"Put the house down, Bob! Put it down right now!" Ethan screamed, ducking as a shower of splinters rained over his head. "You're going to kill us both!"

"No! No sleep! No nap!" Bob roared, his twelve-year-old muscles bulging as he held up the entire corner of the log cabin with one beefy hand. "I want to play! You can't make me sleep!"

"Bob, buddy, look at me," Ethan pleaded, raising his hands slowly. "If you pull that beam, the roof is going to squash us. Like bugs. Splat. You don't want to be a squashed bug, do you? Squash bugs don't get to play tag. They just get flat."

"Want juice! Want juice now!" Bob screamed, his voice cracking from a high-pitched toddler squeal to a deep, booming adolescent rattle. "Give me juice or I smash the whole place!"

"Okay, okay! The juice is right here! Just... let go of the building!" Ethan begged, staring desperately at his messy desk. "Don't shake it! Please don't shake it! The roof is literally groaning, Bob!"

"No juice! You lie to me! You always tell me to wait!" Bob howled, shaking the support timber. "I hate waiting! Waiting is for losers!"

"Who taught you that word? Was it Sarah?" Ethan sighed, shaking his head. "Look, I'm not lying! Look who came to visit!" He grabbed a crudely painted wooden block from the shelf and waved it frantically. "It’s Mr. Squeaks! He came all the way from the deep, dark forest just to see you!"

Bob froze, his face twisting in confusion. "Mr. Squeaks?"

"Yeah! Mr. Squeaks!" Ethan threw his voice into a ridiculous, high-pitched falsetto. "Hey there, Bobby-boy! Don't crush Ethan, okay? If you crush him, who's going to tell us bedtime stories? Who's going to make the delicious sweet-berry juice?"

"Mr. Squeaks sounds funny," Bob muttered, his grip on the timber softening. "Why does he talk like that?"

"Because he's a magical forest block, Bob!" Ethan squeaked again, bobbing the wood in the air. "He says, 'I brought you a secret juice box, Bob! But only if you gently—very gently—set the cabin back down!' Can you do that for Mr. Squeaks?"

"Gently?" Bob asked, sniffing loudly. "Like a baby chick?"

"Yes, super gently. Like you're putting a little baby bird to bed. Nice and slow. Just let the beam slide right into the groove."

With a grunt, Bob lowered the heavy cedar beam. The cabin groaned, settling back onto its stone foundation with a dull thud.

"Good boy," Ethan sighed, handing over a hollowed gourd. "Here. Take your juice. You earned it."

Bob snatched it, sucking happily. "Mr. Squeaks can watch me?"

"Yeah, buddy. He'll watch you." Ethan leaned against the wall, rubbing his temples. "Man, you're getting too strong for this. If you keep growing like this, I'm going to need steel beams. My spreadsheets say we are officially out of nails, anyway."

"Ethan? Why you look sad?" Bob asked, his giant eyes suddenly wide with concern. "Did Bob do bad?"

"No, you didn't do bad, Bob. I'm just... tired. Managing you guys is hard. You're growing so fast, but your brains are still so little. Why did those lab people do this to you? What was the point of accelerating your bodies if you're still toddlers inside? It's a mystery I can't solve. I really wish I had the answers."

"What's a lab?" Bob asked, tilting his head. "Is it tasty?"

"No, it's not tasty. It's a place where people in white coats made big mistakes. They made you grow too fast, Bob. They made all of you grow physically, but left your hearts and minds behind. I just wish I knew why they did it before they abandoned us here."

"Did they make Mr. Squeaks too?" Bob asked.

"No, I made Mr. Squeaks because we don't have real toys anymore. We don't have anything anymore. Just this island, some seeds, and a lot of questions. Now, drink your juice, okay?"

"Okay. But you have to tell me a story later. A big story with dragons!" Bob grinned.

"Sure, buddy. A big story about dragons who actually listen to their big brothers."

BOOM.

A massive crash echoed from the southern shore, shaking the very floorboards.

"What was that?" Bob whimpered, dropping his gourd. "Is it a giant monster?"

"Stay here, Bob!" Ethan ordered, his exhaustion vanishing instantly. "Do not touch the beams! Do not go outside! Do you hear me?"

"But I'm scared!" Bob wailed. "Don't leave me alone!"

"Mr. Squeaks is guarding you! Talk to him! I'll be right back!" Ethan yelled, bolting out the door. "Keep your eyes on the block, Bob! I mean it!"

He ran down the dirt path, his chest burning. The ocean waves were crashing violently against the southern reef. Through the sea spray, he saw a bizarre shape.

"No way," Ethan gasped, running faster. "What in the world is that ridiculous thing? Who builds a raft like that?"

It was a raft made of hollowed-out coconut trunks, tied together with messy vines, carrying a tattered palm-leaf sail.

"Hey! Is anyone on that piece of junk?" Ethan screamed, hitting the wet sand. "Hello! Can you hear me?"

The raft slammed against the sharp coral, tilting dangerously. On the deck lay an unconscious woman, her dark hair tangled in wet vines.

"Oh, great. Just what I needed," Ethan muttered, kicking off his boots. "Hey! Wake up! You're about to hit the rocks! Get up!"

The woman didn't move. A huge wave lifted the raft, preparing to smash it completely.

"Why does this always happen to me?" Ethan shouted to the wind. "I am absolutely, one hundred percent going to regret this! Don't you dare drown on my watch!"

He plunged headfirst into the fre

ezing, violent surf, desperately swimming toward her. "Hold on! I'm coming!"

The water was ice. It wasn’t just cold; it was a physical weight, pressing against Ethan’s ribs like a hydraulic clamp. He kicked hard, his lungs burning, his fingers locked around Lyra’s wrist with a desperate, white-knuckled grip.Above, the surface was a dancing, fractured kaleidoscope of crimson light."Ethan!" Lyra’s voice was a muffled bubble of panic, but her eyes, wide and luminous in the darkness, tracked his gaze.He didn't answer. He couldn't. He lunged upward, his shoulder muscles screaming, dragging her through the turbulence. They breached the surface with a ragged, desperate gasp, the air hitting their faces like a slap. The serpent was gone. In its place, a jagged, floating island of debris—the skeleton of their outrigger.Ethan hauled himself onto a floating cedar plank, then grabbed Lyra’s vest, heaving her up beside him. She collapsed, shivering, her hair plastered to her face like dark ink."Survival probability," she rasped, coughing up saltwater, "just plummeted

  • Chapter 10: The Horizon of the New World

The horizon didn’t just change; it groaned. The sound of shifting tectonic plates echoed across the ocean, a low, guttural vibration that made the very water around their outrigger feel like liquid lead.Ethan gripped the steering oar until his knuckles turned ivory. He didn't dare look away from the path ahead, even as the crimson light of the System’s global announcement washed over the deck."Lyra, tell me this is just a glitch," Ethan shouted over the roar of the sea. "Tell me the islands aren't actually moving."Lyra was hunched over the holographic display, her fingers dancing through the flickering blue light. Her face, usually a mask of calm, cold logic, was pale. "It is not a glitch, Ethan. The System has triggered a 'Global Restructuring Event.' It is essentially a forced consolidation of all active player territories. It is the ultimate bottlenecking strategy.""A bottleneck?" Ethan glanced at the screen. A new, terrifying interface had replaced the sky. It was a golden, tr

  • Chapter 9: The Shadow of Gideon

The ground beneath them shuddered with such violence that Ethan had to dig his heels into the volcanic grit to keep from being thrown backward. It wasn’t a natural tremor; it felt like a mechanical heartbeat, rhythmic and hollow, vibrating deep within the island’s basalt core."Ethan, the structural integrity of the beach is failing!" Lyra shouted, her voice cutting through the rising roar. She didn't look at him, her eyes fixed on the man named Clara, who was currently scrambling toward their outrigger. "The island’s heartbeat is accelerating to a localized seismic threshold. We are standing on an artificial platform!""An artificial platform?" Ethan grabbed Clara by the harness, hauling him toward the water. "What are you talking about?""It is not an island, Ethan! It is a biological containment facility," Clara gasped, his face gray with terror. "Marcus—he doesn't own this place. He’s just the janitor. A warlord named Gideon runs everything from the central hub. He watches the Sys

  • Chapter 8: The Interpretive Dance of Distraction

The volcanic sand of Island 43 crunched under their boots like shattered glass. The air here was heavy, tasting of copper and stagnant rot. Ethan gripped his hatchet, his knuckles white, while Lyra scanned the tree line with a pair of makeshift lenses fashioned from polished quartz."Ethan, hold," Lyra whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Thermal signatures detected. Three o’clock. Two individuals, guarding an access point to an interior stockade.""Are they armed?" Ethan asked, crouching low behind a basalt boulder."Primitive weaponry. Sharpened bone spears and crude weighted nets," she replied, her eyes narrowing. "Their heart rates are elevated. They are agitated. It matches the behavioral profile of subjects suffering from forced labor exhaustion.""Great," Ethan muttered. "We’re dealing with a tyrant who likes to crack the whip. Let’s make this quick. If we can get to that bamboo cage without being seen, we can free the captives and be back on the outrigger before anyone reali

  • Chapter 7: The Sinking SOS

The blue light pulsed against their faces, casting long, jittery shadows across the clearing. Ethan stared at the hologram, his heart hammering against his ribs.`EXTERNAL TRANSMISSION DETECTED FROM ISLAND 43...``STATUS: CRITICAL. OXYGEN LEVELS DEPLETED. EMERGENCY BREACH IN PROGRESS.`"An emergency breach?" Ethan turned to Lyra, his eyes wide. "That sounds like a ship or a bunker failing. We have to go, Lyra. Right now."Lyra stepped closer to the screen, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. "The signal is looping. It’s an automated distress beacon. If it’s an oxygen failure, the survival window is mathematically closing by the second. We are looking at a fourteen percent survival probability if we delay.""Fourteen percent is better than zero," Ethan said, already running toward the beach. "Help me with the logs. We need a frame for the outrigger."Lyra didn't hesitate. She grabbed a coil of vines, her coconut armor clacking rhythmically as she sprinted after him. "Ethan, your c

  • Chapter 6: The Gravity of a Toddler

"Are you seriously drawing a line in the dirt?" Ethan asked, staring at the thick white chalk stripe separating the cabin’s wooden floorboards."It is not just a line, Ethan. It is a geopolitical boundary," Lyra retorted, dusting the white powder off her hands. "This side is my sovereign territory. That side is yours.""We live in a one-room log cabin, Lyra! We don't have enough space for sovereign territories!""We do if we respect spatial optimization. And right now, your dirty boots are actively violating my airspace.""My boots are on my side of the line!" Ethan yelled, pointing wildly at the floor."The mud on them is radiating dried particulate matter into my atmospheric flow," Lyra argued, crossing her arms defensively. "Furthermore, the thermodynamic heat rising from your unwashed socks is creating a localized warm front that is disrupting my sleep cycle.""They're wool socks, Lyra! They're supposed to keep my feet warm!""They are a biological hazard. Please relocate them app
