Ethan rose slowly from the sofa.
His eyes had changed. The emptiness from this morning was gone. What remained was something quieter. Sharper. Like a blade that had been sharpened in silence.
"You're sure I'm the one who doesn't belong here?" he asked. Low. Even.
He took one step forward.
"Sometimes... the people who look down on everyone else are the ones standing where they shouldn't."
Julian moved fast. Too fast for a man in expensive shoes. He lunged forward, palm flat, and shoved Ethan's chest with deliberate force.
But Ethan didn't move.
Not an inch.
Julian's hand connected with solid muscle beneath the cheap jacket. His wrist jolted back slightly, as if he'd pushed a wall. His eyes narrowed. A flicker of surprise crossed his face.
Then Julian glanced over his shoulder. Just a quick look. A glance at the broad-shouldered man standing two steps behind him. The bodyguard. Thick neck. Crossed arms. Built like a door.
Julian's posture relaxed. A thin smile crept onto his lips.
"Easy there, buddy," Julian said, his tone light, almost amused. He rolled his shoulders back, chin lifting. "Don't you dare touch my woman."
Ethan's jaw locked.
*My woman.*
The words hit him like a slap before the actual slap even came. Vanessa was still legally his wife. The ink on their marriage certificate hadn't even dried in his memory. And this man—this stranger in a cream suit—claimed her like she was something he'd bought off a shelf.
Ethan's hands curled into fists at his sides. His nails bit into his palms. Sharp. Stinging. His chest rose and fell, but his face stayed still. Controlled. He was not going to lose again. Not today. Not like this.
"A woman like her," Ethan said, his voice low and steady, "and you're proud of that?"
His eyes flicked to Vanessa. Just for a second. Then back to Julian.
"You two really have no shame."
CRACK.
The slap landed hard across Ethan's cheek. The sound exploded through the lobby like a gunshot.
A thin line of red bloomed on his skin. He could feel the sting of broken nails dragging across his jaw.
Vanessa stood there, chest heaving, her hand still raised. Her eyes burned.
"No shame?" Her voice cracked upward, shaking with fury. "You dare call me shameless?"
She stepped closer. Her finger jabbed toward his chest.
"Remember this morning? You were begging me! You! On your knees, practically! You're the shameless one! You're a useless, irresponsible husband!"
Her voice rose with every word, bouncing off the marble walls. Guests turned. Conversations died. The piano music seemed to fade into nothing.
"You were never a real man, Ethan! Never!" She spat his name like it tasted rotten. "This is all your fault! My life is a mess because of you! A broke, pathetic man like you couldn't even put food on the table—"
Her breath hitched, but she didn't stop.
"—and now you're causing problems everywhere you go!"
Whispers rippled through the lobby. Eyes darted between them. Vanessa didn't care. She spun around, scanning the room.
"Where's security?!" she shouted. "Is nobody watching?! This man is stalking me!"
She pointed at Ethan again. Her finger trembled.
"Hey! Security! How is someone like him even allowed inside?! Throw him out! Or do I need to call your manager and tell them you're all incompetent?!"
Across the lobby, two security guards exchanged a look. They started forward, then stopped. One of them pressed a finger to the radio clipped to his shoulder, murmuring something quick and low.
Ethan caught a fragment. "...came in with Derek... yes, Derek himself..."
The guards hesitated. Their eyes flicked between Ethan and Vanessa. They knew who Derek was. They knew who he worked for. But Vanessa and Julian weren't nobodies either. The clothes. The confidence. The way they carried themselves like they owned the ground beneath them.
One wrong move could cost someone their job.
Finally, the guards stepped forward. Firm strides. Careful eyes.
"You took your time!" Julian barked, stepping toward them. "I'll have all of you reported. Handle this. He's disturbing the peace."
But the lead guard didn't turn toward Ethan.
He stopped in front of Julian.
"I'm sorry, sir," the guard said. Polite. Firm. "I'm going to have to ask you to keep your voice down. Or step outside."
Silence.
One heartbeat. Two.
Vanessa's mouth fell open. Julian stared at the guard like he'd just spoken a foreign language.
"What? Are you insane?" Julian pointed at Ethan. "He's the one you should be throwing out! Not us!"
"You really don't know who you're dealing with. I'll make sure you—"
Julian's words died mid-sentence.
A woman approached. Young. Mid-twenties. Dark hair pulled back in a neat ponytail. A crisp navy business suit. A small pin on her lapel caught the light. She walked with quiet authority, heels clicking against the marble in a steady rhythm.
She stopped directly in front of Ethan.
Then she bowed. A full, respectful bow.
"I apologize for the inconvenience, Mr. Cole," she said, her voice clear and professional. "I'll be taking over for Derek. Please follow me. I'll escort you to Mr. Arthur's suite."
"What do you mean?" Julian cut in, his voice sharp with disbelief. "I'm the one with the appointment! I'm the one meeting Arthur Cole! Why are you talking to him?"
He jabbed his finger toward Ethan. "You've got the wrong person! It's not him. It's me!"
The woman didn't turn her head. Didn't blink. She kept her gaze fixed on Ethan, waiting.
Ethan let out a slow breath. Just a quiet sigh through his nose. Then he gave a single, short nod.
The woman gestured with one open hand. Smooth. Elegant. A path cleared.
Ethan turned and walked.
He didn't look back. Not at Vanessa. Not at Julian. Not at the open-mouthed guests watching the scene unfold. He walked beside the young woman, his steps calm, steady, unhurried.
As if they had never existed.
"Hey! HEY!" Julian shouted, lunging forward.
Two security guards stepped into his path. Solid. Immovable.
"You've got the wrong guy! Let me through!"
Vanessa screamed behind him, her voice cracking, raw with disbelief.
"He's just a driver! He's nothing! You have the wrong man!"

"My name is Harper. Harper Reed. I'm sorry I didn't get there sooner, Mr. Cole."The young woman gave a small, polite bow. Her voice was steady, professional, but there was a tightness in her shoulders that hadn't been there a moment ago.Ethan kept his eyes forward. On the elevator doors. On the numbers climbing. Floor after floor, ticking upward in silence."Not your fault," he said. Flat. Not cold. Not warm. Just factual. "They were looking for trouble either way. Had nothing to do with you."Beside him, he heard her exhale. Slow. Quiet. The kind of breath people let out when they've been holding it too long.He didn't look at her. But he could feel the tension leave her frame. Like she'd been bracing for something ugly and it never came. The elevator hummed. Soft. Steady. The only sound in the small glass box. Then, without meaning to, his eyes shifted. Not to her directly. To the polished metal wall beside them. Their reflection stared back at him. Chapter 8. The Uninvited Guest
The Grand Meridian towered over the street like a monument to wealth. Glass and steel gleamed under the bright morning sun, casting long, sharp shadows across the pavement. It looked like a fortress built for people who never had to check price tags.Ethan stood on the sidewalk, staring up at the towering facade. He had been here before. Dozens of times. But always behind the wheel of his cab. He would drop off a fare, watch them walk through those heavy glass doors, and drive away into the smog and noise of Crestview. He never cared about the building. It was just another stop on the meter. A place for rich people. Not his world. But today was different.Today, his feet were actually planted on the pristine marble steps. He looked at the polished brass handles. The doormen in crisp, tailored uniforms. The guests walking in and out like they owned the very air they breathed.A tight feeling squeezed his chest.*Who would have thought?* he wondered, his mind spinning. *Who would have t
Chapter 7. Buried Secrets
The office sat on the top floor of The Grand Meridian, all glass and polished steel. Arthur Cole stood at the window, his reflection ghosting across the pane. Below him, Crestview crawled with morning traffic, horns blaring, lights blinking in the gray dawn.Behind him, a man in a dark suit stood rigid. Hands clasped. Head bowed. Waiting.Arthur didn't turn around."Did you send the hair samples?" His voice was flat. Cold. The kind of calm that came before a storm."Yes, Mr. Cole. Both yours and the young man's. They arrived at the lab an hour ago." The man paused. Swallowed. "Results should be ready by tomorrow morning."Silence. The city hummed beyond the glass. Then Arthur's voice dropped lower. Heavier. Like a blade being drawn slowly from its sheath."Now explain something to me." He turned. Just his head. His eyes locked onto the man like a rifle sight. "How did my people fail to track my daughter for *decades*? How did she end up in a grave, and I didn't even know she was dead?
Chapter 6. The Last Goodbye
Ethan woke to the sound of morning traffic filtering through thin curtains. His neck ached. The sofa was too short for his legs, and a crease ran down his cheek from the worn cushion. He hadn't slept in the bedroom since Vanessa left. Couldn't bring himself to touch that side of the bed. The sheets still smelled like her shampoo, and every night, that faint trace of lavender made something twist in his chest. He missed her. God help him, he still missed her. Even after everything she'd said. Even after the divorce papers. Even after she'd looked at him like he was nothing.Love and hate swirled together inside him, tangled so tight he couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. But this morning, his mind wasn't on Vanessa. It was on last night. The old man. The chase. The name that had fallen from a stranger's lips like a ghost stepping back into the living world.*Evelyn Cole.*His mother. And the man who claimed to be her father. Chapter 5. The Family Photo
"How do you know my mother's name?" Ethan's voice came out tight. Hard. His hands were still curled around the steering wheel, knuckles white. The old man covered his face with both hands. His shoulders shook. When he lowered them again, tears were streaming down his cheeks, catching the dim light from the hotel lobby outside."Where is she?" His voice broke on the words. Raw. Desperate. "Where is my Evelyn? Tell me. Please. Where is she?"Ethan went still. His mind spun, grasping at something — anything — that made sense. Too many dark possibilities flooded in at once. What if this man was the reason his father disappeared? What if—No. That was too far. Too much. But the old man's crying was real. It was the kind of grief that couldn't be faked. The sound of someone who had carried a weight for decades and finally, finally cracked under it."Who are you?" Ethan asked again. Firmer this time.
