The whispers didn’t stop after the cafeteria incident. If anything, they grew sharper, carrying venom in Jason’s absence.

He hadn’t been seen all morning. Adrian sat in class with Emma two rows behind him, unease coiling in his gut. The system’s warning echoed in his mind:

[Quest Alert: Jason Reed is preparing a major retaliation. Anticipate sabotage]

When the lunch bell rang, Adrian felt the weight of eyes on him. Students parted as he walked into the hallway.

That’s when Principal Hargrove appeared, face stern. “Adrian Cole,” the principal’s voice was like a gavel. “My office. Now.”

Gasps followed him. Emma’s worried glance burned into his back. The principal’s office was silent except for the ticking clock.

Jason was already there, standing tall with mock innocence plastered on his face.

Principal Hargrove’s jaw tightened. “Adrian, do you deny placing this in my mailbox this morning?”

He slammed a clear evidence bag onto the desk. Inside was a small plastic pouch filled with white powder.

Adrian’s heart nearly stopped. Jason crossed his arms, smug. “I saw him slip it in, sir. I couldn't believe it myself.”

Adrian’s pulse thundered. If this stuck, he was finished. Expelled. Stained for life. The system chimed.

[Critical Task: Expose Jason’s frame-up. Reward: +6 Reputation, +6 Wisdom, Special Skill Unlock. Failure: Permanent Expulsion]

Adrian forced his breathing to steady. His new Wisdom buff pulsed, sharpening his thoughts. He studied Jason, then the bag, then the principal.

“Sir,” Adrian said firmly, “you’ve known me for three years. Do I look like someone who would bring drugs into school?”

Jason cut in smoothly. “Desperate people do desperate things. Everyone knows he’s been trying to climb socially. Wouldn’t surprise me if he thought this was the way.”

Adrian’s fists itched to smash Jason’s smirk, but he kept calm. “If I may…” His eyes flicked to the bag. “That pouch is sealed. No fingerprints yet, right?”

Principal Hargrove frowned. “Correct. I was about to call the police.”

“Then let’s check for prints. Mine won’t be there. Jason’s will.”

Jason stiffened. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?” Adrian pressed, his voice gaining strength. “He’s the one who claimed to ‘see me’ put it in. Funny how he just happened to know exactly where it was. Almost like he planted it himself.”

The principal’s gaze darkened. “Jason. Where were you this morning at 7:30?”

Jason faltered. “I… I was.”

Adrian pounced. “Not in the homeroom. I saw your seat empty. Ask anyone.”

The principal’s frown deepened. “That’s true. You were late, Jason.”

Jason’s face flushed red. “He’s lying! You can’t prove, ”

Adrian smirked. “Check the security cameras in the staff hallway. They’ll show who put the pouch in the mailbox.”

Silence. Jason’s mask cracked, fury twisting his features. The system chimed.

[Skill Unlocked: Logic Trap. Active. Enables the user to corner opponents in arguments by chaining evidence and authority]

Principal Hargrove’s voice was like steel. “Jason, step outside. Now.”

Jason exploded. “This is bullsh”

“NOW!”

The slam of the door echoed like thunder. Adrian let out a shaky breath. The principal studied him, then the pouch, then finally nodded. “You’re free to go. But Adrian.” His eyes softened slightly. “Be careful. Someone clearly wants to destroy you.”

Adrian nodded. “I know who it is.”

Back in the hallway, whispers flew again, but this time Adrian walked straighter. Emma rushed up, gripping his arm. “What happened?”

Adrian allowed himself a thin smile. “Jason’s trap backfired. Hard.”

Emma’s relief was palpable. “I swear, he won’t stop until.”

“He’s finished,” Adrian cut in, voice low, dangerous. “He just doesn’t know it yet.”

The system chimed once more.

[Critical Task Complete. Reward: +6 Wisdom, +6 Reputation]

[Reputation: 87. Wisdom Level Up: Persuasion unlocked. Your words now influence authority figures more strongly]

But even as victory settled in his chest, Adrian’s mind replayed the look in Jason’s eyes before he was dragged out. It wasn’t anger anymore. It was hate. Cold. Ruthless.

Jason wouldn’t stop until one of them was broken, and Adrian was done being the one on the floor.

The afternoon sun dipped low, painting the streets in gold. Adrian walked home alone, backpack heavy against his sore shoulders. The day had been quiet, too quiet.

Emma had begged him to let her walk with him, but he refused. After the principal’s office,

Jason had vanished from sight. That alone was enough to put Adrian on edge. The system’s warning pulsed faintly.

[Threat Detected: Ambush probability, High]

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He quickened his pace, eyes scanning the sidewalks. The street was empty, but the silence was unnatural.

A voice slithered from the shadows. “Thought you’d won, Worm?”

Jason stepped out from the alley, flanked by four of his biggest lackeys. His swollen nose and bruised jaw only fueled the hate in his glare.

Adrian dropped his bag slowly, muscles tense. “You never learn, do you?”

Jason’s smirk was feral. “Oh, I learned that school's too soft. Out here, there’s no teachers. No cameras. Just me, you, and the pavement.”

The lackeys fanned out, boxing Adrian in. Adrian’s heart pounded. The odds were worse than ever. Still, he forced a smirk. “Four against one? That’s bravery?”

Jason’s grin widened. “I don’t need bravery. I need blood.”

He lunged first. Adrian dodged, his Counter skill activating. His fist clipped Jason’s jaw, sending him stumbling back.

But before Adrian could follow up, a lackey’s punch slammed into his ribs. Another grabbed his arm.

Pain flared. Adrian gritted his teeth, twisting free, but a kick swept his legs out from under him.

He hit the pavement hard, breath exploding from his lungs. Jason’s shadow loomed over him. “Get up, Worm.”

Adrian staggered to his feet, vision swimming. His chest heaved. Every instinct screamed at him to run, but the system pulsed louder.

[Emergency Buff Activated: Survival Instinct. Strength +3, Reflex +2. Duration: 5 minutes]

Adrian’s body surged with raw energy. He ducked under a swing, driving his elbow into a lackey’s gut.

The boy collapsed, gasping. Adrian pivoted, landing a clean hook on another’s temple. Jason snarled. “Don’t just stand there! Finish him!”

The remaining two lackeys hesitated. Adrian’s eyes burned with defiance, his movements sharper now, faster.

He cracked one across the face with a savage right hook. Blood sprayed. The boy went down. Adrian turned to the last one. “Still think he’s worth following?”

The boy’s eyes flicked between Jason and Adrian. Then, without a word, he bolted down the street.

Gasps and laughter echoed faintly from passersby who had started watching from a distance. Jason’s face twisted. “Cowards. All of you!”

Adrian wiped blood from his lip, smirking. “Looks like you’re out of dogs.”

Jason’s roar shattered the street. He charged, tackling Adrian to the ground. Fists flew, slamming into Adrian’s face, his chest.

Pain exploded. Adrian struggled, vision blurring. The system chimed.

[Critical Upgrade Unlocked: Iron Will. Passive. Increases resistance to physical damage and boosts recovery during combat]

Adrian’s vision sharpened. He caught Jason’s fist mid-swing, muscles surging with new strength. Jason’s eyes widened. “What?”

Adrian slammed his forehead into Jason’s nose. A sickening crack echoed. Jason howled, stumbling back, blood pouring.

Adrian rose slowly, fists clenched, chest heaving. His eyes locked on Jason’s. “You’re done.”

The crowd that had gathered gasped as Jason staggered, his bravado shattered.

But instead of retreating, Jason grinned through the blood. “You think this ends here, Worm? You’ve got no idea what’s coming.”

Before Adrian could respond, Jason spat blood at the pavement, turned, and disappeared into the night, clutching his ruined face. The system’s chime rang in Adrian’s mind.

[Emergency Buff Complete. Iron Will permanently added. Reputation +8]

Adrian wiped blood from his brow, breathing hard. He looked around at the small crowd of students and locals who had witnessed it.

Their eyes weren’t mocking. They were wide, respectful. Emma’s voice rang out as she pushed through the crowd, breathless. “Adrian!” She froze when she saw the blood, panic flashing across her face.

Adrian gave her a faint, exhausted smile. “I’m fine.”

The system chimed again.

[Quest Update: Admiration Gained. Current peers: 4 (Emma, student body, Mrs. Carter, bystanders). Goal: 5]

But deep down, Adrian knew. Jason wasn’t beaten. Not yet. The hate in his eyes promised something darker. Something beyond fists and lies, and the next strike… would be far worse.
