The floor burst open.

Concrete and metal rods broke into pieces as a jagged hole tore through the middle of the cyber-cafe. The air smelled like copper and burnt hair. Ronan didn't waste time thinking about what was happening. His body moved on instinct.

He grabbed Elias in mid-air. Rolled behind a big server rack just as a wave of superheated energy swept through the room. Where the energy touched the walls, the steel and stone didn't just break; they dissolved into a swirling mist.

Get up! Ronan shouted, grabbing Elias and pulling him toward the door.

What the hell is that? Elias screamed, staring at the center of the room. The hole was getting bigger, and a huge metallic claw was. An arm belonging to something larger than a man. Was clawing its way into this reality.

It's an Executor Ronan spat, pushing Elias through the metal door into the alleyway. Don't look back! Run!

The alley was a maze of trash and flickering neon lights. Ronan sprinted, his boots splashing through puddles, his eyes scanning every shadow. The Executor wasn't a monster; it was an enforcer of the Chrono Covenant, a group that pruned timelines that strayed too far from the path. By saving Elias and hunting his betrayers, Ronan had triggered a system-wide purge.

Behind them, the cyber-cafe vanished. There was no explosion, a silent implosion as the reality in the building collapsed into the void. The sound that followed was like tectonic plates being ripped apart.

Ronan ducked behind a dumpster as a pulse of gravity slammed into the alley. Brick walls buckled. The Executor had fully appeared. It stood seven feet tall, its body a fusion of shifting plates and humming violet veins. It didn't have a face, only a single vertical slit glowing with a cold, judging light.

It wasn't hunting by sight. It was hunting by signature.

Ronan reached for the rifle he had recovered from the motel, but his fingers brushed against something else. A small heavy object he had pocketed from the cyber-cafes' emergency supply kit. A localized magnetic pulse generator.

He looked at Elias, who was cowering behind a stack of crates. Ronan grabbed Elias's shoulder, forcing him to look up.

Listen to me, Ronan commanded, his voice sharp. I need you to bypass the power grid in this block. Overload the transformers in the alley.

What? You want to blow the grid? We'll be sitting ducks!

If we don't, that thing will track my location through the city's power signatures Ronan said, shoving the pulse generator into Eliass hands. Do it now. We're both dead in ten seconds.

Elias hesitated, his eyes wide, then he. Dived for a utility box on the brick wall.

Ronan stood up, drawing the rifle. He didn't hide. He stepped directly into the center of the alley, making himself the only point of interest in the Executor's field of vision.

Hey! Over here!

The Executor's head snapped toward him, the slit widening. A psychic pressure hammered against Ronan's skull, a sensation of cold and crushing weight.

It raised a limb, the metal glowing with that same sickly violet energy and began to glide toward him with unnerving speed.

Ronan didn't retreat. He waited until the creature was twenty feet away, his special forces instincts calculating the distance and timing.

The creature roared. A sound like metal scraping on glass. And leaped.

Ronan dropped his rifle. Threw himself flat to the ground.

A massive surge of electricity arced through the sky as Elias successfully triggered the overload. The transformers in the alley detonated in a blinding flash of white light, and the magnetic pulse generator flared to life, creating a localized field of extreme electromagnetic interference.

The Executor, mid-air and composed of dimensional energy, was caught directly in the feedback loop.

The creature's body violently convulsed. The plates tore themselves apart as the magnetic field scrambled its anchor to this reality. It shrieked. A distorted sound that shattered every window in the alley. Before it imploded, collapsing inward on itself until it was nothing but a tiny glowing spark of purple ash that flickered and died.

Ronan lay in the mud panting, the smell of ozone clinging to his skin.

He didn't move for a time. The alley was dark save for the flicker of dying streetlights.

Elias crawled out from behind the crates, his hands trembling violently. Is it... Is it gone?

For now, Ronan said, standing up and dusting himself off. They'll send another.. They'll keep sending them until the timeline is corrected or I'm dead.

He walked over to where the Executor had vanished. In the mud lay a single pulsating shard. A piece of the creature's armor that hadn't fully dissipated.

Ronan picked it up. It felt impossibly heavy. Vibrated with a faint rhythmic heat.

A holographic prompt appeared before his eyes with a stark warning.

Warning: Possession of Executor technology constitutes a Class-Alpha violation of the pact. The Chrono Covenant has marked you for eradication.

Ronan closed his fist around the shard, his knuckles white. Let them come.

He turned to Elias. We're going to the Blackwood Silo. Tonight. We don't have the luxury of time anymore.

Elias stood up, looking at the city skyline, which was now flickering with the unnatural light of unstable dimensional rifts.

Ronan, he whispered, looking at the destruction of the cyber-cafe. You really are going to war with the world, aren't you?

Ronan didn't answer. He looked at the countdown on his phone.

Ninety-eight days.

Not with the world, Ronan thought, his eyes hardening as he stepped into the rain. With the people who think they own it.

He began the silent trek toward the mountains, the Executor shard humming in his pocket like a second, darker heartbeat.

The rusted metal speaker on the wall exploded into bright sparks, leaving behind a heavy, ringing silence that pressed painfully against Ronan's eardrums. Then the world went completely sideways. The thick concrete floor beneath the medical depot tilted violently. Massive support columns groaned under sudden stress, long cracks branching across the ceiling like spiderwebs as a terrible, invisible force pulled down from above. It was not a bomb, and it was not an artillery strike from the Vance Group. It was sheer weight. Unnatural, crushing mass settling directly onto the city streets five levels above his head. The upside-down pyramid, the Origin, was grounding itself in the central square of Eastbridge. Ronan was thrown off the examination table, his boots skidding across the hard tile floor. Dust rained down in thick gray curtains, coating his tongue with the taste of dry chalk and old blood. His left arm hung useless at his side, numb from the shoulder down where the gray rot had sunk deep into his muscle. The burn he had inflicted on himself earlier was cracking open again, leaking dark, thick fluid down his sleeve. If he did not reach the underground medical depot soon, the rot

  • Chapter 11: Ash and Iron

Get up, Ronan told himself. The voice in his head was not the system. It was the memories of the special forces commander screaming at Ronan to keep moving. Ronan dropped to his knees. The heavy Vanguard-Class Plasma Rifle fell to the ground, hitting the concrete with a noise. The blood from Leos and Elias' bodies was around him. It had even reached his boots. The leather was warm and sticky with blood. He had done this. Ronan had tried to run from the bad things that were happening, but he had led his brother into danger instead. Clara had helped their enemies by selling them out. Ronan had given them the chance to do it. Ronan reached out. Closed Leo's eyes. They were empty and still. I will burn them Ronan said quietly. I will burn everything to the ground. Make them pay. Ronan felt a pain in his head. He was dizzy. Had to grab his left shoulder. The cuts from the monster were bleeding a lot.
