The Bai Tower, a steel and glass monolith that towered over the city like a throne made for gods, pierced the night sky. While the streets below continued to hum with life and lights, its upper floors were shrouded in a constant shadow.

There was silence inside. Neon's glow was muted by heavy curtains. The family that ruled from the shadows sat around a long table of polished obsidian that stretched across the room.

The Bai household.

The clan patriarch, Bai Longwei, drummed his fingers on the chair's armrest at the head. Like a ticking clock, every blow reverberated. He looked around at the assembled bloodline sons, uncles, and daughters. Nobody was brave enough to speak first.

Until the silence was broken by a voice.

With a thin and angular face, Bai Ren whispered, "News from the forest." On the table, he set a sealed scroll. "The boy lived."

The room echoed with a murmur.
