"Ding!" the system’s cheerful chime echoed inside Arman’s mind. "Deducting ten Karma Points. Initializing the Solar-Cosmic Generator."

"Wait, hold on," Arman said, squinting into the pitch blackness of the store. "How does a solar generator even work at night? Especially with this creepy red fog blocking out the sky?"

"The Solar-Cosmic Generator does not rely solely on direct sunlight, Host Arman," the system replied in its cool, mechanical tone. "It utilizes ambient cosmic radiation and background electromagnetic waves. Installation is now complete."

A low, deep vibration rattled the floorboards beneath their feet.

"Whoa, what is that?" Mr. Bambang yelled, scrambling backward and knocking over a plastic display of cheap, colorful umbrellas. "Is the ground shaking? Is there an earthquake now too?"

"No, no, it's fine, Mr. Bambang," Arman said, holding up a hand to calm him. "Just watch the lights."

The overhead fluorescent tubes did not snap back on with their usual harsh, buzzing white glare. Instead, a soft, warm golden light began to glow from the ceiling fixtures, illuminating the dusty, scattered aisles of Prima Mart.

"Oh, thank heavens," Mr. Bambang gasped, squinting up at the ceiling. "We have power. But Arman... how did you do that? The whole city is dark. I looked out my window before I ran, and the entire block was pitch black."

"I told you, it's a long story," Arman said, leaning his heavy steel crowbar against the checkout counter. "Just... take a deep breath."

"I can't!" Mr. Bambang suddenly wheezed, clutching his chest. "My chest... it feels like someone is squeezing it with a wrench, Arman. I can't get any air in!"

"Hey, hey! Calm down!" Arman rushed over, kneeling beside the older man. "Breathe with me. In... and out. Come on, Mr. Bambang, you're safe. Look at the door. See that faint golden glow? Nothing can get past that. You saw what happened to those dogs."

"I know, I know, but..." Mr. Bambang’s eyes rolled back slightly, his face turning a sickening shade of pale gray. "My wife, Arman. She went to the evening market down the street. She isn't home. What if those... those things got her? What if she’s..."

"Don't do that to yourself right now," Arman interrupted firmly, grabbing the man's shoulders. "We don't know anything yet. Right now, you need to stay alive. If you have a heart attack right here, I can't help you. I'm a store clerk, not a doctor."

"Water..." Mr. Bambang gasped, his lips dry and cracking. "Please... just a sip of water."

"Right. Water. Stay here," Arman said.

He scrambled to his feet and ran down Aisle 2, where the bottled drinks were kept. He grabbed a cold bottle of mineral water from the shelf.

"Wait, System," Arman muttered under his breath. "Do I need to scan this? Or pay for it? I don't want you deducting points for shoplifting from my own store."

"Inside your designated Safe Zone, all existing physical inventory is considered the property of the Host," the system explained. "No points will be deducted. Furthermore, utilizing your resources to aid a registered survivor will trigger a positive feedback loop."

"Good to know," Arman said.

He ran back to the front counter, twisting the plastic cap off the bottle as he went. He knelt back down and pressed the bottle into Mr. Bambang's shaking hands.

"Here. Drink this. But slowly, okay? Don't chug it all at once or you'll just throw it back up."

Mr. Bambang snatched the bottle, his hands trembling so violently that half the water spilled down his chin and soaked his collar. He drank in desperate, ragged gulps anyway, letting out a long, shuddering sigh as he finished half the bottle.

"Oh... oh, that's better," Mr. Bambang whispered, resting his head back against a bottom shelf. "Thank you, Arman. You're a good boy. Your mother raised you right."

"Yeah, well, let's just make sure we both live long enough for me to tell her that," Arman muttered, letting out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.

"Ding!" the system's voice chimed. "Act of compassion registered. Sparing resources to stabilize a civilian under distress. Reward: Two Karma Points."

"Nice," Arman whispered, a small grin tugging at his lips. "Hey, every little bit helps, right?"

"Are you talking to your invisible friend again?" Mr. Bambang asked, looking at Arman with a mix of awe and mild concern. "Seriously, Arman, what is that? Is it a Jinn? Did you make a pact with a spirit to get these powers?"

"A Jinn? No, Mr. Bambang, it's not a ghost," Arman laughed weakly, shaking his head. "Think of it like... a high-tech computer system. Like a video game on my phone, but it's installed in my brain."

"In your brain?" Mr. Bambang frowned, rubbing his temples. "That sounds incredibly dangerous. Aren't you worried it'll melt your head?"

"Right now, I'm more worried about the monsters outside melting my face," Arman pointed out, gesturing toward the shattered front entrance. "So I'll take the brain computer for now."

"Fair point," Mr. Bambang sighed, taking another small sip of water. "But what do we do now? We can't just stay in this minimarket forever."

"Actually, we probably can," Arman said, looking around at the rows of instant noodles, canned sardines, and snacks. "We've got food, we've got water, and now we have power. And as long as we're inside this store, that golden shield keeps us safe."

"But what about the rest of the world?" Mr. Bambang asked, his voice cracking with emotion. "What about my family? What about the police? Isn't anyone coming to save us?"

"I don't think there is a police force anymore, Mr. Bambang," Arman said quietly, his mind flashing back to his last phone call with Rio. "From what I heard before the phones went out... this is happening everywhere. People are... changing. It's not just a local riot."

Mr. Bambang stared at the floor, his shoulders sinking. "Everywhere? Even in the villages? Even across the sea?"

"Probably," Arman said. He didn't want to crush the older man's spirit completely, but lying to him wouldn't help either. "But we're alive. That's what matters right now."

"Are you sure you're okay now, Mr. Bambang?" Arman asked, watching the older man take another slow sip.

"Yes, yes, the water helps," Mr. Bambang said, wiping his brow. "My chest is still tight, but... I don't feel like I'm dying anymore. Just very, very old."

"You're fifty-six, Mr. Bambang. That's not that old," Arman said, trying to force a light tone. "You've still got a lot of years of complaining about my customer service left."

"Fifty-six is old enough when monsters are chasing you down the street, Arman," Mr. Bambang sighed, looking at his muddy shoes. "But thank you. Seriously. When I saw those things... I thought that was it. I thought about my wife, my kids... I thought I'd never see them again."

"Don't talk like that," Arman said, sitting down on a plastic crate next to him. "We're going to figure this out. I don't know how, but we will."

"And what about this store?" Mr. Bambang asked, looking around the golden-lit aisles. "How is it so bright? And why does it feel so... warm? Usually, the air conditioning in here is freezing."

"That's because of the upgrade," Arman explained. "The system I have... it lets me upgrade the store using points. I just spent ten points to turn the power back on."

"Points?" Mr. Bambang blinked. "Like credit card points? Or like those stamps you get when you buy ten cups of coffee?"

"More like... life points," Arman chuckled. "I get them by doing good deeds. Saving you gave me fifteen points."

"Saving me?" Mr. Bambang's eyes widened. "So... my life is worth fifteen points?"

"Actually, ten points," Arman corrected him with a smirk. "The other five were probably a bonus for not letting you get eaten by those dogs."

"A bonus?" Mr. Bambang scoffed, though a faint smile touched his lips. "Well, I'm glad my near-death experience was profitable for you, Arman."

"Hey, it paid for the lights," Arman said, pointing upward. "So you're welcome."

Suddenly, a loud, mechanical sputter erupted from the back of the store.

A heavy, industrial engine noise began to echo through the walls. It sounded like a massive diesel generator had been dropped right in the alleyway behind the store.

"What in the world is that?" Mr. Bambang gasped, dropping his water bottle. "It sounds like a helicopter is landing on the roof!"

"System!" Arman yelled in his mind, his heart leaping into his throat. "What is that noise? I thought you said this was a Solar-Cosmic generator! Why does it sound like a rusty tractor?"

"The Solar-Cosmic Generator requires a physical mechanical converter to interface with the store's outdated electrical grid," the system explained calmly. "The converter operates at approximately seventy-two decibels. Noise pollution is currently high."

"Seventy-two decibels?!" Arman panicked, stepping toward the back storage door. "That's as loud as a highway! Outside! Are you crazy? In a world full of monsters, you put a giant noise maker right in my backyard?!"

"The current generator model is basic," the system replied. "An acoustic dampener upgrade is available in the Safe Zone utility store for fifty Karma Points."

"Fifty points?! I only have seven points left!" Arman screamed in his head. "This is a scam! You did this on purpose to make me buy upgrades!"

"Arman!" Mr. Bambang shrieked, pointing toward the ceiling. "Look! What is that?"

Arman blinked, and a bright blue, semi-transparent map materialized in his field of vision. It was a holographic layout of the minimarket and the surrounding streets.

"Wait, can you see this too?" Arman asked Mr. Bambang.

"See what? That floating blue thing?" Mr. Bambang squinted, waving his hand through the air where the projection was. "No, I can't see anything, but you're staring at the wall like you're seeing a ghost again!"

"Oh, right. Only I can see it," Arman muttered. "System, what is this map?"

"An external radar function has been temporarily unlocked to assist the Host," the system announced. "Detecting local kinetic signatures."

"Are those red dots... monsters?" Arman asked, his voice dropping as he pointed at the screen.

"Yes, Host. The red dots represent active hostile entities within a fifty-meter radius," the system confirmed.

"There are so many of them," Arman whispered. "They're just... wandering around."

"What are you looking at, Arman?" Mr. Bambang pleaded, grabbing his arm. "Tell me what's happening. You're making me nervous!"

"Just... hang on, Mr. Bambang," Arman said, his eyes glued to the map. "System, what is that massive red marker at the edge of the map? It's way bigger than the other ones."

"Warning," the system's voice chimed, its tone losing some of its usual dryness. "A high-energy biological entity has been alerted by the acoustic vibrations of the Solar-Cosmic Generator. Class: Stage 2 Mutated Abomination."

"Stage 2?" Arman's breath hitched. "The dogs were Stage 1, right? How much stronger is a Stage 2?"

"A Stage 2 entity possesses five times the physical strength and durability of a Stage 1 canine," the system stated. "The Golden Sanctuary Shield can withstand its attacks, but the sustained kinetic impact will rapidly drain the shield's cosmic energy reserve."

"Wait, the shield can drain?" Arman gasped. "You said the shield was permanent!"

"The shield is permanent, but its maximum output is tied to the Safe Zone's available energy," the system clarified. "Sustained high-level attacks will deplete the generator's output, eventually causing a temporary system blackout."

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Arman groaned, clutching his head. "So if that giant thing keeps hitting the wall, the power goes out, and the shield drops?"

"Correct," the system said.

"Arman, what's going on?" Mr. Bambang yelled, shaking his shoulder. "Why is your face turning white? What does the brain-computer say?"

"It says we have a very big problem," Arman said, pointing toward the back of the store. "The generator we just turned on? It's too loud. And it just attracted something huge."

"Something huge?" Mr. Bambang's voice cracked. "Like... like a tiger?"

"Worse," Arman whispered.

On the holographic map, the massive crimson marker was no longer drifting. It had locked onto the source of the noise. And it was moving toward the back alley of the store at a terrifying speed.

"It's coming right for the generator," Arman whispered.

The heavy, rhythmic vibrations of massive footsteps began to echo through the concrete floor, growing louder and louder by the second.

"Arman..." Mr. Bambang whimpered, backing away toward the checkout counter. "What is that sound?"

"Stay behind me," Arman said, his hand tightening around the cold steel handle of his crowbar. "It's here."
