Jane led Jett to her office and when they got there, she shut the door silently behind them.

“Your files said you were sent beyond the walls,” she said in an arrogant tone. “It is surprising you had enough to bribe the gate guardians. Well. It isn't unheard of,” she said.

Jett was growing tired of the rants. “Is there a reason you called me here?” he demanded.

“Are you talking back to me?” Jane replied with a stern tone.

“I have lots of work to do. If there isn't any reason for me to be here, please don't delay me. I don't have time for small talks.”

Jane was taken aback by Jett’s brazen nature. “Are you delirious?” she began, standing up from her chair.

Jett sighed. “Alright, let me explain things to you. In the way you might understand, cause you are apparently dumber than you appear.” Jett began. “I work for the company and you are my supervisor. It doesn't give you the right to lord over me. Maybe there was a time I allowed it, but that time is gone. If you overstep your boundaries, by so much as an inch. I will slice off your feet.”

Jett didn't wait to check her reaction, he shoved her out of the way and stepped out. He shoved his hand in his pocket and headed back to his cubicle with a smile on his face.

That was one of the most relieving moments ever. He realized the others had been secretly listening to their conversation and they all were glaring at him with a new expression. Fear, awe, respect.

The system flashed in his face.

|||Mission Matrix|||

[Mission : Improve your office reputation and become a symbol of fear and respect; Successful!]

[Mission Reward: x1 Gem of Armament!]

He really needed to learn what this system is all about and since he was currently not doing anything much at work. He decided to go into the restroom to get himself familiar with some details.

He pushed open the door and then stood at the sink. “I really need a full explanation on what this system is and how it helps me. I don't understand what a Gem of Armament is or how I am supposed to forge a metal or…?” he shook his head.

“*The sovereign system exists only for you or your bloodline and it has been passed down from father to son over generations. It is one of the oldest sources of power. It has been before the collapse of the world, way before the men of iron.*” the system hummed in his head.

“Wait, bloodline?” he blurted. Jett didn't know who his real parents were, he had always been an orphan and he never really cared about their identity.

“*The Sovereign system helps you nurture your internal abilities but can only be activated after you have died. To be a sovereign, you have to transcend the flesh.*”

Jett couldn't quite understand that one, but the system continued anyway. “*As for the rewards you get from the mission. These are items used or created by previous owners of this system to help every scion move forward. They are forged within the void of history and handed to you by your ancestors. However, you have to prove yourself worthy to use them!*” the system paused.

“If you want information on any specific item, click on it and you will get basic information about it, or you could ask me directly.”

Jett smiled. He decided to check the system, so he summoned the interface. A push of the restroom’s door distracted him. He glanced up and came face to face with Hansel.

“Oh, the rumors are not unfounded,” he chuckled softly. “You are really alive!”

Jett’s heart could almost jump out of his mouth. This man had made him believe he was worse than an animal. He treated him like vermin.

“What, are you not happy to see me?” Hansel laughed.

Jett, for the first time in his life, responded to Hansel. “I am happy to see you.” he said simply and began to walk past the man.

Hansel pulled him back immediately. “Now where do you think you are going?”

Jett looked Hansel straight in the eye. “Going to lock the door,” he said before yanking his arm away from his oppressor.

Hanself frowned. He was a little confused. Jett ignored him, shut the toilet’s door then locked it from the inside.

“System, give me his profile.” Jett muttered under his breath as a screen flashed in front of him.

|||Subject Profile|||

[Name: Hansel Halwart

[Age: 25]

[Species: Talented Human]

[Class: D]

[Type: Reaper]

[Archetype:???]

Jett inhaled, a little bit of fear creeping into his heart. Unlike the men he’d fought at the office floor, Hansel was an actual Reaper. Even though he was of the lowest class, it didn't matter.

Even with his increased physical stats, he didn't think he was on the level of a reaper. However, Jett would rather die than back down from this fight.

“What are you up to?” Hansel chuckled. “You have a look of defiance in your eyes. It is good, it would be an honor to watch you break over and over again.” He smiled.

“You…” Jett was almost growling. “I will make you feel remorse for your actions today. You made my life horrible, painful. I wish I could put you through all that you did to me, but that won't happen, so beating you into a bloody pulp will have to suffice.”

Hansel laughed heartily. “Your records were sent from the hospital, so I know you found a way to bribe yourself out of the junkyard. I am surprised that a floor rat had enough credits to even eat.” He stepped forward, his face getting serious. “Get on your knees now and beg me…” he paused. “No… you should kiss my feet and lick my boots. Maybe then I will consider forgiving you.”

Jett paused for a while and crouched, his motion felt like he was going to kneel so Hansel edged him on. “Yes, kneel and be a good boy. You have no need for such bravado…” he paused however when Jett took a stance instead.

“Oh… you really want to…” he couldn't complete his sentence because Jett was already moving towards him.

Jett had no time for discussion, he threw multiple punches at Hansel which was evaded easily.

Hansel smiled and then threw his own punch, it caught Jett square in the jaw. If he was still a normal human, it would have broken the cartilage but it only managed to make him a bit delirious.

Hansel followed up with finesse and impeccable technique. Jett realized he couldn't take on this man with punches, he was far better at fighting than he was.

So he dove at him instead and used his body weight to push him into the ceramic sink. It gave way from their impact and both of them were sprawled on the floor.

Hansel hadn't expected such a tactic so he was dazed, Jett on the other hand got up immediately, picking up a broken sink, he smashed it directly against the man’s head.

“Oh, motherfu…” Hansel cursed, spitting blood.

Handel got up immediately and then smiled at Jett. “Now you have gone and done it.” He dipped his hand in his pocket and brought out a pill.

Jett frowned. “What the hell is that?” he asked.

“*That is a surge capsule, it could elevate the strength of a D tier to a C tier.” the system hummed in his head.

“Ah.” Jett yelled. “How do I win this?” he asked.

The system hummed. “You have two options. You can summon your attendant to help, your odds will increase to a two against one, or you could forge a weapon with your forge metal and the spider mech leg in your inventory!”

Jett frowned, he didn't want to reveal that he had abilities to anyone yet, so summoning his attendant would be too much. A weapon however could help him in the fight.

“Forge the weapon!” he ordered as Hansel downed the pill.

Hansel’s eyes emitted a faint glow and then he attacked Jett. His speed and strength seemed to have quadrupled.

He got punched and tossed around. While that was happening, a screen flashed in Jett’s face.

[Weapon Forge: x1 Forge Metal + x1 SpiderMech Leg = x1 Red Dagger]

[Timer: 01:45]

He had to survive for two minutes. “Damn!” he cursed under his breath. Instead of trying to fight Hansel head on, he started to evade him.

“Oh, now you run, you rat!” Hansel began. “You should have stayed in your place but you decided to overstep your boundaries. I am going to make you wish you had died outside these walls.” he attacked but Jett dodged.

In a few seconds, Jett made a mistake and he got cornered. “Nowhere to run, rat!” a well placed punch knocked the wind from his stomach.

He couched on the floor, kneeling down, blood dripping from his mouth. “Oh, yes. This is it, isn't it? The extent of your power.” Hansel held Jett’s head. “Little rat, I feel sorry for you.” He slapped Jett hard across the cheeks.

“Now, like I said earlier, lick my boots.” Hansel said, forcing his head down.

Jett’s face was inches away from touching the boot when suddenly grabbed Hansel’s arm.

“I refuse to yield!” He yanked his head back, shoving Hansel away.

The Reaper staggered once as Jett stretched his hands out and a weapon materialized from it.

The system flashed in his face but Jett swiped it away, he had no time to read anything. So it made an audio conversation. “*Your physical stats have increased with your Red dagger, you will be able to gain more from it, if you give it a name!*”

Jett started to circle Hansel whose smirk hadn't left his face. “Oh, you managed to get your hands on some low grade artifact.” He chuckled softly. “You think that makes a difference between a pathetic vermin like you and me? It doesn't, no amount of trash will make you worth me!”

“Trash right?” Jett chuckled. Then with a mental note, he gave the dagger a name. “Trash!”

Jett felt himself get stronger so when Hansel lunged at him, he twisted his body easily and then swung his dagger. A small shockwave escaped from it and the impact sent Hansel flying through the walls.

“Trash, huh? You are the only one here who is trash!” Jett began to walk slowly towards Hansel. “You are a failure to your own family, that is why you are tucked away in this back corner…”

Hansel struggled to stand up and dashed towards Jett with a punch but the latter evaded easily, smacking him to the wall with a swing of Trash. “You are a vermin, a bitter man who would pick on the lowest of the low, stuck to watch your elder brothers become the light while you are a shadow tucked into a corner of this world.”

Hansel coughed as Jett dragged him towards the unbroken sink. He opened the tap, then forced his head into the gushing water. “Do you remember this? Do you!!” He yelled. “I could snap your neck right now…”

“You wouldn't dare, do you know who my father is?” Hansel coughed after he was held up.

Jett returned his head into the water. “What if I told you I can make you powerful?” he whispered into Hansel's ear, dropping him to the ground.

“What are you saying, you don't understand what power is?” Hansel chuckled.

Jett smiled. A plan had already formed in his head. “Scron, come out!”

Numerous sparks of light appeared in the small restroom and Jett’s attendant appeared beside him.

“What the hell?” Hansel spoke with fear written on his face

Jett watched the ruins and said nothing. Then the first group came stumbling through the eastern gap yelling in panic. Jett’s first thought was that they were being chased by those filthy rats or the wolves. So they rushed out to meet them, ready to fight mindless beasts. There were nine of them, and two of them were wounded limping off the shoulders of others and frantically trying to match the speed of the others. Their leader was a tall girl with a split lip and maniacal eyes."Men of Iron," she said before anyone asked. "They are coming for us." She looked back at the gap they'd come through. "They were right behind us."“Hey, calm down. Speak to me! Men of Iron

The howling woke them all at once. It was quite obvious for the quiet atmosphere of the wasteland.Jett was on his feet before he was fully conscious, he still remembered the rat they’d fought. Around him the camp scrambled upright and chaos almost ensued, but they were all Talent users in their own right, so they managed to calm down. The wolves were already at the edge of the camp, they could see glowing eyes piercing through the darkness ahead of them. They were large, low to the ground, with jagged spines running the length of their backs like broken glass fused into flesh. Their breath came out wrong, yellowish, drifting into the air with sickening cracks.Anoma stepped forward before anyone else moved. "Stay back," he said. "All of you." Everyone got ready but they all stood back. Jett wondered why these high class students submitted naturally to Anoma. The first wolf came in fast and Anoma hit it with something invisible. The wolf's charge broke apart mid-stride, its own momen

  • Chapter Twenty One: Mischief

The second rat came through the wall, there was an open door but it decided to come through a metal plate, tearing it open with ease.It was the size of a large dog, both heads low and swinging independently. One head faced one person. The thing had talons instead of claws with a yellowish slimy liquid secreting from it. It burned a hole in the metal floor of the caravan. Exuding steam as metal shrunk back from it."*Oh my, you will be the first sovereign to die as a scion and get killed by a rat.*” Heron cuckled in his head. “*I hope you see the corrosive liquid that will melt you with a single touch?*”"I can see that," Jett said with laboured breath. He's seen a Titanic robot, a spider like one. He had been chased by scraps of metal. Hell, he's fought killer machines but when he saw this rat, he wished he'd died when Monica shot him.The rat's right head opened its mouth and hissed, a sound like steam escaping a pipe, and Jett felt his body do something it hadn't done in a while.

Jett gritted his teeth so hard his jaw ached. Zach was standing twenty meters away just staring. It was like his sin had woken up, and that was true. The last time they saw each other, Jett had taken a bullet to the head.He held the stare for three more seconds. Then he turned and walked away."Jett." Red caught up beside him. "What just happened? Who was that?""Someone I thought I knew," Jett said.Red glanced back once. "He looked like he'd seen a ghost." Jett kept walking and Red didn't push. They walked the rest of the path back to the Hanging House in silence. The next few weeks that followed settled into rhythm. Classes with Madam Cors and the other teachers, then combat sessions with Orz.They were also getting to know the members of the Hanging House better. Jett learned that Itt had a habit of reading while walking and that Ezekiel, the red haired boy who'd dismissed him on the first night, was genuinely funny when he wasn't performing indifference. Orz didn't speak immediately. He assessed them with a grin while they arranged themselves into a rough line without being told. The man had a gravity to him that made instructions feel redundant. He walked the length of the line slowly, hands behind his back. "I have been watching all of you since you arrived." he said finally. “I put you next to the people you are unfamiliar with or have declared enmity towards." He stopped at the center of the line. "The purpose of today's examination was not to test your individual ability. It was to test whether you understood the most basic principle of survival." He let that land. The rest of the day passed in the rhythm Heron had carved out for him over the past weeks. Sprint intervals through the outer courtyard until he is breathing like a dog. Then meditation and energy control. Apparently Heron didn't like holding his hand for everything, so he needed to train his body and his energy flow."*Faster,*" Heron said, for what felt like the fortieth time."I am going as fast as I can go," Jett replied, collapsing against the courtyard wall."*That is the problem.*"He didn't have the breath to argue with her.By evening the Hanging House had transformed itself into a party. Someone had dragged furniture into the courtyard. Someone else had found drinks from somewhere. The multi-colored lights from the common room bled out through the open door and scattered across the overgrown stone.Itt found him and Red near the fountain and handed them both a drink, she offered them a small smile and Jett noted that there was a little mischief to it."Welcome to the house,
