In one of the of the alcoves, David found a desk with a single sheet of ancient paper set out as if on display.

“The way is closed. The brothers passed through, the way I will guard. The caves could not sustain us, so they made the ultimate sacrifice, to guard from within the forest of night. May the new fortress stand the test of time.”

Damn. This ancient order must have abandoned this cave and opted to live within the fae lands, establishing a foothold there. If they could survive there, they would slowly become like the fae, bound by the same laws, but also subject to the harshest conditions.

David quickly looked through the rest of the alcoves for anything useful. In one, he found a shelf with a thick well-preserved tome. He tucked it into his pack and then grabbed a few boards that made up what was left of a bed.

He hurried back to the women and found Nyx hovering over Hailey.

“You didn’t kill them?” he asked in surprise as he perceived their breath, faint as it was in the still air.

“I owe you at least two favors and more than a few souls. A taste of my blood, that was already flowing will preserve them for up to a week, but with their injuries, it can only preserve them. I cannot restore them.”

“That was uncharacteristic of you. You are not turning them into fae by giving them blood?”

“I am not one of your vampires, half dead and desiring of a brood of simpleton sycophant followers. My bargain is with you, and you seem to attach some importance to life. Even we fae revere life, even in the taking of it. Besides, the Aranea’s tail is poisoned. They wouldn’t have time if I didn’t.”

“I see. What is our bargain then, to see them out of this cave alive?” David asked.

“A favor repaid, each, and a soul reclaimed, each.”

“Bargain struck.” David said without hesitation. Nyx owed him far more, so it was an easy choice.

They began making a stretcher so they could haul the women up out of the cave without moving them too much.

David’s collarbone screamed at him each time he tried to move that arm, forcing him to made several trips back to the cult sleeping rooms for supplies, only taking what he could carry with one hand. he slowly made each of the women a stretcher before beginning the strenuous process of hauling them out of the cave system.

Injured as he was, it took all of his concentration to block out the pain as he pulled them along. Near the second level, Nyx recovered enough to at least help keep the women stable and maneuver them through some of the tight spaces.

Nyx still needed help ascending each level and didn’t have much strength left, but even a little help leveraging the two women made the work easier.

When they finally saw daylight, David nearly collapsed in relief. As they exited the cave into the woods around the waterfall, his phone dinged as service returned.

David pulled out his phone and dialed.

“Hello?”

David took a moment before saying, “I am activating the Huntsmen. I need a medical evac to my location, yesterday. Make it happen.”

“Please standby… Location locked. Team inbound to the nearest entry point. Those woods are too thick for direct extraction. ETA one hour. The Huntsmen will be notified to meet you.”

There was a pause before the voice asked, “Is it bad?”

“Two civilians near death, and an Aranea.”

There was a sharp inhale before the other end of the line replied, “Understood. I will dispatch a cleanup crew. Any witnesses?”

“No. Its deep underground. The cleaners will need caving gear. Issac will want samples.” David replied simply.

“I will see to it. Be safe, General Tyr.”

David sighed as he hung up and glanced at the path out of the deep forest. Nyx wouldn’t be able to help him after they got to the top of the waterfall but at least the rest was downhill.

Nyx got them to the top of the trail before turning to him, “I will hide in the caves and heal. Don’t worry, your men will never see me or even know I was there. After I am healed, I can blend better.”

After she disappeared back down into the valley, David began the trek back to the road, dragging both stretchers by himself.

Thankfully several hikers met up with them on their way out and quickly joined in to help get the two women out.

At the trail head, a local medical helicopter was touching down, with a pair of flight medics rushing to assess the women.

“We got them, sir. Do you need medical attention as well?”

“No, I will be fine. See to the women,” David would never admit that he was injured to civilians. His collarbone likely showed through his shirt and his chest was likely bruised with internal bleeding, but he would never go to a civilian hospital.

Besides, the Huntsmen would be here within the day. He needed to get back to Nyx and heal in his own way.

“Nyx, please don’t kill her.” David called, unsure what had gotten into Nyx. She wasn’t one to show herself in public lightly and she rarely engaged anyone else in training. With the ferocity he was seeing in her moves, David almost wondered if it was some kind of female jealousy going on.“I am just testing your would be protégé.” Nyx said as she waited for Hensley to regain her senses and get to her feet. “We wouldn’t want a little weakling princess holding you back, no would we?”The fight was less one sided than David had expected. Fighting Nyx was light trying to fight a tornado. Swirling kicks and fists rained down on Hensley but she held her own, at least for a while.Hensley might not be able to land a blow, but being able to defend against Nyx was a feat in of itself. A lesser opponent would have succumb to the onslaught after a few seconds.“Two minutes. That is time.&rdqu

David worked out his frustrations by training with the men at the training ground every day. Those who had survived hell week were subjected to a ruinous treatment as David battled groups of ten per day. They were allowed to use any attack they wished, and employ any tactic they could think of to attack him. Any blow they managed to land would pay out a 1000 dret at the end of the day.Only Hensley and two others managed to collect by week’s end.The recruits didn’t know the details about the missing men from hell week, and they had not been made aware of the mission the Huntsmen undertook, but David made sure to spend time each afternoon drilling with Hensley. If what Tristan had told them was to be believed, she might be one of the few that could hold their own against an Amris if they ever had to face one again.David almost wished he had ordered her to join the huntsmen on that day. Perhaps she would have been able to work with Nyx

The sun had set once more by the time the battlefield had been cleared and the wounded or dead transported back to Perth. David slumped into a high backed chair in one of the newly renovated conference rooms near the top of the Perth Center tower.“And to conclude, our final count is six dead, five seriously wounded. That specialist, Nyx, is still unaccounted for,” Nathaniel said formally. He stood at parade rest, one arm in a sling and several bandages showed along his neck and arms.“Six dead.” David let out a long breath. More than he had ever lost in a single engagement among his elite soldiers. Not only that, but it had been only three Amris that had caused such ruinous losses. In the many wars he had fought in and led men through, it was not uncommon to lose someone, but normally the loses were far heavier among the enemy. Losing double and damn close to quadruple just to kill three fae was unacceptable and a stain on his lead

Nyx was laying on the ground, but he couldn’t tell from here if she still lived. One of the Amris had been dismembered completely by the wolves and several others were growling at the second.A flash of blonde drew is attention as a silver blade slashed through the second Amris, slicing it in half from shoulder to opposite hip. Blood sprayed as women stepped through the space the amris had just been. She was dressed in a strange green leather armor and a diadem of green leaves graced her blonde locks. She flicked the blood from her sliver blade and took two long strides towards the remaining Amris.“You killed my sisters,” The Amris mused. “You will pay dearly for that.”The woman didn’t dignify the Amris with a reply, instead engaging in a series of lightning fast slashes.David marveled at her restrained movement. Every step was perfectly placed to conserve as much movement as possible while always moving her i

It was unnerving to have to face their own men without ever spotting the Amris they were hunting. Those who were bewitched seemed sluggish in their movements as if someone else had to order their every move. While this would make it easier to take them out, they were still huntsmen and David was loathe to harm his own men, even if they were now fighting against him. He could only imagine the terror and chaos such an attack would cause in a town or city if an Amris were to leave the forest.“Not bad,” came a haunting and melodic voice. The shadows moved and a lithe figure stepped forward. David shined his flashlight at the figure revealing a slim female figure. The being was nearly completely naked with gray skin. The Amris has made a sash of leaves that draped from one shoulder down to a belt of green vine. Had there been cloth beneath, it might have been fashionable, but as it was, the leaves did nothing to cover her figure. When her eyes gli

“A friendly just killed Trevor, so forgive us if we are a bit on edge,” Nathaniel replied.Wide eyes stares took in the scene and Dravko lowered his rifle before running his hand through his hair, “Damn, one of them snapped? What the hell happened?”David explained, “Hayden stumbled out of the woods. We figured he was the only survivor of his team. But then he just opened fire, killing Trevor before I took him down.”Motion on the edge of the small clearing caught David’s attention and he raised his rifle, causing a chain reaction as the rest of the huntsmen did the same. something darted away and David signaled to the men. Several charged after it while David, Nathaniel and Nyx hung back to be rear guard.“We will return for the bodies after this is dealt with,” David assured Nathaniel. “We need to finish this first.”Turning to Nyx, “Can you try to flank it or com
