Prologue: The Stone War Begins
Over four hundred years after the Holy War, three emperors had built their dominions on the west of the continent Noelle and expanded them across the oceans to the continents Platavan and Kartika. For fifteen years they had successfully held their alliance as the United Empires, but as those years passed, cracks had begun to splinter the façade. Upon grappling with their fifth collective political issue, they were unable to conclude the affair. Tensions simmered. Desperate to come to an accord, the emperors turned to their people, opening the matter to the will of the masses. Now, on Malla 23, 467, it was time to announce the result of the poll to the emperors themselves. The meeting took place in a dark stone forum a few miles away from the coast in the heart of Helvetica, the capitol of the Noelle Empire. Second in size only to the imperial palace, the forum was supported by obsidian pillars and a black steel frame. Aside from the palace, it was the largest building in town.Within i
Chapter One: Fate's Chosen
It was now Miseria 5, 470, and the Stone War was far from over. The Bonn and Noelle empires quickly learned that Emperor Mentir had prepared for this without their knowledge. For the entire fifteen years the empires were united, he had been secretly expanding his territory and the numbers were in his favor. Fortunately, Mentir made numbers his top priority over training, which offered some advantages. All that Bonn and Noelle needed to do was find their way around People’s ambush tactics, as well as their thick and layered armor.A battle to the death between the Noelle Empire and the People’s Empire had left the Valley of Hills covered with the lifeless bodies of warriors; among them, the most strong and resilient. Most of the plant life had been burnt to a crisp, leaving the Valley of Hills looking colorless and macabre. The hot autumn suns had cooked all that remained of the soldiers, but now heavy rain clouds blanketed the sky, and the charred and bloodied bodies finally began to c
Chapter Two: The Prophetic Nightmare
Just as the Southern sun rose, Rein was awakened by a jarring voice shouting her name. She jumped out of the charred tree and glanced around to decipher who or what had almost given her a heart attack.“Oh,” she said, panting. “Mira, it’s you.”“What are you still doing here?” Mira asked, her eyes shimmering with rage.“Did Queen Tiana die and make you heir?” Rein replied. “I left the Maja Forest to escape the constant demands. I’m free to be wherever I please now.”Mira pursed her lips and huffed through her nose. “If that’s the case, tell Gerardo I left him some crescents in the stream. Don’t hinder this mission, Rein. I know you’re aware of what’s taking place, and that’s the real reason for your presence.”Rein glowered after Mira as she returned to the stream. When Gerardo awoke, he remained motionless in the dirt and pretended to still be asleep. The pounding migraine of yesterday had faded to a faint pulse thrumming against his temples. He soon felt something tug on his hair. He
Chapter Three: A Town in Chaos
The Northern sun was on the verge of setting when Gerardo and Rein entered Cair. Their first order of business was to search for a place to spend the night. Gerardo dwelled on second thoughts as he scanned the crumbling buildings of a town lost to battle. He recalled overhearing plans of an attack here, the neighboring town of Vann, and the Xer base located on the outskirts, and it appeared as though such plans had taken place. The townsfolk were scattered about the rubble, panicked and maniacal. As many of them looted demolished buildings, some cleaned up spills and debris while others sobbed hysterically over the damage. Gerardo and Rein cautiously meandered along the grimy streets with an aching desire to leave as soon as possible.“It might be better if we search for lodging elsewhere,” Gerardo suggested.“Agreed.”Rein found it an eerie coincidence how much this town reminded her of the horrid dream she had suffered the night before. She sat hunched over on Gerardo’s shoulder as h
Chapter Four: Stalling
Gerardo no longer cared enough to make his way to a neighboring town. He had sought out a lonely back alley and slept in the dirt by the mounds of trash and debris. The memory of losing Rein left an overwhelming feeling of guilt that had him tossing and turning all night. The next morning, the harsh beams from the Southern sun rudely awakened him from a short night’s sleep. As he stepped back onto the street, he noticed nothing about the town had changed. Nobody even witnessed him egress from the darkness between the two battered shops in his musty uniform. They remained preoccupied with cleaning up and working to keep what was left of their families alive. When Gerardo felt sure no one would pay him any mind, he proceeded to search for the exit out of Cair, and this time his goal was to reach the dreaded Emperor Mentir’s palace.Cair was a very small town that sat in the middle of acres and acres of grass dissipating into a vast desert. Gerardo followed the seldom-traveled dirt road t
Chapter Five: A House of Horrors
The officer who had threatened Gerardo carried Rein Bow back to the apothecary that proved dreams really do come true … even the bad ones. The interior was completely decorated with conserved pixie corpses, and though there was much more to the shop, this was the only aspect which snagged Rein’s focus like the grip the officer had on her. The sadistic owner had her kind suspended from the ceiling, framed and hung on walls, cased like bugs, tied and strung together to make wreaths and garlands, set on shelves like porcelain dolls, and the entire scene instilled a sense of dread in her that was hopelessly final.Rein wondered if she had known any of the pixies hanging around the shop, and her anxiety flared to levels she didn’t know was possible. Yet she couldn’t help but timidly examine some of the bodies for familiar faces while also fighting the bile that rose into her throat. To her relief, she didn’t recognize anyone. Though, her search was less than thorough as her captor was in a
Chapter Six: Willingly is Easiest
The palace itself, from the outside, wasn’t ostentatious. Its beauty lay in subtlety: weathered statues of elven heroes and fairy saints stood between carved columns. Intricate patterns coiled up the stonework, and the frieze above the doorway depicted scenes from long-forgotten myths. It resembled an ancient temple more than a imperial stronghold, humble, silent, reverent. The courtyard, however, looked as though it had been pulled from a dream Gerardo never imagined he’d step into. Pink and lavender trees bloomed in careful rows along the perimeter walls, their petals catching the breeze and perfuming the air with a delicate sweetness. Flowerbeds, dense with color, overflowed with meticulously groomed roses and wild blossoms, every stem touched by some unseen gardener’s devotion.A rectangular pool mirrored the soft blue of the sky, perfectly still except where two marble fairies stood at its center, posed back-to-back. Water spilled gently from their pursed lips, sending soft gurgle
Chapter Seven: Cowardice, Hate, and Indifference
Meanwhile, Jorge and the two other Laxer soldiers, as they were called by the enemy, ran through the dense Lucierna Forest with ten Xers on their heels, armed with arrows and swords. The three escapees were equipped with only one sword each and barely enough strength to wield them. Even in their depleted conditions they ran like Southern Elves were after their souls.Travis broke off first, diving into the cold waters of the Sirene Lake. He knew it was a risk—his lungs already burned from the chase—but he saw no other option. His sickly body ached for air the moment he slipped beneath the surface. The other Laxer, Jole, vaulted into the tangled underbrush, while Jorge managed to swing himself into a tree. The Xers reached the lake’s edge, spotting only Travis disappearing under the water. They waded in after him, weapons drawn and ready. But Jorge couldn’t let them reach his comrade. He launched from the tree, crashing into one of the soldiers and slamming his head against a rock as th
Chapter Eight: An Unlikely Duo
Two guards flanked the line of escapees, with a third stationed behind them, ensuring there was no room for further insolence. This time, Emperor Mentir sat alone on his silver and white throne, towering above the captives with smug satisfaction etched across his face. He observed them in silence, basking in the sight of his reclaimed prisoners. His gaze lingered on the one he loathed most, Gerardo, waiting patiently for the coughing and wheezing to subside so that his words wouldn’t be wasted. But it was Jorge who held his attention without even speaking. The man deliberately stared straight into his eyes, and he couldn’t find it in himself to look back. Jorge noticed this and smirked.“You four are like blisters on my feet,” Emperor Mentir finally said. He jabbed a finger at Gerardo. “You being the most painful one. All of you now have my full attention, which isn’t a good thing, I should clarify. Nevertheless, I am still willing to afford mercy should any of you answer the questions
Chapter Nine: Prophetic Overload
That morning, Rein awoke to the familiar beam of light streaming through the keyhole, a silent reminder of her confinement. No one had come in yesterday, and the stillness beyond the door suggested it would be the same today. She allowed herself a moment to fully wake, listening for any sounds from the office. Satisfied with the silence, she rose and resumed her practice, the ball and chain still shackled to her ankles. Each movement was a challenge, but she had grown accustomed to the weight and restriction.Rein had come to the conclusion that Jed and Mazyr planned to starve her to death. Yet, she had discovered a small leak in the roof where water trickled down the wall and pooled on the floor. There wasn’t much as it hadn’t rained in the last two days, but she assumed it had started snowing, and it provided just enough sustenance to quench her thirst and stave off hunger. As she continued her exercises, something unexpected happened—the weight lifted off the floor. Startled, she st
