The chain sparked alive. The cathedral filled with stormlight as Kael charged, straight into Alaric’s fire.
Lightning coiled around Kael’s arms as he faced Alaric in the center of the ruined nave. “You destroyed everything that stood for faith,” Alaric said, his voice echoing through the smoke.
“Faith?” Kael spat. “You used faith to bury people alive.”
Alaric’s expression was calm, almost tender. “I buried sin. The weak exist to feed the strong. That is divine order.”
Kael’s chain lit up in fury. “Then I’ll break your order!”
They collided, lightning met holy fire with a scream that split the ceiling. The shockwave threw Mira and Corvin behind shattered pews.
Sparks seared the air. Every strike rattled the walls, every blow lighting Kael’s scars until he glowed like a storm given flesh.
Alaric deflected a blow and shoved him back. “You’re a child playing god.”
Kael’s breath came hard. “And you’re a god who forgot he was human.”
Their weapons clashed again. Alaric’s blade carved through a column; Kael’s chain lashed around it, pulling the structure down in a rain of stone. Mira screamed, “Kael, stop! The roof.”
Too late. The ceiling cracked. Sunlight cut through the smoke like a blade as the bell tower began to crumble.
Kael grabbed Mira and rolled aside as debris crashed down, dust choking the air. Alaric emerged through the haze, his armor glowing white, eyes burning cold. “This world needs judgment,” he said. “But you… you’re chaos.”
Kael stood, blood dripping from his lip. “Maybe chaos is the only thing pure left.”
Alaric raised his sword. “Then let me purify you.”
The next strike wasn’t steel, it was faith itself. Holy symbols erupted from the floor, circling Kael in fire. His body convulsed, the System inside him shrieking.
[Warning: Host Integrity Failing.]
[Override Initiated.]Kael fell to his knees, lightning spilling from his wounds. Mira tried to run to him, but the barrier burned her hands. “Kael!”
Inside the ring of fire, Kael heard two voices, one cold, one desperate. Alaric: “Surrender the System.”
The System: “Consume him.”
Kael gritted his teeth, pain flooding his veins. “Get… out… of me!”
Lightning exploded outward. The ground cracked. Alaric staggered back as the System’s voice turned sharp and metallic: [Judgment Sync: 90%. Host awakening Stage Two.]
Kael’s chains dissolved into light. For a heartbeat, the storm within him stood still, then it struck. He vanished in a blur, reappearing behind Alaric, fist blazing with lightning.
“Justice.” The punch landed like thunder. “For the forgotten!”
The blast hurled Alaric through the altar, shattering marble. His armor smoked, but he laughed, low and dangerous. “You think pain makes you righteous?” he said, rising slowly. “I felt the same once. The System offered me the world… until it devoured my soul.”
Kael froze. “You… had the System?”
Alaric’s eyes met his, haunted. “I was the first Judge. The gods called me their instrument. I called myself savior. Then I realized salvation was just another chain.”
Mira whispered, horrified, “He’s telling the truth.”
Kael’s grip trembled. “Then why serve it?”
“Because you can’t kill what you are,” Alaric said quietly. “And neither can I.”
Kael’s rage faltered for just a breath, and that was all Alaric needed. The Inquisitor’s blade flared.
Holy energy shot forward, impaling Kael through the chest. The sound was sickening, a crack of light and flesh.
Mira screamed. Corvin tried to reach him but was thrown back by the shockwave. Kael staggered, eyes wide, lightning leaking from the wound.
[Critical damage detected. Recommend absorption of nearest power source.]
He coughed blood. “No… not again.”
The System whispered seductively: [Consume. Survive. Ascend.]
He could feel Alaric’s life blazing before him, a fire he could steal. Mira’s voice broke through the storm. “Kael, don’t! That’s what it wants!”
Kael’s heart pounded. He saw his father’s face, the mine, the brand, the world that left him broken. “If I don’t take it, I die,” he said hoarsely.
“Then die free!” she shouted.
The words struck him harder than any sword. Kael gritted his teeth, pushed the voice away, and ripped himself off the blade.
Lightning flared crimson from the wound, sealing it half-shut. He stood trembling but alive. Alaric’s eyes widened slightly. “You resisted it.”
Kael’s voice was raw. “I’m not your reflection.”
He raised his hand. Lightning carved symbols into the air, the same ones that branded him years ago. [Judgment Reversal: Execute.]
The runes ignited, exploding beneath Alaric’s feet. The blast hurled him through the broken wall, out into the open sky.
Kael collapsed to his knees, breathing ragged. The System hissed in his skull like a wounded beast: [You defied protocol.]
“Then erase me,” he whispered. “If you can.”
Silence. Then, softly: [New directive: Observe anomaly.]
The voice faded. Mira rushed to his side, catching him before he fell. “You insane, stubborn idiot.”
Kael gave a weak smile. “You’re welcome.”
She laughed through tears. “Don’t make me save you again.”
Corvin limped over, half covered in soot. “The soldiers are falling back. Whatever you did scared even their god.”
Kael looked toward the hole where Alaric had fallen. The city stretched below, flames painting the dawn red. “He’s not dead,” Kael said quietly.
Corvin snorted. “Next time, make sure he is.”
Mira glanced toward the horizon. “We can’t stay. The Church will regroup.”
Kael pushed himself up. “Then we move north, to the Baron.”
Corvin frowned. “After that fight? You’ll collapse before you reach the gate.”
Kael’s eyes hardened. “If I stop now, all this was for nothing.”
Mira met his gaze, saw the fire there, and nodded. “Then I’m with you.”
Corvin sighed. “And I’m apparently cursed.”
They turned toward the broken doorway. Outside, rain began to fall again, hissing against the flames.
As Kael stepped into the storm, the System whispered one last time: [Next Judgment Prepared: Baron of Ashreach – Sin Level 312.]
Kael closed his eyes, rain running down his face like tears. “Then the storm continues,” he murmured.
He didn’t see the figure watching from the distant spire, a silhouette of silver armor, one hand pressed to a bleeding wound, eyes burning brighter than fire.
“Rise higher, Kael Thorn,” Alaric whispered. “So I can crush you myself.”

Chapter Eight: Chains of Heaven
The rain turned silver under the dawn. Kael stood on the cliff’s edge, wind whipping his cloak as the lightning within him flickered gold and blue. Behind him, a voice he thought he’d silenced forever rose through the mist. “Did you really think death would free you from me, Kael Thorn?”Alaric’s tone was soft, almost kind, and that made it worse. Kael turned slowly. The High Inquisitor emerged from the shadows, his once-silver armor now scorched black and cracked with light. His eyes burned brighter than fire. “Still breathing?” Kael said, voice low. “I should’ve struck harder.”Alaric smiled faintly. “You did. I simply refused to die.”Mira and Corvin appeared behind Kael, exhausted, soaked, but ready. Mira’s hand trembled on her dagger. “He survived that?”Corvin muttered, “He’s like a cockroach blessed by gods.”Alaric ignored them, gaze locked on Kael. “You’ve awakened the First Judge’s soul. Do you even understand what that means?”Kael’s jaw tightened. “It means she wanted ou
Chapter Seven: The Ghost of the First Judge
The night after the Baron’s fall was too quiet. Kael sat alone by the window of an abandoned watchtower, lightning flickering faintly across his fingertips. Outside, the city smoldered under distant rain. Mira paced behind him, restless. Corvin cleaned his dagger by the fire, his gold mask lying beside him. “You’ve been staring at nothing for an hour,” Mira said finally.“Not nothing,” Kael murmured. “I can still hear her.”“The voice from the System?”“Yes.”His eyes were distant, almost haunted. “She keeps whispering the same word, ‘remember.’ But every time I try, it hurts.”Corvin’s tone was dry. “Maybe don’t take advice from the ghost living in your skull.”Kael’s glare cut to him. “You think I asked for this?”Corvin lifted his hands. “Relax. Just saying, half the city already calls you the storm of Rhaegor. Maybe don’t add ‘mad prophet’ to the list.”Mira shot Corvin a warning look. “He’s trying to focus. You could try not being a rat for once.”Corvin smirked. “A charming hea
Chapter Six: The Baron’s Sin
The city stank of smoke and rot; banners of the Church burned on every street corner. “He’s close,” Kael said quietly.“You can feel him?” Corvin asked.“The System can,” Kael replied. “It’s like the air grows heavier the nearer I get.”Mira kept pace beside him, cloak soaked through. “The Baron’s estate is built on the ashes of the old mines. If the System guided you here, it’s not coincidence.”Kael’s eyes flickered with blue light. “It’s retribution.”They turned a corner, and froze. Ahead, the road to Ashreach was blocked by rows of armored soldiers. Their captain shouted above the rain. “By order of the Baron, all entrances to the district are sealed. Trespassers will be executed.”Corvin exhaled. “Of course. A polite welcome.”Kael’s chain slid from his sleeve, glinting faintly in the lightning. “Then we make our own entrance.”Mira caught his arm. “Wait. Look.”Through the sheets of rain, a cart approached the barricade, driven by ragged workers, miners, their faces hollow. A

Kael’s vision blurred in the smoke as heat slammed into him like a hammer. Mira’s voice cut through the chaos. “Kael! Mira didn’t hesitate, she threw a handful of powder into the air. The spark flared green, blinding. The men cried out, clutching their eyes. Kael blinked through the smoke. “What was that?”“Sleeping ash,” she said, catching her breath. “Hurts like hell if you inhale it. Works every time.”He stared at her, trying to catch up. “Who are you?” “A healer,” she replied, voice tight. “And apparently your babysitter now.”Kael’s temper flared. “I don’t need saving.”“You almost died in there.”“I’ve died before,” he snapped. She stopped, turned on him. “Then stop acting like it’s a badge of
