

It swung me into a wall, hammering me at full force, followed by a splattering sound that left blood spilling everywhere.

It hurt. My whole body... hurt.

I saw my blood pour out of the wound that had opened up near my rib from the impact.

It looked normal. No crawling. Just normal blood.

"Help me," I whispered to my own blood. My voice was low as I couldn't muster the breath to talk.

The sanguis raised its claws, ready to finish me off. This was certainly the end for me. My pathetic and meaningless life.

Swoosh!

Bang!

My arm immediately transformed into a claw, smacking the sanguis's claw and deflecting it away.

I felt my blood crawl back into my body. It felt disgusting—the feeling of something crawling inside of you.

The sanguis swung at me again. But this time, I could see its attack. It wasn't like before. It was slower.

I side-stepped, narrowly avoiding being struck, before jumping and swinging my fist at it.

Without my command, my blood covered my fist, peeling my flesh away to form a giant hand structure.

Bang!

I punched it so hard it went slamming through a wall.

The sanguis got back to its feet. It seemed surprised. It didn't know what the hell was happening. I was just as lost as it was. I could control my own body, but it seemed my blood still acted on its own.

The sanguis attacked again, swinging two claws at me. I caught them. I squeezed with all my strength. I could hear its claws breaking—the sound of bones cracking.

It tried pulling away, but it couldn't. I swung its body with all my strength and slammed it on the other side of the wall.

It felt different. I felt in control. I felt powerful. My mouth began to water as I slowly walked to the sanguis. I saw fear in its eyes. It didn't know what was happening.

My claw began shape-shifting again, into a giant scythe-like shape.

The sanguis tried running, but I swung forward, slicing it clean in half.

Splash.

It fell to the ground, but it was still healing. I saw its blood desperately try to stitch itself back together.

I walked closer and stepped on its head, applying force little by little until I crushed its skull.

It stopped moving. It was dead.

"It's over," I said with a sigh.

Suddenly, my own arm pulled forward without my consent, forming into a giant mouth and swallowing the sanguis whole. It was absorbing it.

I fell to the ground. I felt pain in my stomach, a churning. I saw my reflection on the floor. My eyes were turning black, and my pupils red.

"Argh!" I screamed, trying to hold myself back.

Before I knew it, I found myself waking up. I had fallen unconscious.

I pulled myself up. I felt no fatigue at all. My body felt fresh.

I stared at my hands. They looked normal now. But they weren't. They couldn't be. I had just... eaten something alive. And part of me liked it.

I looked left. The door to the labs. I didn't waste any time and went in immediately.

I walked straight into Doctor Elana's old office. I searched everywhere. Nothing.

There was nothing... until.

I heard a beeping noise. Very silent, but it was there. I pulled the cabinets to see what made those beeping noises.

It was a flash drive. I looked around. I looked for a computer. There was nothing.

Everything was destroyed.

But it clicked to me. There was a data room in the basement where we kept every file and information on our experiments. I remembered it was still sealed during the experiment. Maybe the computers there still worked.

I hurried down. The door was locked with a padlock. I pulled out my Desert Eagle and shot the lock.

I hurried in. Maybe this flash drive had something.

I saw the computers—all dusty with cobwebs all over.

I tried computer after computer. Dead. Dead. Dead. Each failure made my chest tighten. Then—a hum. One powered on. It was an old RCT computer.

It took several minutes before it was on. I plugged the flash drive in.

It was coordinates to a location.

I saw a folder just above the screen and clicked it open.

It was a video, and it played. It was Doctor Elana talking. There seemed to be chaos from the background.

"If anyone is watching this, I want you to know we were sabotaged. Someone interfered with the antibody samples.

"The virus wants to take over its host. It will continue to spread until every form of life has been assimilated. I have to stop this. I need to. I left this message just in case someone ever finds it. The location to my whereabouts is on the flash drive. Find me.

"We want survivors. We have to stick together if we hope to—"

Kshhhhh!!!

The video cut and the screen went back to the location flashing.

I saw where it was. It was a location a couple kilometers west of New Sunset City.

There was a rainforest there. The location pointed to east of the rainforest. It seemed like there was some sort of base there.

"She said she's working on a cure. She can help me. Yeesss! She can cure me. I just need to go there."

I pulled the flash drive out and put it in my pocket.

I immediately started to run back. It was getting dark. I needed to go back to the manhole without being seen.

I looked back at the computer. It was powered by a solar generator whose panels were mounted above the building.

I pulled out the computer.

Went outside and powered it on, placing the solar generator below the sun.

It powered on. I scrolled through various folders until I found what I was looking for. A music folder.

The old janitor found using the new computers hard for him, so he always used the old one. For this reason, we kept it in the data room and didn't throw it away. I'm thankful for that. In the end, it proved most useful and durable.

I played a song. I had brought speakers with me as well.

The song played at full volume. I felt the ground tremble. The sanguis were coming. I ran to a building and waited.

They all swarmed around the computer, drawn by the sound of singing. I took this opportunity to run. I ran as fast as I could.

The manhole was there. I pulled it open and went in.

I remembered the directions Isaac took. I ran back until... I was back at the shelter.

"No motherfucking hell!"

It was Marshal. He was installing a machine gun up above the shelter home.

I was bloody. My whole uniform covered with blood.

Marshal screamed for Benson. He came rushing.

He walked over to me, inspected me, and saw all the blood.

"You're bleeding?" he asked.

"Not mine, sir," I said with a smile, as I held two pistols, one in each hand.

Benson hugged me. "I'm glad you're alive, kid."

Marshal descended quickly and gave me a pat on the shoulders.

Isaac came too.

We ended up holding a small party—not just for my return, but for the success we just had. These guns would make a great difference for the safety of the shelter.

Our shelter was closest to the city. If the sanguis ever attacked, at least we now had a way to defend ourselves.

They laughed and drank. I smiled when I needed to. But all I could think about was the taste of that sanguis's blood in my mouth.

And how I wanted more.

Chapter 10We formed parties of two and departed for New Sunset City. The coverage for the mission included the outer parts of the city—from the water and sewage pipelines, stretching all the way to Manstand Bridge.New Sunset City was an island, with only four bridges leading out of it. The colony shelters were located just west of the city, still inside the island but away from the buildings.Old warehouses, factories, and schools that were meant to be demolished for the extension of the city outwards ended up being our shelters. The same places we deemed abandoned and useless were now a safe haven.Margery and I were assigned to search through Bedrock Street. It was a scarcely populated neighborhood back then, hence it had very little sanguis activity. We started off around seven in the morning. At first, the walk there was awkward. Neither of us spoke to the other. Whenever we talked, it was always the three of us—and now, it kind of felt weird just walking the two of us.I wanted

Chapter 9I found myself standing at the top of the factory building, staring at the city. My home—the place I grew up in.All my life, that's all I knew. I was born and worked there. Now all of it was in chaos. Death lingered in every corner, and in some way, it was partially my fault.I thought to myself: if I told Benson and the others what caused the apocalypse—that I was one of the scientists who started it all—how would they react? If I told them I was a monster myself, barely managing to keep myself restrained, to keep this thing inside me restrained—how would they react? It was all the more reason why I couldn't tell them anything.I know it's wrong, but I'll have to keep lying to them. The base Doctor Elana said she was at was west of Sunset City, deep inside a rainforest. It was dangerous, but I had to go.The journey would take me days at most, on foot. I wondered when it was best to leave."Wilton!"The sudden shout of my name startled me. It was Isaac."Yo! • Chapter 6 : An Escape Plan

Hours passed. The sanguis didn't give any signs of slowing down. They tore through building after building in search of us."If we sit idle, they will find us eventually. We have to do something," Marshal spoke. He was right. It was only a matter of time before they found us.Benson seemed lost in thought."We could use the same diversion plan as before," Marshal said."It won't work. There are too many of them, and they're scattered in all directions. You'd get killed before you could even create enough distance to throw the grenade," Benson replied."Well, do you have any better ideas?"I was also thinking of a way to escape.I stared out the window. The building where we conducted the experiment was just up ahead—not more than a kilometer away. If I wanted to find Doctor Elana, the lab was the best place to start.I could feel my arm getting worse. Maybe it was the excitement. Maybe it was reacting to the other sanguis. "The tunnels are just a few meters away."Isaac said, leading us to their location. We were four in total. We entered the tunnels and began following Isaac into the city. The tunnels were dark, and the water in there reached almost to our knees. We had to use torchlights to see where we were going. The smell in there was bad, but it never bothered me much. Maybe it was the sanguis inside me?"Argh. It fucking smells in here!"The voice belonged to Marshal. A former policeman. He was the biggest among us, with a red bandana on his head and a weird mustache."Quiet down. The sanguis may not be able to see us under here, but that doesn't mean they won't hear us," Benson said."We're here." Isaac said, staring above at a manhole sealed with a heavy metal lid."You sure?" Benson asked Isaac, strapping his torch back into his belt."Yes. Once we go up, the gun shop is just about 50 meters away."Benson turned around to face us. "Okay, listen up. We climb up into the city, and without making
