Brian tried to run away from him, but Lucas tripped him. Brian fell face flat, nearly hitting the legs of the center table.
“Brian,” Jasmine screamed and rushed towards him. “I've had enough of this.” Dean stepped forward. Lucas lashed the whip in the air, missing his father by an inch as he got closer. Dean flinched back. He looked surprised for a moment before enraged. “What’s gotten into you?” “What? Why not have a taste of what you all do to me every single time Brian comes up with his lies,” yelled Brian. “Lucas, I don't understand why you're always doing this to me,” Brian said, shedding tears as he stood up. Lucas couldn't tell if he was crying out of pain or if it was just part of his manipulative acting. “All I'm trying to do is get along with you. Why do you hate me so much?” Jasmine held Brian's shoulders. “Oh, it's alright, dear.” Brian shook his head. “No, it's not. Why does he hate me so much? Does he feel like I stole his place in this family? But I'm just an adopted child. He'll always have your blood in his veins. I can't replace him.” “No, no. Don't say that about yourself, okay? You're my son, not an outsider. Who cares if we are not your biological parents? You'll always be our son. Don't allow Lucas to let you feel this way.” Dean added. “If it makes you feel better, I’d rather have you than him as my son. I’d never want this disgrace as a son.” Lucas just chuckled. Perhaps, before his rebirth, their words might have broken him beyond repair, but at this point, he could not care less. “I didn't beat you hard enough if you still have the audacity to keep up that act,” he said. Dean stomped his feet on the ground. “You've gone too far, Lucas. Breaking Brian's watch, disrespecting your parents, bullying Brian…stop this nonsense and apologize this instant.” “For what? Standing up for myself?” “I won't repeat myself.” “I'm never apologizing.” “Then leave this house. I'm not tolerating this behavior.” Brian had a victorious smirk on his face, which he quickly wiped off before anyone could notice. Then, he stepped forward and gently held Dean's left shoulder. “Dad, you don't have to send him out. If anyone should leave, it's me. I'm the problem.” “You did nothing wrong, my dear. Stop defending him,” Jasmine said. She glared at Lucas. “See what you are causing Brian to feel. You should be ashamed of yourself.” Lucas rolled his eyes. “Yeah, Brian puts on some act, and all of you become brain-dead. Like I said before, big fools.” “You still have the guts to talk back? Forget about the apology. Just leave this place,” Dean yelled. “Gladly. I'm cutting all ties with this family. Living under a bridge is better than this hell called home.” Jasmine's face contorted into fury. “You ungrateful child. After everything we've done for you, this is how you repay us?” Lucas said, “You mean the abuse and neglect I suffered from you all? Then yes. This is how I'm repaying you. You are a shame to parenthood.” Dan and Jasmine's faces turned red with rage. Brian stepped forward. “Don't say that about mom and dad. They're the best—” “Oh, would you shut it before I break your teeth in pieces?” Lucas interrupted. “Stop acting like you aren't happy I'm leaving. Isn't this what you wanted all this time?” “N-no. Why would you assume that? We're brothers.” “You are not my brother and will never be my brother. Just the very thought of it irritates me," Lucas said. The memory of Brian stabbing him flashed through his mind. He took a step towards Brian, his eyes flashing with murderous intent. “I’ll make sure you pay for all the trouble and pain you caused me. I promise you.” Brian's words got caught in his throat. Something about Brian's gaze made his heart race in fear, as if he would truly get back at him at that point. The atmosphere became tense all of a sudden. “Don't you dare threaten him,” Dean said, his left eye twitching in anger. “Leave my house and never come back, you ingrate.” Lucas gave them a cold smile. “Enjoy the good days you have left, Mr and Mrs Vale.” Lucas left the mansion. Only when Lucas left did Brian feel the fear leave him. He heaved a sigh of relief, then frowned. Since when was he scared of Lucas? “The nerve of that boy. Argh," Dean bellowed in anger. Jasmine took a deep breath and then said. “Calm down, dear. I'm not sure what has gotten into him today, but he will come back to his senses when he realizes he cannot survive without us. He has a test tomorrow, doesn't he? Before midnight, he should be back.” “Oh, he's in big trouble when he comes back.” Brian sniffled. “I'm sorry. This is all my fault.” “Ah, you're just too good for this world. We're not blaming you. Don't worry. We'll make him pay for this when he returns. Let's get those whip wounds treated, okay?” “I'll get another watch for you. You've done well for us.” Brian beamed with smiles, happy that things were going the way he planned. **” After Lucas left the mansion, he let out a huge breath. He should have done this in his previous life. For years, he desperately chased his parents' approval, enduring Brian's lies and their punishment because he kept believing things would eventually change. Now, he had no reason to care. His parents could keep their perfect son. Their betrayal still replayed in his mind, making him clench his fist. The moment Brian stabbed him. The moment his parents held him down. The cold snow beneath his body. The zombies tearing him apart. He would never forget any of it. His parents deserved whatever would come for them. Without him helping them this time, Lucas would love to see how they'd survive the apocalypse. And as for Brian, he wouldn't get away with all he had done. The blue screen appeared before his eyes at that moment. Lucas froze in his steps as the robotic voice spoke. 8. Doomsday begins
The wind continued to rage, slowly intensifying into a windstorm. People ran about, trying to find somewhere safe as various objects flew into the air. Oliver turned on the wipers to get rid of the fog on his windshield. He shivered. “Is it just me or is it getting colder?” “Let's just get to…watch out.” Oliver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. His car struck the vehicle in front of them, which had stopped abruptly. “What the—” Oliver was still speaking when another car slammed into them from behind, sending their vehicle lurching forward. They quickly left the car. The cold hit Lucas like a wave, making him shudder. There was heavy traffic on the road. Drivers and passengers fled their vehicles for safety. Dusts and mist mixed in the air. The wind bent the trees by the side of the road almost to the ground. Signboards fell to the ground. Papers and nylon flew through the air. Dark clouds covered the sky, and the mist and dust made it difficult to see what
7. Buying supplies
After considering his options, Lucas decided having his supplies delivered was the best. So early in the morning the next day, he searched for warehouses and stores he could order from. By eleven, the delivery trucks started arriving, starting with the food delivery. His experience from his past life taught him that high-calorie and easy-to-cook meals were the best options. So amongst the food packed into his storehouse were instant noodles, rice, beans, canned meat, canned stew, and other long-lasting food. He also bought fresh vegetables and fruits. Normally, these would spoil quickly without refrigeration, but time didn't pass in his Dimensional Storage Space. He could store them there when need be. Immediately after the food delivery left, the clothing arrived. He ordered a large quantity of snow jackets, thick pants, t-shirts, and boots. Warmth was just as important as food. The last truck came with his gallons of water. The mansion had its own water supply, but anything
6. The tour
After getting some documents from the office, William took him to the villa for a quick tour. Lucas studied the tall structure of the villa, and it's surrounding. In his past life, Houston Villa stood strong while most of the other buildings crumbled. It somehow fell into the hands of a group of thugs who never stopped bragging about its defenses to anyone who cared to listen. The gate and fence were made of reinforced steel and concrete respectively, and electric wires lined the top of the fence. Breaking in would be extremely difficult. This should offer him some protection from the zombies and thugs. After exploring the outside, they went inside. The entrance hallway led to the living room, their footsteps echoing as their shoes hit the marble floor. The living room spanned wide, equipped with soft cushioned couches, a large TV that nearly occupied the whole wall it was mounted on, a dinner table, a bar, a coffee table, and a fireplace. A double staircase flanked the fireplace

Lucas woke up the next day, feeling refreshed—no Vales screaming in his head to clean the house or make them breakfast. Just peace. After a quick breakfast of eggs and toast, Lucas took a taxi to the state lottery headquarters with his ticket. Oliver lent him some cash before leaving for college. Under normal circumstances, Lucas should have gone with him to college, but the quests were more important. College wouldn't matter in a few days. The journey to the headquarters took about an hour. The receptionist welcomed him warmly when he arrived and took him to the office. His ticket was verified, and the prize was confirmed. Lottery winnings weren't taxed in their country, so the total sum of man million dollars was sent to his bank account. Lucas frowned when he didn't see the other man that won the jackpot in his previous life. Didn't he win this time? Lucas was excited nonetheless. He didn't have to share the jackpot with anyone else. As he left, different financial managers
4. Next course of action
Lucas lay on the bed and let out a huge breath. He spotted a pile of clothes on a chair in a corner. Oliver must have cleaned his room in a haste when Lucas told him he was coming over. Oliver asked. “So…what happened? They finally chased you out?” Lucas nodded. Oliver sighed. “Lucas, listen to me this time. Don't go back. You can stay with me for as long—” “Yeah, I know. I'm not going back.” Oliver blinked in surprise. “Are you…are you serious?” “Why would I stay with them any longer? They clearly don't care about me." “That’s what I've been trying to tell you for years. Gosh, you finally got some brain cells.” If only he knew Lucas had to die and be reborn to get said brain cells. “You can stay here for as long as you need. We'll figure out something. Anything is better than staying with those snakes called family.” Lucas smiled. “Thank you.” Why didn't he leave that family long ago? Oliver was more family to him than they could ever be in their lifetime. He cherished th
3. The lucky numbers
Amid the drama in the Vales mansion, he had almost forgotten about the system. Although he wondered how he got it, he had to admit it was cool. It was like he was a robot or wearing one of those interface glasses. The screen was translucent, so he could see what was in front of him just fine. There were lots of interesting things about the quests, especially the rewards, but one thing deeply worried Lucas. ‘Four days and thirteen hours? Is that how much time I have left before the apocalypse begins?’ [Yes. The winter starts at this time.] Lucas shuddered. The apocalypse was really coming. He recalled when the winter started in his previous life. Scientists and weather experts claimed it was just a temporary change in the climate and no one should panic. But the winter never ended. Life eventually became difficult for normal citizens since no one prepared for the sudden weather change. But as if that wasn't enough, a zombie infection started spreading and plunged the world into
