The lights in the penthouse office died instantly. A heavy click echoed through the room, followed by the low hum of the backup generator.
Suddenly, red emergency lights flashed on. They bathed the luxury suite in a bloody, pulsing glow. The shadows in the corners grew long and twisted.
Jax jumped back. His confident smile vanished. "What did you do, Ronan?" he shouted. His voice cracked a little.
Ronan stood by the window. He did not move. He did not blink. The red light washed over his face, but he looked like a statue made of ice. He looked down at the street below.
"Listen," Ronan said softly.
From far away, the sound grew louder. Wail. Wail. Wail.
Sirens. Many of them.
Jax let out a nervous laugh. He adjusted his expensive tie, trying to look brave. "You hear that? That is for you, little brother. I told you. You lost. They are coming to take you away for fraud."
Ronan turned slowly. He put his hands in his pockets. He looked relaxed. "Are they?"
Elena was sitting at the heavy oak desk. She was typing furiously on Jax’s laptop. Her face was illuminated by the white screen. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead.
"Jax," Elena whispered. Her voice trembled.
"Not now, Elena! I’m watching Ronan cry," Jax sneered.
"Jax!" she screamed. She stood up, knocking the chair over. "The money! The offshore accounts! Look!"
Jax ran to the desk. He pushed Elena aside and stared at the screen. His eyes went wide. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The screen showed a bank transfer history.
Status: COMPLETE.
Balance: $0.00.
"Where is it?" Jax whispered. He hit the refresh button. Once. Twice. "Where is the money?"
"It is currently sitting in a frozen evidence account," Ronan said. His voice was calm, contrasting with the chaos in the room. "The FBI tracks digital theft very well when you give them the right IP addresses."
Jax spun around. His face was red with rage. He lunged at Ronan, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "You stole it back! That is my money!"
Ronan did not fight back. He simply looked at Jax’s hands. "It was never your money. It belonged to the company. And now, the authorities know exactly who moved it."
Below them, the sirens stopped. Tires screeched against the pavement. Car doors slammed shut.
Elena looked from the empty laptop screen to the window. She saw the blue and red lights dancing on the ceiling. She realized the truth. The game was over. The money was gone. Jax was finished.
She made her choice.
Elena rushed forward. She shoved Jax hard. He stumbled back, surprised by her strength.
"Get away from him!" she yelled at Jax. Then, she turned to Ronan. Her eyes filled with instant, big tears. Her lip quivered. She reached out to touch Ronan’s chest, her fingers trembling.
"Ronan, baby, please," she sobbed. "I was manipulated! It was him! Jax made me do it. I was so scared. I only wanted to help you."
She tried to hug him, to bury her face in his neck like she used to do.
Ronan took one step back.
Elena almost fell. She looked up at him, shocked. She waited for him to get angry. She waited for him to yell.
But Ronan looked at her with zero emotion. There was no love in his eyes. There was no hate. There was only nothing. It was like looking at a stranger.
"Ronan?" she whispered.
"I filed for divorce this morning," Ronan said. His tone was flat, like he was reading a grocery list. "My lawyers sent the papers an hour ago. And since Lumina was built on stolen assets, the prenup is void. You get nothing. No house. No cars. No alimony."
Elena’s jaw dropped. The sobbing stopped instantly. "You... you can't."
"I can. And I did." Ronan checked his watch. "Right about... now."
CRASH.
The double doors to the office burst open.
Men in tactical gear stormed into the room. "Police! Hands where we can see them!"
Jax raised his hands, shaking violently. Elena backed into the wall, her makeup running down her face.
But the police did not come alone. Two officers dragged a man into the room. He was wearing a dark hoodie, and his hands were cuffed behind his back. He had a bruise on his cheek and looked terrified.
Ronan nodded at the man. "Hello, Marcus."
Jax gasped. He recognized the man. It was the hitman he had hired to kill Ronan.
The police captain stepped forward. He looked at the man in cuffs. "Identify them."
The hitman was sweating. He knew he was caught. He knew Ronan had tracked him to the lobby and trapped him there until the police arrived. He wanted a deal. He wanted less prison time.
The hitman lifted his head. He looked straight at the trembling couple. He shouted loud and clear. "Them! It was them! They paid me!"
The hitman pointed a shaking finger directly at Jax and Elena. "They paid me ten thousand to kill him! I have the text messages! I have the recordings!"
An officer stepped toward Jax, pulling a pair of silver handcuffs from his belt. Another officer moved toward Elena.
Ronan turned his back on them. He walked to the window and looked out at the city lights. He took a deep breath. For the first time in years, the air felt clean.
