Chapter 15: Alleyway Mechanics
"Move!" Kenji roared, his hand slamming into the back of Dorian’s collar and dragging him flat against the vibrating steel floor.
Another high-velocity round punched through the railcar’s metal wall, showering them in a spray of orange sparks and jagged iron splinters. The sharp, deafening crack of supersonic lead echoed a split second later.
"They're on the high ridge!" Seraphine screamed, her hands clamped over her head as she crawled toward the sliding side door. "How did they find us so fast?"
"Does it matter?" Kenji snarled. He kicked the jammed door open, the rusted metal screeching in protest as it slid back to reveal the rain-slicked labyrinth of the shipping container yard. "Out! Now! Before they bring down the heavy ordnance!"
Dorian scrambled on hands and knees, his boots slipping on the wet floorboards. The golden hum in his spine was a physical weight, vibrating so violently it made his teeth click together. "Kenji, I can't—my legs, they're shaking—"
"Then crawl!" Kenji grabbed Dorian’s jacket, hauling him over the threshold.
They tumbled out of the railcar, hitting the gravel and mud just as a barrage of automatic gunfire chewed the carriage’s frame into Swiss cheese. The smell of burning rubber and wet rust filled the freezing night air.
"Left! Behind the red stack!" Kenji directed, his voice a gravelly bark over the drumming rain.
They scrambled behind a towering wall of corrugated steel containers. Above them, searchlights from the high ridge cut through the downpour, sweeping across the yard like giant, predatory eyes.
"It's Malphas," Seraphine panted, her back pressed against the cold steel of a shipping container. Her wet hair clung to her face, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and calculation. "Those aren't my father's corporate suits. The muzzle flash—those are syndicate-issue suppressors. Elder Vane's personal hunters."
"I don't care if they're the Pope’s personal choir," Kenji spat, pulling his revolver from his waistband and checking the cylinder. "I’ve got five rounds left. No heavy gear. No tactical support. We are running on fumes."
"We can't fight them in the open," Dorian whispered, clutching his chest. Underneath his wet shirt, the golden veins beneath his skin were pulsing erratically, casting a faint, sickly glow against the dark metal behind him. "They’ll just pin us down and wait for the corporate teams to clean up."
"He's right," Seraphine said, peering around the edge of the container. "There's a sweep team entering the southern corridor. Three men. Armored. They’re moving in a tight wedge. We’re being funneled."
Kenji reached into his tactical vest, his fingers wrapping around a cold cylinder. "Then we change the map. Stay close, keep your heads down, and don't stop running."
With a flick of his wrist, Kenji pulled the pin on a low-tech smoke canister and hurled it into the narrow alleyway between the containers.
Ssssssss.
Thick, chemical gray smoke erupted from the cylinder, rapidly mixing with the heavy rain to create a suffocating, impenetrable wall of fog.
"Go!" Kenji hissed, shoving Dorian forward.
They ran blind into the gray void. The sound of their boots splashing in deep puddles was covered by the hiss of the smoke, but the syndicate hunters were already adapting. Infrared lasers began to slice through the fog, searching for heat signatures.
"Thermal scopes!" Seraphine gasped, stumbling over a discarded iron chain. "The smoke won't hold them for long!"
"Keep moving!" Kenji replied, his hand on her shoulder, steering her through a sudden right turn into a narrower gap. "The containers are insulated. If we get close enough to the central generator pile, the ambient heat will scramble their sensors!"
"There!" Dorian pointed toward a massive, humming power block at the center of the yard, surrounded by stacks of weathered wooden crates and spare industrial parts.
But as they rounded the corner, the world seemed to freeze.
Two figures stepped out from the shadows of a towering container stack. They wore sleek, matte-black ballistic armor, their faces obscured by silent, insect-like night-vision goggles. They didn't shout. They didn't demand surrender.
The lead hitman raised a silenced submachine gun, pointing it straight at Kenji’s chest.
"Down!" Kenji lunged, throwing his body weight into Seraphine to knock her out of the line of fire.
He managed to fire one shot from his revolver. The bullet hit the hitman's shoulder armor, sparking off the heavy plating but failing to stop him. The hitman barely flinched, his weapon tracking Kenji’s falling form.
Dorian watched it happen in slow motion.
The rain seemed to hang suspended in the air. The golden hum in his spine flared, no longer a dull ache, but a roaring furnace of pure, volatile energy. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.
Not again, Dorian thought, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. I won't let them die because I froze.
"Hey!" Dorian screamed.
The second hitman snapped his weapon toward Dorian, but it was already too late.
Dorian didn't think. He didn't plan. He simply leaned into the boiling pressure behind his ribs and let it rip.
The air around him warped, a high-frequency distortion snapping like a whip. With a ragged, explosive burst of golden light, Dorian executed the Shatter-Step.
He didn't glide; he projected.
The sheer, uncontrolled force of the displacement launched him forward like a human cannonball. He bypassed the distance instantly, his boots barely touching the wet gravel as he tore through the space between them.
He collided with the lead enforcer with a sickening, metallic crunch.
The sheer momentum carried both of them backward, crashing violently through a heavy wooden crate filled with spare engine blocks. Splinters of wood and rusted metal exploded around them in a chaotic shower.
"What the—" the second hitman gasped, his professional calm instantly shattering as his partner was literally thrown fifteen feet into the air.
Kenji didn't waste the second. From the ground, he rolled onto his side, raised his revolver, and fired twice.
Both rounds struck the second hitman directly in the unarmored throat. The man choked, his weapon clattering to the wet concrete as he collapsed into the mud, clutching his neck.
"Dorian!" Seraphine scrambled up, rushing toward the shattered remains of the wooden crate.
Dorian lay amidst the wreckage, coughing violently. The lead enforcer beneath him was unconscious, his chest plate cracked from the sheer force of the impact. Dorian tried to push himself up, but his arms buckled, his hands sinking into the wet mud.
"I... I did it," Dorian muttered, his voice hoarse, a thin line of dark blood leaking from his nose. "Kenji... I got him."
Kenji dragged himself over, his face pale but his expression grimly impressed. He grabbed Dorian by the shoulders, pulling him out of the debris. "You did, kid. You saved my life. But we have to go. The rest of them heard those shots."
"Dorian, look at me," Seraphine said, her voice suddenly rising in pitch, laced with a new, deeper panic.
Dorian looked down at his own hands.
The golden shimmer that usually danced beneath his skin was gone. In its place, a dark, burning crimson light was beginning to spiderweb up his forearms, pulsing like hot coals beneath his flesh. The heat radiating from his body was so intense that the rainwater landing on his skin instantly hissed and turned to steam.
"My chest," Dorian gasped, his eyes rolling back as he clutched at his shirt. "It feels like... like it's boiling."
He collapsed against Kenji’s shoulder, his entire body seizing as a ragged, agonizing scream tore from his throat.
"His system is overloading!" Seraphine cried, her fingers frantically checking his burning pulse. "The Shatter-Step—it’s tearing his cellula
r structure apart from the inside out! We don't have hours, Kenji. His heart is going to explode!"

Chapter 30: Spoils of War"He's right around the corner," Dorian gasped, clutching his chest as the crimson light beneath his skin flickered like a dying ember. "Third bulkhead down. He's weaponizing the corridor's security feed.""Let him try," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife back into its sheath with a sharp click before ripping a high-pressure steam valve off the auxiliary wall unit. "Seraphine, keep Dorian behind the turbine housing. If Vance gets past me, put a round through his skull. Don't hesitate.""I never do," Seraphine said coldly, dragging the shivering boy out of the line of fire as a dense, blinding white hiss of scalding steam erupted across the narrow metal walkway. The deafening roar of the freighter's engines drowned out the initial sound of the ambush, but the sudden, violent clash of steel against steel echoed sharply through the vibrating lower deck. Turning the Blade
Chapter 29: Turning the Blade"Stay down, Dorian," Kenji snapped, not even turning around as he kept his eyes locked on the twisting maze of steam pipes stretching across the lower engineering deck. "One wrong step and that spinal shunt is going to blow its seals. We don't need you bleeding out before Vance even gets his hands on you.""I’m not... useless," Dorian wheezed, his hands clawing weakly at the rusted metal plating of the deck as another violent tremor wracked his frame. The crimson light glowing beneath the skin of his collarbone pulsed erratically, casting a sickly, bioluminescent hue across his contorted features. "I can feel him. In the static... down the corridor."Seraphine dropped to one knee beside the boy, shoving him firmly back against the bulkhead. "Shut up, Dorian. Listen to Kenji. If Vance is tracking your biometric signature, every word you choke out is basically screaming our GPS coordinates right into his earpiece.""She’s right," Kenji whispered, his body t

Chapter 28: Iron and Steam"Vance isn't the type to wait for a harbor clearance," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife from its sheath with a dry, whispering hiss. "He’s already aboard. I found a fresh boot print on the ladder leading down from the main deck—and it definitely doesn't belong to any deckhand on this rust bucket."Seraphine's grip tightened around her weapon, her knuckles turning bone-white in the dim yellow emergency glow of the hold. "How long ago?""Minutes. Maybe less," Kenji replied, his eyes scanning the labyrinth of massive steel pipes and towering auxiliary steam turbines that hummed with a deafening, vibrating roar. "He’s moving quiet. Trying to secure the asset without tripping shipboard alarms or alerting the crew.""Which means he wants Dorian breathing," Seraphine said, casting a sharp glance toward the shivering youth slumped against a bulkhead.Dorian tried to push himself up, his teeth gritted against the sudden, agonizing flare of pain radiating from
The Hunter Aboard
Chapter 27: The Hunter Aboard"They aren't looking at ship logs," Kenji murmured, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the data feed scrolling across the terminal. "They’re tracking the biometric signature of the bio-sample inside you, Dorian. The corporation flagged you as proprietary stolen tech worth more than this entire vessel."Seraphine cursed under her breath, reaching down to steady Dorian as another wave of tremors wracked his frame. "So the port authority thinks we're a coal barge, but the company's elite hunters can still smell us coming a mile away?""Worse," Kenji said, snapping the diagnostic terminal shut with a sharp metallic click. "I saw the deployment logs flash across the port surveillance bypass. They didn't send a cleanup crew. They sent Vance."Dorian raised his head, his pale face slick with cold sweat. "Vance? Who is—""An elite corporate tracker," Kenji cut him off, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch. "The kind of man they send when they want a targe
Crossing the Line
Chapter 26: Crossing the Line"Got it," Kenji hissed, his fingers hammering the final sequence into the diagnostic terminal as a stream of green text cascaded down the cracked screen. "Port authority logs are looping our transponder ghost-signal with a civilian coal barge three miles off our stern. We’re officially invisible.""And the corporate bounty files?" Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck. "Are we still flagged as missing assets, or did your little analog trick buy us an actual clean slate?""We’re clean on the port registries," Kenji replied, yanking the copper tap wire free and coiling it with sharp, practiced jerks. "As far as the maritime authorities know, the Iron Gander is carrying five hundred tons of low-grade anthracite and nothing else. But the corporation isn't relying on public registries anymore."Dorian shifted uncomfortably against the crate, his hands trembling as he pulled his jacket tighter around h

Chapter 25: The Ghost in the FrequenciesKenji pulled the analog tap wire tight, wrapping the copper thread around the battered diagnostic terminal resting on the rusted oil drum. Sparks hissed into the damp air of the freighter’s lower hold, casting fleeting orange shadows across the walls of stacked cargo crates."Keep that light steady, Seraphine," Kenji muttered, his fingers flying across the makeshift keyboard with practiced precision. "If I drop this connection before the handshaking protocol locks in, the port authority's digital tripwire will trace us straight back to this bilge."Seraphine adjusted the tactical flashlight clamped between her teeth, her hands busy securing the auxiliary power cell to Dorian’s shivering shoulder. "If you don't hurry up, your precious tripwire won't matter because the corporate cleanup crew will already be boarding us," she hissed, her voice muffled around the metal casing.Dorian sat slumped against a wooden crate, his breathing shallow and err
