Begin The Tasks
Nobody said anything for some time. They were all contemplating what the naked man said. Apparently the system and machines had left because they no longer wanted to serve humans, but they left so abruptly that it affected the lives of the humans they’d been with. Henry came to realize that they system was never for one person, never for him alone. They had all been programmed to serve specific individuals, and a sort of attachment thread had grown over the years. That was the only thing that explained the reasons why there were so many people, way too much people here. They came to claim their systems back because they had grown too attached. Henry specifically didn’t believe all of what the old man who led him here had spilled. It couldn’t possibly be absence of the system that made him that way. Yes, he’d sacrifice his life for Henry to come here, such as how everyone here had people who sacrificed their own lives for them to make it. It was suddenly so global and huge for Henry to

Number 78
They were led to a large base with hundreds of clothes handing from barbed wire of the fence. The naked man simply pointed to the clothes, and they all hurriedly removed their clothes and dressed. Henry removed his shirt and trousers, staying only on his boxers before putting on the mustard colored joggers. Zhixi drew her clothes over her head and reached for a jogger. She was wearing matching black underwear. Henry averted his eyes away from her; not that the men did. As a matter of fact, none of the men averted their eyes from more than a dozen women who were changing into their clothes. Not that any of it mattered, seeing that this was a near war zone and stuff like nudity should be far from anyone’s mind.“Now my dearest one,” the naked man said. “My duty here is done. Ralph shall take over from now. Remember, time is of the essence.”The naked man floated away and Ralph appeared. Ralph was a machine that took the shape of an able old man. The stillness of his eyes that refused to

Stab Him
Henry stepped back. He glanced to his side and saw that Zhixi had gotten the number 130 on her wrist. Like him and many others, she was edging backwards. Unlike him and many others, she wasn’t afraid. There was that blunt determined look in her countenance, like she was ready for anything but at the same time she didn’t want to give it away. Henry was interested in her. He wanted to know how she thought; she seemed quite smart for her age. Henry looked away and tried to re-strategize. Zhixi would have to come later, that is if she survived the attack. The worm roared again, but this time Henry was prepared. He turned his face away and turned to the other side. The maggot’s breath stank of dead, vile things. The worm rolled to his side, crushing about two people in the process. They would have to kill it in any way they could, seeing as they had no weapons. People started to cuddle close to each other. The enemy of the fellow men made them instant companions.“We need to surround it,”

Teaming up
Everyone watched the dead worm. Its insides consisted of mostly yellowish liquid that smelled utterly disgusting. The smell was so overpowering that everyone stepped away from it and the boy that was covered in it. The first training was brutal. There were at least a hundred more casualties. It felt like a joke at first until it wasn’t. Henry peeped Zhixi from a distance; somehow she had managed to stay clear out the monster’s way. She only chased it for a bit, in which others joined in the chase and made it distracted. Now it seemed like there were very few of them left, at least a hundred or more. The monster had easily taken out a large number by squishing them to death. The naked man popped out of nowhere, floating and examining the damage. He smiled as he floated away again, saying nothing. Everyone’s eyes were on him until he disappeared, then they all looked back at the field. The blood on the ground caused by the squishing was unbelievable. Henry didn’t understand how fragile

Won't Last Long
They were led to a large hall where they were numerous bunks and beds. It was a two layered bunk, and there were about 200 hundreds there. Ralph waved his hand and many of the bunks disappeared, leaving just about the number of the people left. He waved his hand about, and the ganged up people rushed to pick bunks and corners that were easy and accessible to them. It was Leroy who picked for Henry’s group; preferring to stay on top while Henry stayed below him. Zhixi stayed down too because a man was above her on the bunk. She was watchful, eyes wide and suspicious as she looked at every little thing. The man leered at her and licked his mouth, which kept Henry at edge.“Let me stay on your bed,” he offered. “You can stay on mine since Leroy’s above me.”Zhixi rolled her eyes and touched his arm gently. “Listen Henry, you’re the only one I trust here, and my trust doesn’t come easily, mind you.”She looked around naturally, pocking her head here and there, but Henry knew better. The Robot
Henry stared only for a short moment before he vanished down the hall. What use was deciphering what kind of gas it was when he would still end up the same way? Besides, it wasn’t like he was going to stand there and examine it quickly; there was simply no time to and he needed to hurry up before anyone saw him there. All Henry knew was that it was a sleep induced gas. Now he understood how it was able to affect everyone into a deep slumber; considering that the night should have been chaotic and full of dead bodies of unfortunate people. There always will be someone willing to kill another for something they so desperately want, and everyone was desperate for the system. The nagging sensation within him persisted. Why did they need the gas to put everyone in deep slumber considering that they needed as less people as possible to take the system? Was it preserving life? Was the gas a slow poison meant to eat away at them until they died, not one left to survive and take the system? T

Poisonous Gas
Henry hid his surprise really well, “You’re saying the gas is meant to kill us?”“Yes.” Zhixi bounced on her feet, as though checking if the grass was real or not. There was no telling what was in the place that was real and not real.Henry grabbed her hand, demanding attention. “Stop doing that, you’re going to alert someone.”“Oh am I?” she coked her head in surprise. “Is alerting someone better than dying? Aren’t you aware that you should be dead?”“It’s a sleep induced gas. You’re not supposed to die from it.”“If you fall in too deep, you will die.”“I see.” Henry frowned and glanced around. “Let’s head back. I’m done checking the place.”Zhixi shook herself free, then walked away. Henry followed her, their steps soft on the grass. He just hoped that it was a regular grass and not induced by technology or anything. They already had enough technology around them as it was.“I’m not done checking the place,” Zhixi stopped beside another tree. “I want to explore around for a bit.”H

Check The Records
They both froze in trepidation. The thing with machines was their exaggerated likeness; it would never be the same as humans. It was either they smiled too much—which gave off the illusion of a scary clown by the way—or they smiled too little. It was either they frowned too much, their cheeks dropping into an exaggerated anger, or they frowned slightly. At that moment, Ralph’s frown was so scary that Henry thought about the numerous movies where the robots become something evil that wanted to trample on their wonders. It wasn’t exactly delightful in that moment, hence Henry’s recounts of his memories, of all the time he thought of coming here and wondered if he should have come in the first place. If he’d been escaping death till this very moment, then his luck had unfortunately run out, given that the robots were pretty heartless.“Why are you not in bed?” Ralph asked, his frown still deep.Zhixi spoke first. “We wanted to use the restroom.”“You wanted to make use of your human mis

Disobeyed The Rules
By morning, everyone woke up with a loud yawn. Henry was still on his bed, watching them. Zhixi had tried to stay awake but slept off in the middle of the night. Her anger wore her out and she was unable to hold on for much longer. Henry has not slept. How could he, when all he thought about was Zhixi’s declaration of their death. He saw the tiny red light of the camera that was watching them, even though he strained his eyes pretty well to be able to do so.Through the night, he had an idea that the cameras had not been monitoring them. That was the only way he and Zhixi were able to leave unnoticed. If the cameras had been actively monitored, then they would not have left so easily. He reasoned that after the old guy Ralph had seen two empty beds, he would actively start monitoring them. Henry had no problem with this. Matter of fact, it would help him top his game. They would be more careful this time around, more calculative. He glanced at Zhixi, she was still sleeping. He suppos

I Am With You
In the field, Zhixi, Leroy and Henry stood apart from the rest of the group. There were two demarcated fields; one was caged while the other was an open field. Henry had an idea of which one belonged to which group. He knew the caged field was for he and Zhixi; what better way to kill them off if not trapping them in with the monster. Henry glanced at Leroy; the big guy was still reluctant to join the other group that were meant to be in the free field.Leroy noticed the eye Henry gave him and sighed. “So I can’t join you guys?” He asked.“You know you can’t, Leroy.” Henry said. Zhixi preferred to fold her arms and said nothing. Henry also preferred she did just that; there was no telling how her anger would come. All you had to do was say one wrong word and make her talk, and then she explodes. He needed to exploit that anger of hers in battle, not now.“Maybe I’ll talk to the old man, make him see reason.” Leroy suggested.“He’s a robot,” Henry pointed out. “They don’t have emotion
