CHAPTER 21: NO ONE TOUCHES MY PEOPLE
The director looked at Julian's hand in the air between them, and then he laughed. It was a soft, professional laugh, the kind that got used to making nobodies smaller."While it still works," he repeated, tasting the sentence like bad wine. "Cute. Do you know how many men have said something clever to me in this corridor? They all work here now, or they don't work at all."He did not let go of Aira's hand. He pulled it toward himself, gently, the way a man takes something he has already priced. "You're too pretty to waste on a minor role," he said, and his voice went warm and low, the voice that had closed doors and opened them for fifteen years. "One night. One night with me, and I can get you any part you want. Any part."Aira yanked her hand back so hard she staggered. "I came to audition," she said, and her voice shook with anger, not fear. "Not to sleep with anyone."The warmth left the director's face all at once, like a switch thrown. "Oh, please," he sneered. "You've probably
CHAPTER 20: FIRST TO ARRIVE, LAST TO LEAVE
Aira woke before her alarm, and by the time the alarm did ring, she had already been awake for an hour, running her lines in the mirror. She said the third line, hated it, erased it from her face, and said it again, slower. In the kitchen, Margaret pressed a paper bag into her hands—two rice balls and a boiled egg, the orphanage version of good luck. When Aira came down the stairs, Julian was in the kitchen, holding a cup of Margaret's too-sweet tea, reading nothing, just holding it."I'm coming with you," he said."You don't have to.""I know.""I can take the bus.""I know that too."They looked at each other for three seconds, and Aira lost, because she always lost them, and she hated that she was starting not to mind. "Fine," she said. "But if you slow me down, I'm leaving you."On the bus she insisted on the bus, and Julian did not argue, because the bus was hers she told him about the project. A famous director's comeback film, the first in six years. Half the big names in the c
CHAPTER 19: THE SHOW
Julian came home with the smell of rain still on his coat. The yard gravel was still wet, and the two men Garrick had left on watch greeted him with a nod—the way people greet someone they were ordered to protect but have come to like. The orphanage kitchen was still lit, and Aira sat at the table with a cup of tea that was no longer steaming. She had clearly been waiting for a while."Where were you?" she asked."Out for a bit.""A bit?" Aira stood, hands on her hips. "Julian, the streets near here were full of helicopters and armed police. I have never seen anything like it. People are saying a big shot came to inspect the East End." Her voice dropped, half envious. "A real big shot. The kind that makes a whole city hold its breath."Julian hung his coat on the back of a chair. "Probably a misunderstanding," he said. "Just ordinary people.""Ordinary people don't bring helicopters," Aira said."Maybe the helicopters are the ones being inspected.""Sometimes helicopters just like wat
CHAPTER 18 LEFT FOOT FIRST
The six cars did not stop like cars. They stopped like a wall being built. Headlights swept past Julian from both ends of the street, crossed, and locked him in a rectangle of white light and idling engines. Doors opened. Adrian Blackwood stepped out of the lead car, adjusting his cuffs, taking his time."Well," Adrian said, stopping three paces away. "Look what the rain forgot."Julian put his hands in his pockets. "You followed me.""I intercepted you," Adrian corrected. "There is a difference. Interception is what men with money do." His six bodyguards fanned out behind him, smiling the way paid men smile when the job is already half a joke. "Let me tell you why you are standing in my light tonight. You entered the villa with your left foot first, and that displeased me. So I am going to break both of your arms. For fun. Consider it a tuition fee for manners."His men laughed. It was an easy laugh. They had broken men before and been paid for it.Julian looked at Adrian the way a d
CHAPTER 17: BEAUTY IS ALSO A FORM OF POWER
"Treat him," Victoria said, stepping into the light. "This is your last chance, Julian."The courtyard was empty except for the five of them—Victoria, Karen, Tristan in his wheelchair, Adrian hovering near the fountain, and Julian at the edge of the lantern light. The string quartet had left their chairs. The lanterns swayed in the wind that followed the rain.Julian looked at his eldest sister for a long moment. Ten years, he thought. Ten years of signing nothing and fixing everything, and this was the shape of her gratitude: an order, delivered to his face like a subpoena. He sneered. It was a small sound, and it was the first time any of them had ever seen him sneer."No," he said.Victoria's eyes narrowed by one millimeter. "Excuse me?""You heard me." Julian put his hands in his pockets. "He attacked an orphanage. He planted evidence on me. He lied to your face every day since he arrived. And you want me to fix what his own lies did to his body. No. Let the lie treat him.""You w
Chapter 16 THE EMPTY HALL
The shout hung in the air like a struck bell. For three full seconds, nobody in the courtyard breathed. A doctor near the fountain lowered his phone. A professor stopped mid-whisper. Even the string quartet's bows went still on their strings. Then the old man in the gray coat lifted his phone higher, so the lantern light fell on the screen."Divine Healer 1 has replied," Sir Edmund Hale said. His voice was not loud, but it carried the way a judge does. "He says: the woman who calls herself my disciple was expelled from the school hours ago. She speaks without my name and without my leave."Karen's face went white under the powder. The smile stayed for one second too long, like a mask that had forgotten it was a mask. Then training took over. Inside her chest, something cold did arithmetic. The Master had cut her off hours ago. If this old man could reach the Master and she could not, then every second she denied it was a second the crowd counted against her. ‘Deny faster,’ 'said the c
