Chapter 2

The hospital

Klay arrived at the hospital premise and quickly tossed his keys to the security man nearby and dashed in quickly, while the security man Andre parked his car. His wife Kathleen was waiting for him in the lobby with hands akimbo. Upon sighting him from afar she started yelling “where the hell have you been” to Klay who was now embarrassed.

Klay looking at the crowd watching them quickly walked towards her and apologized to her,” sorry there was an issue that required my attention” so I had to attend it before coming here it was very urgent. What happened to her? have you spoken to the doctor?

Kathleen hearing this flared up “required your attention? so my grandmother is now useless or what? Her nostrils became wider as she was ranting. “I didn’t want to marry you because you were broke, I am the one that bought your clothes and provided for the family while you were running around doing house chores with the maid and you dare say that to my face” she continued without caring if they were being watched.

Klay who wasn’t interested in what she was saying left her in the lobby and walked to the ward her grandmother was kept. Kathleen flabbergasted by the sudden change in his behavior quickly went after him and caught up to him when he entered the hospital room and continued screaming and ranting at the top of her voice.

The nurse checking on Klay’s grandmother-in-law saw him and assured him she will get fine quickly, Kathleen strutted in noisily and saw the exchange between them quickly slapped Klay, and accused him of flirting in front of her grandmother who was sick.

“Is that how vain you are?  even in front of a sick old woman you are trying to get your neck score, you are very wicked and useless.” Kathleen quickly told the nurse to get lost while she tried explaining what happened.

Kathleen wasn’t used to people not obeying her first order, so she yelled again ‘’ please get the hell out of here before I drag you by your hair, she said angrily drawing the attention of a doctor in another room, who quickly came in and tried shushing her, and that simply made matters worse.

“Do you know who I am, do you want to be sacked today?” she roared towards doctor Arshad who attempted to calm her down but couldn’t, he retreated a bit. Dr. Arshad stepped back and looked at the patient’s chart on the wall quickly and saw her name Mrs. camellia Burgess he knew he was in a tough situation and didn’t want to further infuriate the lady any more than she was already.

Dr. Arshad's mind quickly flashed when he saw the name, of course, everybody knew them in the state because they were very wealthy if not in the top ten in the country and had lots connections that could end his career in an instant,” shit this dumb bitch can snap her fingers and I’ll be out of a job” he said to himself.

“Sorry ma,” he blurted out and laid the flimsiest excuse ever “I thought it was a patient having a breakdown and quickly excused himself out of the room.”

Kathleen now looking at Klay with disgust and quickly tossed him the bag of fruits she got for her grandmother without warning and watched it hit his abdomen which made him yelp and sprawled on the floor.” Seeing this she giggled, she found fun in making Klay’s life miserable.

“Is there anything you are good at?” she said looking at him remember the day she was forced to marry him by her father who wanted to secure a good business deal and it resulted in him selling his daughter off. From the first day she hated Klay, she had a problem with every bit of him, especially his last name Green, she wouldn’t even adopt it as she thought it sounded stupid.

Klay was a very calm and calculated person didn’t betray his true feelings, he picked himself up and carried the bag of fruits to the counter near Kathleen's grandmother and found a clean ceramic bowl there that was empty.

He carried it to the sink beside the water dispenser and rinsed the bowl thoroughly before placing the apples she bought in it then sat down on a chair resting against the wall and sank into his thoughts. He found himself thinking about the Oldman he had saved in the cemetery and “what he meant by when it’s time we would see each other again “to the girl to who he didn’t even bother to ask her name and puzzled by what she meant by “she might help him later”, who was she he didn’t know.

Klay! Klay! Kathleen called his name, twice in quick succession hearing no reply she quickly walked up to him and found him deep in thoughts, instead of tapping him gently like a normal person would she grabbed the transparent flower vase and pulled out the lilies in it and poured Klay the water on his face, bringing him back to the physical world rather quickly.

Klay sprang up quickly looking at his now wet clothes wanted to charge at her and deal with her but he remembered why he have been putting up his physical and emotional abuse for good three years, he needed them; rather than the family name to grow, to be able to enter places for those with a reputation to find justice for his parents.

Seeing how he jumped up still in shock, she laughed at the spectacle while sitting on her chair. Sulking he stood up and went towards Kathleen and reported to her like a maid “yes ma”. Kathleen who was amused by this, sternly responded to him while looking at her phone “my family will soon be here and you are not to utter a single word to any of them, even if you are been spoken to or else you shall see a side of me you wouldn’t want “

Klay was amused, he thought to himself “a side of her I wouldn’t want to see, I don’t even want to worry your grinch-looking ass,” while he forced himself from laughing at his joke because it would result to problems that would spoil his plans. He had forgotten to excuse himself out of her sight when Kathleen tried standing up and nearly tripped over him.

“What the hell man! get your useless legs away from the road, or do you want to kill me and take my family wealth” she yelled. Klay looking at her on the ground tried helping her but she blatantly refused his help. Suddenly, the door opened and some people stepped in, they were her family members.

“Kelly, Charles, and Kevin! I didn’t expect to see you here, aren’t you supposed to be in school?” She asked them pretending to search for her earring on the floor. “We were back home early, aunt Renee told us about what happened so we came to cheer grandma up” they replied.

“That’s lovely of you guys, “she said hugging them. Where are your parents looking at them? Knowing that they couldn’t drive halfway through the city to come to the hospital. “They are getting some drugs from the doctor they replied in unison.”

Suddenly the full family came in Kelly’s parents, aunt Renee, Mr. Paul with his wife and their little kids Jules and Barbara, and the rest. They were all greeting each other and sharing hugs while Klay stood in a corner watching them. He was always the odd one out, nobody in the family respected him. they all saw him; “as a clause in a business deal that went sour."

Kelly went to meet Klay was staring at the windows, wishing he could be anywhere but here, and tugged at him, prompting her mother to yells at him; “leave my daughter alone you pervert” the whole room fell silent. Klay just looked and bowed his head in shame and went to another corner, then a strange man walked into the room. Being ostracized was one thing but been called a pervert was another, he looked at Kelly’s mum with some much hate that one might even see it.

Quickly he looked away from her direction, as he noticed she had a really inviting punch able face that was really tempting. Klay knew his ability in boxing and knew that nobody in this room could pose a serious challenge to him even Mr. Paul. Deep down he was a compassionate person, a teddy bear in the body of a giant, he disliked violence and argument while Klay necessarily do not like violence, he can also inflict it in times of need. Hopefully this won’t be one he tried soothing his anger.

Klay now simply moved to the other side of the room and watched them smiling inwardly..
