Chapter 11
In one of the of the alcoves, David found a desk with a single sheet of ancient paper set out as if on display.“The way is closed. The brothers passed through, the way I will guard. The caves could not sustain us, so they made the ultimate sacrifice, to guard from within the forest of night. May the new fortress stand the test of time.”Damn. This ancient order must have abandoned this cave and opted to live within the fae lands, establishing a foothold there. If they could survive there, they would slowly become like the fae, bound by the same laws, but also subject to the harshest conditions.David quickly looked through the rest of the alcoves for anything useful. In one, he found a shelf with a thick well-preserved tome. He tucked it into his pack and then grabbed a few boards that made up what was left of a bed.He hurried back to the women and found Nyx hovering over Hailey.“You didn’t kill them?” he asked in s

*Steven Harlow POV* About the same time, Steven Harlow:Steven Harlow drove his new company car up the mountain towards the trail head. When that David fellow had said he didn’t have a current house, Steven hadn’t truly believed that he would be living out here in the woods.Jake, the local outdoor guide had been able to give him a general idea of where David could be found. He had no intention however, of traipsing through the woods to find this man. Hopefully he would get the text he sent before driving out here.Steven had to admit, this was a beautiful and scenic drive. He just hoped David wouldn’t be too filthy if he had to give the man a ride. Tonight’s banquet could finally provide a chance to get Sarah out of the company limelight. As he drove around the mountain, a helicopter lifted off and flew towards Perdony, the provincial capital city of Estopia Province. He spotted David, speckled in red blood an

David stood in the shower for a long time, letting the water cleanse him of the blood and dirt from the cave. His torso and back were covered in dark purple and blue bruises and small lacerations. His shoulder and collarbone ached with movement but he grit his teeth and suppressed the pain. There was a sturdy bar on the wall for handicap accessibility and heWhen he got out, there was a thin robe waiting for him on the door and he simply sat on the bed, mind racing though possibilities. The huntsmen were an elite team of soldiers that had worked with him for several years, most holding the rank of Second Lieutenant or above. They were each highly skilled in the ways of war in all environments but what made them truly unique was their knowledge of the fae. While there was little known about the fae in general, the Huntsmen had access to all the stored knowledge in the imperial archives about the fae and were the team responsible for hunting down any that m

“Umm, sir. I don’t mean to be rude but, I just need to inform you that Mr. Brooks normally only sees people by appointment and his hourly rate is rather steep. Consultations are normally 200 dret just for the fitting and then his custom suits start at 2000 dret just for the jacket.”David pulled out his black gold card, “Trust me, not an issue.”“But, Gary…” the man started to ask, remembering the cab fee.“Gary and Steven and everyone else will believe whatever they want. Tell this Mr. Brooks that a VIP with unlimited resources would like to see him.”“Right. One moment.”Fifteen minutes later, an older gentleman dressed in one of the finest gray suits David had seen in a while walked in. “I understand a VIP has visited.”The store clerk pointed to David.“Hmm. You are not much to look at. Did you forget your clothes somewhere, sir?” Mr.

That evening, David Tyr stepped into the banquet hall a new man. His light brown hair had been washed, cut, and combed to the side with just a touch of styling gel to give the front a bit of a swoosh. His beard was trimmed close with sharp lines defining his cheeks.Mr. Brooks had done a wonderful job turning a cheap off the rack tan suit into something that could pass for a 1000 dret outfit by slimming the waistline, taking in the arms to define his toned biceps, and adjusting the shoulders for a better fit. With a week to work, David knew this master could have him ready to appear before the emperor again, but given the time restraint, he had still accomplished a small miracle.“Invitation?” asked the doorman as he glanced up from his list.David wordlessly handed over the small card Steven had given him and was admitted without fuss. With little expectation as to what the night would hold, David made his way over to the buffet. After

David started blankly at the man. This man child was about to lose his hand and maybe his life if he didn’t release his collarbone. It didn’t matter to David if he was the son of the emperor’s favorite advisor, a provincial lord, or any other class of politician or noble.Perhaps Nyx would be able to use his soul to speed her healing. While the notion was interesting, he doubted this degenerate had enough essence to provide Nyx with any real sustenance.“Region. Not province, not empire. Remove your hand in the next second, or I will be calling you dead from now on.”“Arrogant bastard.” He tried to slap David but his hand was easily intercepted.“Let go of me, tramp! I can tell just from looking at it now that this is nothing more than a synthetic fabric. You likely don’t have a penny to your name after renting that suit. Does the Harlow family despise me so much that they would hire a bum off th

A soft knock on his door startled David. He glanced around for a second and then pulled the curtain to hide the unconscious man, and then closed the bathroom door. It wouldn’t do for someone to find him with a soon to be dead man in his room.He opened the door to find Nathaniel.“Sir, no offense, but you look like shit. I have seen you fight icemen with your bare hands and come out in better shape.”“It was an Aranea, Nathaniel. A bloody big Aranea.”Nathaniel grunted, “Shall we talk inside?”“Fine, but Nyx will be here soon.”Nathaniel eyed him as he pushed into the room, “You, ah, sure you are up for such activities in your condition?”David slapped him on the back of the head, “Get your mind out of the gutter. I am not bringing Nyx to a shitty motel like this just for a tumble in the sheets. How are the Huntsmen?”“Assembled. Eight are on al

The next day, a currier delivered a bag full of various herbs and a small jar of liquid silver nitrate. David used the small microwave to boil water and mixed the herbs into a tea. Five drops of the liquid silver compound splashed into the drink as he stirred.David marveled at the simplicity of this recipe and couldn’t quite understand where he had learned it. It just… was. Perhaps his mind had processed some of that book from the cave. While the new medicine was not instantaneous, as David continued his cultivation meditation, he could feel the aches and bruises easing from his body. By late afternoon, he felt like he was at least 60% healed. Another day and he would be good to go, even if his collarbone was still tender. He got up and showered, putting on his suit from the night before once again. If he was going to reside in town for any length of time, he would need some more clothes. He couldn’t keep wearing a single suit or sweats.

Giordani’s was one of the nicer restaurants in town. Situated on a rise that let it look out over the ocean, there was a light breeze blowing across the covered balcony where they were seated. While they were waiting for their food, David asked, “Tell me, Miss Harlow, what is it that you do for the family?”“Oh, well… not as much as I would like. But I have been responsible for getting us new clients and marketing our services for the last five years.”“Has that been difficult?”“A bit. We don’t have the investment capital needed to take on some of the larger projects and not many companies want to give us the chance by investing in a new factory with us.”“I see. So, sell me on this idea.”“Sell you?” Sarah asked, “Is this a date or work?”“Depends. It seemed from that Steven fellow, your cousin, that this was a work dinner. I

As he considered, a formula floated up from his subconscious, one of dozens recorded in the notebook he had found in the cave. A medical marvel indeed.“I can provide you with two things you need. Capital is easy. I can also provide a formula for you that has never been seen in modern history.”“You can? How?”“The capital is just a matter of a few phone calls and some signatures. The recipe, I can give to you now, but, I want to do business with you. Not Steven, not your father. You. I want your name on the contracts and your guarantee on things. No offense, but I don’t trust the rest of your family.”Sarah stared blankly for a moment before coming back to reality. “I don’t know what to say.”After a pause she asked, “Why?”“Because you have a spark that is rare in this world. You want to succeed, but you also want to help people. Men of power will help people in
