The kitchen filled with the rich aroma of roasted garlic and herbs as Liam Brooks stirred the sauce with practiced ease. His hands moved steadily, carefully plating the braised chicken with roasted vegetables. Everything had to be perfect for Emma.

His phone buzzed on the counter.

"Sir," the voice on the other end said respectfully. "I apologize for disturbing you."

"What is it, Ryan?" Liam asked, lowering the heat on the stove.

"Princess Natalia of Cordovia has requested a private dinner with you. She's willing to fly to your location personally. Should I arrange—"

"No," Liam said simply. "Decline politely."

There was a pause. "Understood, sir. There's also another matter. King Alexander of Verdia has sent an official offer. He wishes to hire you as the nation's guardian. The compensation package includes—"

"Tell him I'm not interested," Liam interrupted, checking the temperature of the chicken.

Ryan let out a small, uncertain laugh. "Sir, may I ask... what could possibly be more important than serving as a king's guardian?"

"Being here," Liam replied calmly. "I have responsibilities."

"You mean... being the live-in son-in-law of the Harper family?" Ryan's tone carried a hint of disbelief.

Liam's expression didn't change. "I'm repaying a debt. That's all you need to know."

"But sir, they treat you like—"

"That's enough, Ryan."

"Yes, sir. My apologies."

Liam ended the call just as he heard the front door unlock.

Emma Harper stepped inside, her shoulders slumped with exhaustion. Her designer suit was wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. When she saw Liam standing in the kitchen doorway with a warm smile, her jaw tightened.

"Dinner's ready," Liam said gently, gesturing toward the dining table. "I made your favorite."

Emma's gaze swept over the carefully prepared meal, but instead of gratitude, irritation flickered across her face. She couldn't understand it—couldn't understand why her grandfather had insisted she marry this man before he died. Liam was ordinary. Plain. Nothing special about him at all.

"I'm not hungry," she muttered, dropping her bag on the couch.

"Emma, you should eat something. You look tired—"

"I said I'm not hungry."

Liam studied her face with concern. "Did something happen at work?"

Before Emma could answer, the front door swung open again.

"Oh, I'm sure something happened," a sharp voice cut through the air. "But whatever it is, you certainly can't help her."

Victoria Harper, Emma's mother, swept into the room like a cold wind. Her eyes landed on Liam with pure contempt.

"A useless man like you can't solve anything," Victoria continued, her voice dripping with venom. "You're good for nothing except cooking and cleaning like some kind of servant."

Liam said nothing. He'd learned long ago that silence was the best response.

Victoria ignored him completely, turning to her daughter. "Emma, come with me. We need to talk."

"Mom, not now—"

"Now," Victoria snapped, grabbing Emma's arm and pulling her toward the bedroom. "This is important."

The door slammed shut behind them.

Liam stood alone in the living room, the untouched dinner growing cold on the table. Slowly, quietly, he walked to the bedroom door and pressed his ear against it.

"I told you months ago," Victoria's shrill voice echoed through the wood. "Divorce that worthless parasite and marry Ethan   Morgan ! The  Morgan  family is B-tier! Do you understand what that means for us?"

"Mother—"

"Don't interrupt me! If you had listened to me back then, our family wouldn't be in this mess right now! But no—you had to honor your grandfather's dying wish. Look where that got us!"

"I can handle this myself," Emma said coldly. "I don't need Ethan Morgan 's help."

Victoria laughed bitterly. "Handle it? Handle it? We're about to lose everything, Emma! The company is being targeted, our investors are pulling out, and all you can say is you'll handle it?"

"I said I'll take care of it."

"You're a fool. Just like your grandfather was a fool for forcing you to marry that animal in the kitchen."

Liam's jaw clenched, but he remained perfectly still.

"That man is less than a dog," Victoria continued viciously. "He eats our food, lives under our roof, and contributes nothing. Even a stray mutt on the street has more dignity than him."

"That's enough," Emma said quietly.

"It's the truth! You deserve someone like Ethan —someone with power, connections, money. Not some pathetic nobody who can't even afford to take you out to dinner without using your credit card."

"I said that's enough!"

Silence fell.

A moment later, the bedroom door opened. Emma emerged with her face set in hard lines. She walked straight past Liam without looking at him and went into her own room, closing the door softly but firmly behind her.

Victoria appeared next, shooting Liam a look of pure disgust.

"Clean up this mess," she said, waving dismissively at the dining table. "At least make yourself useful for once."

She disappeared into her room as well.

Liam stood alone in the dimly lit hallway. His expression, usually calm and neutral, slowly darkened. His eyes grew cold—dangerous.

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

"Ryan," he said quietly. "I need information."

"Yes, sir?"

"Find out who's targeting the Harper family's company. I want names, evidence, and their entire operation mapped out by tomorrow morning."

Emma packed a bag for Maggie, Liam loaded the car, and they drove across town to George and Victoria's house.Emma's childhood home sat on a quiet street with tall trees and neighbors who'd known her since she was Maggie's age. The porch swing still creaked the same way and the front door still stuck if you didn't pull hard enough.George opened the door before Emma could knock. He swept Maggie into his arms and kissed her cheek. “There's my girl."Maggie giggled and grabbed his nose. Victoria appeared behind him, wiping her hands on a towel. "Let them in, George. Don't stand there blocking the door."George stepped aside. Emma hugged her mother, then her father, then walked into the living room where Margaret was already settled in her favorite chair. "About time," Margaret said. "I've been here an hour.""It is traffic," Emma said."Excuse." Margaret held out her arms for Maggie. The baby went to her h

Six months had passed since the announcement. Emma sat in her office at Titan Global, morning light streaming through the windows. "You've been here since six again.""I like the peace and silence. It helps me focus." Emma confessed."You like working yourself into the ground." Mia set the pastry down. "Eat and that's an order from your friend who also happens to be your assistant."Emma smiled and took a bite. "Happy?""Ecstatic." Mia sat across from her. "Okay, here comes your schedule. The conference hall at Titan Global headquarters was packed, reporters filled every seat, cameras lined the back wall, and the sound of conversation filled the room. Emma stood in a side room, looking through the window at the crowd, her heart pounding in a way it hadn't since the day she faced the board alone. Mia appeared beside her with a cup of water. "You look like you're about to face a firing squad." "Honestly it feels like it." She said truthfully. "You've got this." Mia squeezed her arm. "I'll be right there at the side. If you forget a name or a number, just look at me. I'll mouth it." Emma laughed. "You'll mouth it? That's your plan?" "It's a good plan and it’s very subtle." Mia said and they both laughed, and the tension eased slightly. George walked in, dressed in his best suit, the one he only wore for weddings and funerals. Margaret followed, elegant as always, with Victoria beside her looking proud and nervous at the same time. "You ready?" George asked. "No but

The Harper Construction board met in a small conference room on the second floor of their headquarters. The building was old, like everything else about the company, but it had character. Emma arrived early with Mia, her friend and assistant, who carried a second copy of every document and a tablet for notes."You okay?" Mia asked as they walked up the stairs."I am but I have to say, I’m feeling a little bit nervous," Emma admitted."You? Nervous?" Mia grinned. "You just took down your cousin in front of the whole world. This is just a board meeting.""This is different, this is a family business." She argued.Mia squeezed her arm. "And you're family too. Don't forget that."They walked into the conference room, four board members sat around the table. George was there, representing the family and three others Emma knew by name but not well, Mr. Dawson, the oldest, who'd worked with her grandfather; Mrs. Chen, who handled legal matters; and Mr. Peterson, a local businessman who'd jo
