“Frederick, you came!” Belinda practically squealed as she opened the door.
Standing at the doorway was Frederick Hall. He wasn’t particularly tall, but his sharp jawline, high cheekbones and blue eyes made up for the lack of height. His tailored black suit complimented his lean build and the air was filled with a faint whiff of his expensive cologne. “Mrs. Clark,” Frederick greeted with a charming smile. “It’s nice to see you after such a long time. Thank you for inviting me.” “Oh, don’t be so formal,” Belinda waved him off with a giggle as she ushered him inside. “You’re welcome here anytime. And please…call me Belinda.” “Noted,” Frederick nodded politely and stepped into the room like he owned the place. “Frederick!” Jarod jumped up from the couch as if he had just spotted his favorite celebrity. “Man, what a surprise!” Frederick mirrored Jarod’s expression as he dapped him up and gave him a once over. “Jarod. You’ve grown so much since I last saw you.” “Of course,” Jarrod puffed out his chest with a proud smirk and flexed his muscles that were not half as impressive as he thought they were. “Gotta stay in shape for the beautiful ladies.” Before Jarod could ramble about his new gym membership and workout routine, Belinda cut in. “You two can catch up later. Frederick, you shouldn’t keep the birthday girl waiting.” “Ah, yes,” Frederick said smoothly and his eyes instantly scanned the room for Katie. The moment he spotted her, his face lit up like a Christmas tree and he strode towards her with two gift bags in his hands. “You are even more beautiful than I remember. Happy birthday, Katie,” he let out a pearly white smile and extended the gift bags to her. “I got them for you.” Katie’s gaze instinctively flicked to Tyler who stood stiffly by the wall, watching them intently. Guilt overtook her, still it didn’t stop her from reverting her gaze back to Frederick and accepting the bags from him. “Thank you,” she gave him a tightlipped smile, then lowered her head to peek inside the first gift bag as curiosity got the better of her. Her eyes widened the moment she saw what was in it. “Oh my god…” she gasped as she pulled out a sleek looking Canon HD camera that put Tyler’s gift to complete shame. Her hands shook with excitement as she inspected it. It was brand new and beautiful. The exact type she had always wanted. “How…how did you know?” She whispered in amazement. “That’s a secret,” Frederick winked at her with a proud grin. “If you think you like this gift, then you’ll love the next one. Check the second bag.” Katie’s heart pounded in anticipation as she carefully placed the camera back into the first bag and reached for the second one. She dipped her hand inside and her fingers brushed against a glossy surface. The moment she pulled it out, she squealed like a child that had just been gifted their favorite candy. Staring back at her was a Vogue limited edition magazine autographed by none other than Alicia Rowe. Popular Supermodel, and her idol. “No way,” she breathed. “I remembered how much you admire Alicia, so I had her sign it just for you,” Frederick explained as though he could read the questions in her mind. Katie’s eyes glistened as she hugged the magazine to her chest. “I…don’t even know what to say, Frederick. This means a lot to me. Thank you.” Belinda clasped her hands together with a bright smile on her face. “See, Katie? Look at how thoughtful Frederick is. Look at the quality of his gifts, not that junk over there,” she pointed distastefully toward Tyler’s broken camera gift on the floor. “He is the kind of man you should be with, not that…good for nothing delivery boy.” Belinda’s words cut Tyler deeply and his fists tightened at his sides, but he held his tongue. What hurt him more was seeing another man shower gifts on his wife. Katie shifted uncomfortably at her mother’s comments, and took a step back from Frederick. “Mom… don’t say that. Tyler is still my husband, and I’m really grateful for Frederick’s gifts, but he’s only going to be a friend.” Frederick's smile faltered. Katie’s words had bruised his ego, and to heal it, he quickly directed his frustration at Tyler. “Katie, this loser isn’t fit to be your husband,” He crinkled his nose in disgust. “He’s nothing but dead weight. I can offer you so much more. Just imagine your face on the cover of Vogue like Alicia. Imagine walking down the runway during Paris and Milan fashion weeks. Leave him and be with me. I’ll turn your dreams of becoming a supermodel into reality.” Belinda nodded eagerly. “Listen to him, Katie. Frederick is the perfect man for you. The perfect son-in-law for this family.” “Yeah, sis…” Jarod chimed in. “I'd really love Frederick to be my brother-in-law. Accept him and dump that trash already.” Katie bit her lip and fiddled nervously with her fingers. “I… I don’t know,” she admitted, her mind now torn between loyalty to Tyler and Frederick’s tempting offer. The hesitation in her tone was enough to make Tyler’s heart sink. “Katie,” he whispered with hurt in his voice. Frederick, sensing an opportunity to ridicule Tyler further, pulled out a chequebook, scribbled on it, and tore out a slip. He then walked up to Tyler and held it out to him with a smug smile. “This is a cheque of one million dollars. Take it and leave Katie for good.”

CHAPTER 10
Katie gasped as her champagne glass slipped from her trembling hand and crashed to the floor. She blinked several times and rubbed her eyes to ensure she wasn’t hallucinating. Frederick became as stiff as a board, while Belinda and Jarod’s faces paled like they had just seen a ghost. “…Tyler?” Katie finally whispered, and the moment she mentioned the name, it spread like wildfire among the guests. “Did Katie just call that man, Tyler? Isn’t that the name of her delivery man ex-husband who disappeared years ago?” Someone whispered. “Impossible. I thought he was dead?” Another person chimed in. The murmurs which grew louder by the second, seemed to snap Frederick out of his shocked state. He stepped forward toward Tyler, directly shielding his sight from Katie, and eyed him with deep resentment. “What the hell are you doing here?” Tyler’s smirk widened, though his eyes remained cold. “What? Is it a crime to see how you all are doing? It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” Frederick's

Wendy hesitated, then repeated herself carefully. “Frederick Hall and Katie Clark are getting engaged today, and I was invited.” Her brows furrowed when she noticed the change in Tyler’s demeanor. “Is there a problem, sir?” Tyler’s fist clenched on his lap, though his expression remained unreadable. “Katie is my ex-wife. And Frederick Hall…” His voice became colder. “…is the man who sent me to prison.” Wendy’s eyes widened as her hand covered her mouth. “Oh my days, sir! I had no idea! Please forgive me, I wouldn’t have agreed to attend if I had known…” “It's fine,” Tyler cut her off with a raise of his finger. “You won’t be attending, but I will.” Wendy blinked in surprise. “You mean…?” Tyler leaned back against the seat, and fixed his gaze on the cityscape outside the tinted window. “It’s time I saw my betrayers’ faces again.” Wendy studied him for a moment before finally nodding. “Understood, sir.” Her eyes raked over his outfit and lingered particularly on the coffee stai
CHAPTER 8
Everyone’s heads turned toward the direction of the voice, and as the woman catwalked forward, the crowd instinctively cleared a path for her. She wore a navy blue corporate gown that hugged her curvy frame and her Christian Louboutin stilettos clicked rhythmically against the floor with every confident step she took. It took only a few seconds of her arrival before several gasps emanated from the onlookers as they recognized who she was. “Wait…isn’t that Wendy Nelson?” someone whispered in awe. “No way…it’s really her! The Vice President of the Continental Group!” another person exclaimed with wide eyes. The murmurs grew louder and a handful of people even rushed to snap pictures of her with their phones. Wendy ignored the noise as she walked straight to Tyler and stopped by his side. For a second, their eyes met, and she gave him a faint nod of acknowledgment, but he subtly shook his head, silently telling her to act like she didn’t know him. She understood his message im
CHAPTER 7
The thief stiffened at Tyler’s words and his eyes flickered from the woman he had stolen the bracelet from back to Tyler. “Return what?” He furrowed his brows in feigned confusion. “The bracelet you just stole.” Tyler replied, his voice flat and his expression stoic. The thief chuckled and gave Tyler a condescending once over. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, punk. You must be hallucinating from all that cheap weed you smoke.” Then he stepped closer until he was within Tyler’s earshot, and his voice dropped to a threatening whisper. “Stop trying to play the hero. Act like you saw nothing before you regret it.” He flashed a yellow-toothed grin he thought looked intimidating and tried to brush past Tyler again, but Tyler placed a firm hand on his chest to stop him. “Your threats mean nothing to me,” Tyler said coldly. “This is your last chance. Return what you stole.” The thief’s eyes dropped to Tyler’s hand on his chest and his eyes glinted with devious mischief. “You’r

Tyler steadied himself and was filled with guilt as he stared at the brown stains quickly spreading across the lady’s white coat. “I’m sorry.” He apologized at once. “Are you alright?” The lady’s head snapped up to him and her eyes narrowed into a glare that could melt a glacier. She looked to be in her early twenties and was pretty with long brown hair and delicate features which were enhanced with a bit of makeup. Her expression at that moment was nothing short of pure outrage. “You idiot!” she spat in a voice filled with disdain. “Do I look alright? My coat…God my boots! They’re ruined because of you!” Tyler ignored her harsh tone and maintained his calm demeanor as he took out his phone. “I’m really sorry for bumping into you. Give me your account details and I’ll pay for the replacements.” The lady eyed Tyler from head to toe and her lips pursed in contempt. “You?” She scoffed with a mocking laugh and gestured gloatingly at her entire outfit. “Do you even know how much t
CHAPTER 5
Tyler took the pen with his shoulders hunched in defeat, and his chest tightened as he stared down at the divorce papers. His grip on the pen trembled and he was close to backing out, but then his gaze darted to the lady. The blistering fear in her eyes as they fixated on the knife pressed against her throat, was all it took to break the last shred of his willpower. Clenching his jaw so tightly a headache began to form, he scribbled his signature above the dotted line provided on the paper. “There,” he spat when he finished. “I’ve done what you wanted. Now let her go.” “Finally!” Frederick clapped as his triumphant laughter echoed round the warehouse. “I knew you’d crumble. You really are a weak little loser.” The veins on Tyler’s face and neck bulged as he struggled to hold back his anger. “Let. Her. Go.” Frederick raised both his hands in mock surrender as his laughter subsided into a grin. “Relax. I am a man of my word after all.” “Drop the little heroine off somewher
