Evelyn’s POV

The coldness of the hospital sheets was nothing compared to the weight in my chest. The blinding white ceiling was a poor replacement for the stars I used to love watching. And the silence around me? Deafening.

I could hear them outside my door—nurses whispering, a trolley being pushed down the corridor, a faint ring of a phone somewhere down the hall. But none of it mattered.

I was awake. Alive. And yet… I felt like I hadn’t fully returned. I tried to remember the last thing that happened to me. My eyes opened wide when I did.

I should be dead but somehow I miraculously escaped.

How come?

My body still ached with an invisible pressure, like I’d been swimming through concrete for weeks. My fingers twitched against the sheets as I slowly curled and uncurled them, a grim reminder that I was still here. Still waiting.

And Klaus hadn’t come.
