A slow silence followed from Tony’s side before he finally laughed under his breath. “We’ll see about that.”

By evening, the tension between them remained unresolved.

Yet despite everything, Daniella still attended the prestigious business banquet Tony invited her to.

And Fred still accompanied her, not because either of them wanted peace, but because appearances mattered.

The grand ballroom overflowed with Lagos elites, politicians, investors, and media personalities dressed in luxury; crystal chandeliers glowed overhead while live classical music drifted through the air.

Every conversation carried ambition, power, and status, exactly the kind of environment where Tony thrived naturally.

The moment he saw Daniella enter beside Fred, his charming smile widened. “There’s my favorite CEO.”

He kissed Daniella lightly on the cheek to spite Fred, before finally acknowledging him. “Fred.”

“Tony.”

The atmosphere tightened instantly.

Tony looked effortlessly polished tonight in a navy tailored tuxedo, while Fred wore simple black. Under normal circumstances, Fred’s quiet elegance would have stood out.

But Tony deliberately commanded attention, which was his talent, making other men disappear beside him.

Tony handed Daniella a champagne personally. “You look stunning tonight.”

Daniella smiled politely. “Thank you.”

Fred noticed how easily she relaxed around Tony now, how naturally they flowed together socially; meanwhile, he increasingly felt like an outsider in his own marriage.

A group of investors soon gathered around Tony. The man handled attention like breathing.

“Tony was just telling us about his expansion plans in Dubai,” one businessman said excitedly.

Another laughed. “The man never slows down.”

Tony smiled modestly before glancing toward Fred. “What about you, Fred? Still enjoying the quiet life?

The question sounded harmless, but the undertone wasn’t.

Fred remained calm. “I prefer simplicity.”

Tony chuckled lightly. “That explains a lot.”

A few people around them laughed quietly. Daniella stiffened slightly.

Tony continued smoothly. “I’m honestly jealous sometimes, no pressure, no major responsibilities, just you and your wife taking care of you, must be relaxing.”

More soft laughter spread around the group. Fred’s expression never changed.

But Chris, standing nearby, already looked ready to break someone’s jaw.

Tony swirled his drink casually. “Meanwhile, Daniella here practically carries an empire on her back.”

The insult landed clearly this time, implying Fred contributed nothing, that he simply lived comfortably through his wife’s success.

Several guests exchanged awkward looks. Others smirked openly.

Fred could feel the humiliation spreading through the room like poison. Yet strangely, the mockery itself did not hurt most.

What hurt was Daniella’s silence.

She said nothing, she did nothing. She simply stood there, and in that moment, Fred realized something terrifying: his wife no longer instinctively protected him.

Tony leaned back with fake amusement. “Actually, what exactly do you do these days, Fred?”

Chris stepped forward immediately. “Careful.”

Tony raised an eyebrow innocently. “What? I’m just making conversation."

Fred calmly placed a hand on Chris’ arm, silently stopping him.

Then he answered himself. “I work privately.”

Tony smiled faintly. “Right. Of course.”

The dismissal drew more quiet laughter.

Fred felt every single second of it, not because strangers underestimated him, but because Daniella looked uncomfortable instead of angry, as though she herself no longer knew how to defend him.

Across the ballroom, an older businessman suddenly froze mid-conversation, his eyes locked onto Fred.

The man’s face immediately lost color. “No way…” he whispered.

The businessman stared harder, and recognition slowly turned into panic; his assistant noticed immediately. “Sir?”

But the older man barely heard him, because he knew that face; he knew it far too well.

Years ago, one silent decision from Fred Morgan had destroyed a global competitor overnight.

The financial world called him many things privately: the Ghost Investor, the Shadow King, the Invisible Hand, but very few people had actually seen him in person.

The businessman swallowed hard before instinctively lowering his gaze in respect.

Tony noticed the reaction instantly. Interesting, very interesting. Why would a billionaire executive look terrified of someone like Fred?

Tony’s eyes narrowed slightly. Something wasn’t adding up.

Meanwhile, Daniella finally pulled Fred aside near the balcony. “You could at least try to socialize,” she whispered sharply, "You never can tell someone could get you a contract."

Fred stared at her quietly. “Is that really the problem here?”

“You’re making things awkward.”

“I’m making things awkward?”

Frustration finally slipped into his voice.

Daniella crossed her arms defensively. “You always shut down emotionally whenever something bothers you.”

Fred laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.

“Do you know what’s ironic?”

“What?”

“You think silence means I feel nothing.”

His gaze locked onto hers. “When in reality… It’s the only reason I haven’t broken completely.”

The words hit her harder than expected. Before she could respond, Tony approached again smoothly. “There you two are.”

Daniella stepped back instinctively.

Tony smiled. “Relax. I’m stealing her for one dance, not a lifetime.”

Fred looked at Daniella. Waiting and hoping she would refuse.

Instead, she hesitated. Again.

That hesitation alone felt humiliating. “I’ll only be gone for a minute,” she said softly.

Fred stepped aside immediately. “Of course.”

The dance floor lights dimmed as Tony guided Daniella into the crowd.

Fred remained near the balcony alone, watching them, watching how naturally Tony touched her, how easily Daniella smiled around him.

And little by little, the loneliness inside him became unbearable.

Chris approached moments later, holding whiskey. “You need to stop this.”

Fred didn’t look away from the dance floor. “Stop what?

“Destroying yourself for someone who doesn’t see your worth.”

Fred remained silent.

Because the worst part was that Daniella used to see it once, he did not know when that changed, or if he could ever get it back.

Later that night, after the banquet finally ended, Fred stepped into a quiet hallway searching for fresh air.

Then he heard Daniella’s voice nearby. “…maybe Tony understands me better.”

Fred froze instantly.

Tina answered softly, “You can’t keep denying what you feel.”

Daniella sounded conflicted now. “I don’t know what I feel anymore.”

Fred stood motionless in the shadows, every word landed like a blade twisting deeper into his chest.

Tina lowered her voice carefully. “When was the last time Fred made you feel alive?”

Silence followed.

And that silence told Fred everything, his grip tightened slowly at his side, then, without making a sound, Fred turned around and walked away before Daniella could see him. Alone.

“I can explain,” Daniella said quickly, panic flooding her voice as she stepped away from Tony. “It’s not what you think. Tony accidentally spilled wine on me, and he was only trying to help clean it off.”Fred stood frozen near the doorway. His eyes moved from Tony’s hand still resting too close to Daniella’s waist, down to the dark wine stain spread across her dress. The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.“Fred, please say something.”But he didn’t, his jaw tightened, and disappointment flashed across his face before he turned around and walked out without another word.“Fred!” Daniella rushed after him, her heels clicking loudly against the floor. “Wait, please!”Behind her, Tony leaned casually against the mirror. His attention remained fixed on her.Not because she looked beautiful. Daniella had always been beautiful. It was the effort that unsettled him.The care, the nervousness, the anticipation in her eyes, she had not dressed up for him like this in years. “You’ve changed your mind three times already,” Fred said calmly.Daniella glanced at him through the mirror. “Does this one look too formal?”Fred lowered the tablet slowly. “You look amazing.”T
