But as the clock neared midnight, his excitement turned into a hollow silence. Vanessa stumbled in, drunk and careless, not even noticing the effort he had put in. She tossed her purse on the couch, waved him off, and mocked his calls.
“Can you stop calling me all the time? I was at a banquet, making connections, actually contributing to this family,” she snapped, her words dripping with contempt.
