Adrian had planned the perfect anniversary dinner—Vanessa’s favorite dishes, a warm, quiet home, and even time for their daughter, Lily. But as the clock neared midnight, his excitement turned into a hollow silence. Vanessa stumbled in, drunk and careless, not even noticing the effort he had put in. She tossed her purse on the couch, waved him off, and mocked his calls. “Can you stop calling me all the time? I was at a banquet, making connections, actually contributing to this family,” she snapped, her words dripping with contempt. Adrian stayed calm, trying to remind her of the night’s significance. But Vanessa scoffed, mocking the anniversary, humiliating him further. “Everyone asked why I didn’t bring a male companion. I wanted to sink into the floor. Imagine saying, ‘My husband is home babysitting a kid.’ I’d rather say my goldfish ran away!” She continued, bitter and harsh: “If I didn’t get pregnant, I’d never have married you. Lily slows me down, and you… you slow me down the most.” Adrian, silent but composed, finally spoke: “Let’s get a divorce.” Vanessa erupted in rage, smashing the dinner he had prepared, shattering more than just plates. In that moment, Adrian walked away, leaving the chaos behind.

CHAPTER 1

Adrian stood alone in the dining room, staring at the table he had spent the entire evening preparing.

There were several dishes— dishes that he knew Vanessa liked.

Or at least, used to like.

Steam no longer rose from any of them as everything had gone cold.

He checked the clock again.

11:56 p.m.

The silverware gleamed under the warm lights, but the room still felt cold. Too quiet. Too empty for a day that was supposed to mean something.

Adrian let out a soft breath, not quite a sigh. His expression barely shifted, but a faint, wry smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Anniversary dinner for two, and only one person showed up.

He looked down at his phone. Ten missed calls, all from him to the same person.

Not a single reply.

He set the phone down with a calmness that didn’t match the tightness in his chest.

Lily had sat at the table earlier, swinging her legs under her chair, asking when Mommy would come home.

He told her soon, he told her to be patient, he told her it was a special day.

But eventually, she fell asleep beside her homework, and he carried her to bed.

The clock hit midnight and right then, the front door opened.

Vanessa stumbled in, unsteady on her heels. The sound echoed across the room, mismatched with the quiet atmosphere Adrian had kept all night.

She didn’t look at him. Not at first.

Instead, she dropped her designer purse on the couch with a careless flick, then used her arm to balance herself as she kicked off her heels.

The smell of expensive alcohol was strong.

Adrian looked at her, his face unreadable.

“Vanessa,” he whispered, his voice low and controlled, almost tired. “I called you. Several times.”

She rolled her eyes so hard it looked like she could see the ceiling behind her skull.

With an irritated huff, she pushed her hair back, fingers scraping through the strands as if even her own hair annoyed her.

“Adrian, seriously,” she snapped, her voice sharp and impatient. “Can you stop calling me all the time?”

She didn’t even look at him as she spoke, waving her hand in the air like she was shooing away a fly.

“Do you think I’m sitting around doing nothing?” she continued. “I was at a banquet. Working. Making connections. Actually contributing something to this family.”

She let out a cold laugh and grabbed a bottle of water, swallowing it down like she had been talking for hours.

“You have any idea how much pressure I’m under? Meanwhile you’re blowing up my phone like a teenager with a crush.”

He didn’t answer right away. He moved a chair slightly—almost an automatic gesture—before speaking.

“Today is our wedding anniversary,” he said quietly. “Lily waited for you. She stayed up until she couldn’t anymore.”

Vanessa froze for half a second, then scoffed.

“Anniversary?” Vanessa repeated, her eyebrows shooting up as if he had just told her a joke.

“Adrian, really?” She let out a short, humorless laugh. “You’re still hung up on something like that?”

She tossed her purse farther onto the couch and crossed her arms tightly over her chest.

“I have real problems to handle,” she said, her tone dripping with annoyance. “Deadlines, investors, meetings… things that actually matter.”

She shook her head, frustrated. “I’m dealing with huge pressures you know nothing about. And you’re here talking about an anniversary dinner like it’s the end of the world.” she said as her voice grew louder.

He kept his tone steady.

“I thought the Rand family was handling the major tasks,” he said.

It was only a simple statement, but it silenced her more effectively than shouting would have.

Slowly, Vanessa turned to him.

“How do you know about the Rand family?” she asked. Suspicion replaced irritation for a moment. “Who told you?”

Adrian said nothing.

And his silence annoyed her even more.

She gave a mocking laugh.

“Right. You probably heard rumors somewhere. That’s all you ever get—leftover information people whisper around. Yes, the Rand family helped me. And do you know why?”

She stepped closer, her breath heavy with alcohol.

“Because of Charles. Charles  from the Monroe family. Not you.”

She tapped his chest with a single finger.

 “Not. You.”

Adrian didn’t move.

Vanessa smirked. “Do you know how embarrassing it was tonight? Everyone kept asking why I didn’t bring a male companion. Everyone! Do you know how humiliating that was? I wanted to sink into the floor.”

She let out a cold laugh.

“You think I could say, ‘Oh, my husband is staying home watching over a kid’?” Her eyes flashed with mock pity. “Imagine their faces. I’d rather say my goldfish ran away.”

Though her words were cruel, Adrian's expression stayed calm—too calm.

Vanessa continued, her voice more bitter than angry now.

“You shouldn’t forget something. If I didn’t get pregnant—if Lily didn’t happen—I would never have married you. Never. Even if life forced me to choose between you and eating sand. I still wouldn’t have.”

The words probably hurt more than she realized.

Or maybe she fully understood—she just didn’t care.

Adrian looked at her the entire time. No anger. No yelling. Just a slow, icy disappointment settling into his eyes.

He wasn’t looking at his wife anymore. He was looking at someone who had replaced her.

Someone he didn’t recognize.

Vanessa kept going, leaning her hand against the table as she ranted.

“I have dreams, Adrian. Ambitions. And what do I get? A child dragging at my ankles and a husband who contributes nothing. Nothing!” She gestured wildly toward the dishes. “Do you think cooking a few meals makes a man? Do you think it helps me? It makes me look pathetic! People my age are rising to the top, and I’m stuck babysitting a family!”

Her voice grew sharper.

“Lily is a sweet kid, but she slows me down. And you…” She looked him up and down with clear disdain. “You slow me down the most.”

The room fell quiet. A heavy quiet.

Adrian finally spoke.

“Vanessa,” he said softly. “Let’s get a divorce.” The words were calm.

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

She stared at him as if he had insulted the sun. “You? Divorce me? Are you insane?”

Her voice rose again, filled with disbelief.

“You’re the one being irresponsible! You’re running away from the marriage. You think you get to say that? You think you get to decide anything? Don’t you dare—”

But Adrian was already walking away. His steps were measured.

He didn’t shout back. He didn’t turn around. He didn’t argue.

He simply walked toward the bedroom.

Vanessa's voice chased him down the hallway, getting sharper and more chaotic with every second.

But he didn’t respond. His hand reached the bedroom door and he pushed it open.

Behind him, something crashed. A plate.

Then another.

Then another.

Vanessa grabbed every dish he had prepared and hurled them to the ground. Each shatter echoed through the house loudly.

She smashed the entire anniversary dinner. The work he put in. The fragile idea of a celebration.

Adrian stepped inside the bedroom and closed the door behind him.

The sound of breaking porcelain was cut off instantly.
