Chapter Seventy: Suicidal.
She awoke on the temple floors, confused as to the sudden change in her surroundings. How did I get here? The forgotten temple, illuminated by the sun, was truly an artifact of the past. Scribbled across its walls were words in a language she could not, even if she bothered to, read.Yet the bright midday sun, in all its glory, could not warm the frozen ice that was Renée’s heart. She dragged herself to sit against a pillar, her gaze dull and lifeless. For a long while, she simply stared at the cracked ceiling, tracing the faint golden shafts of sunlight spilling through. What's next? She asked herself.Voyne had tormented her and thrown her away. She spent days out in the docks trying to find the Shards. And when she did, they cast her away too. She came back to kill Voyne, to at least do something useful herself. She ended in an underground prison.Even the person who saved her hadn't bothered to even take her somewhere to be treated or even stayed to watch over her.A laugh escaped he
Chapter Seventy-One: Deals with Devils.
The chamber was dim, lit only by wavering candlelight that cast tall , distorted shadows on the stone walls. A cliché setting of a criminal's office. "Welcome, Princess to the Order of the Brotherhood. What can we do for you today?" "It's Archduchess to you." Klare snapped coldly. The Brother faltered. "Ah yes. Of course. Forgive my slip, Archduchess." "You've been quite silent lately. How are the preparations coming? This matter is not going to investigate itself." "I beg your mercy, Archduchess. We simply received no word from our friends. Their silence is quite.....troubling, but I assure you we are working on it." He tried to hide it, but his voice was still a bit shaky. "Have you considered that they may not be alive to send you word?" She replied. "We have thought of that, Archduchess. Another group are prepared to infiltrate the Chruch." "We dont have much time. I believe the Chruch is about to make a big move." She paused awhile "See that you do that as soon as
Chapter Seventy-Two: Incredulous.
Reese would never understand women. He could only hope that Lyann, the only one acquainted with the sea in the group would understand his description. He was lucky as it turned out. "The Eye is located on a deserted island." He said at the war tent when they were all gathered in an impromptu meeting. "Almost all important places are located on deserted islands. So which one?" Lyann asked, yawning. "That's the problem. I could see the layout of the island, but I don't know its name." "......" The rest were speechless. "Then, how do you expect us to find it?" Jonelle questioned. "I was hoping you would help." Reese said, referring to the pirate. "There are lots of deserted islands, love. You would have to describe this one pretty well." Lyann replied. "Can you describe anything unique about this island?" Kane asked Reese. "Well, it's, uh, circular. " "There are a lot of circular islands that I know." The pirate replied. "OK then, it's not just circular, it's like
Chapter Seventy-Three: Exposed.
Damn the Order! She cursed again. She had heard too late about their plans from her spy network. When she confronted the Brother earlier, he must have known that it was too late for her to stop it. Not that the Brother could stop the riots from happening if he wanted to. He was not at the top of the Equalist pecking order, just a liaison between the them and Klare. But she wanted to thank them at the same time! If the riots were occurring equally in all the regions, it would mean that no Great Noble could accuse any of being negligent when their own territory was destabilized. She quickly calmed herself down so she could take control of the situation as effectively as possible. "Send a letter to the Great Nobles. The High Council must meet." This was her first statement after digesting the news. "As soon as possible." "Yes, Archduchess. " came Ayle's reply as she scurried to get it done. Now, Klare was walking to the Archives, where an emergency meeting of the Nobles was
Chapter Seventy-Four: Expected.
Just before Luthen made his daring break in to Sophie’s Manor "We left her at the old site, the one underneath the temple. It would be too much trouble to bring her. Besides, she'll most likely die there anyways." Voyne said. Mother didn't immediately answer. She was busy with her drink. "How about-" She started before she cut herself off. A presence seemed to be searching the manor. It was a sophisticated intent. Definitely a Shard. Why was one here? "Which of them is protecting the room?" Voyne knew which group of people she was talking of. "Maron." He replied. "Interesting choice." Mother even smiled. "Continue." "Most of the personnel are assembled at the pickup point. Only our expendable members remain here." "Why?" "The Great Nobles are onto us and not just Klare. " Voyne said. "The Nobles? I wonder how frustrating this must be for Klare." Mother tried to pic
Chapter Seventy-Five: Teaser
"Maron?" "Hello, old friend." The voice was recognised by Luthen, even if it felt like ice was layered in. Not him again! "I would have preferred to watch the touching reunion, but, We'll be taking our leave first." Mother said, retreating to a corner of the room with her son. A blue circle glowed to life under their feet. It rose up slowly, encircling them. "Your orders, Mother?" asked Maron. "Give him a demonstration and don't expose yourself to them if you can. It isn't time yet." was the instruction he received. "Oh no. You aren't going yet!" Luthen outstretched his arm, his intent focusing on stopping the teleportation. The teleport circle had no option but to heed the Space Shard. It stopped ascending and begun to descend. "Stop him!" came Mother's shrill cry. Luthen knew he left himself exposed. Half of him was focused on keeping Mother here until the Great Seven would arrive. Maron stretched his arms towards the Circle too. His Ability had a part of the Sp
Chapter Seventy-Six: Frustration, Anger, Self-Hate.
Luthen stood some distance away from Sophie’s house, sufficiently concealed in the shadows yet observing the commotion he had caused. "Find him!" came an authoritative voice. "He couldn't have gone far! By Order of the High Council!" He saw soldiers scurry in different directions, some entering the building to support those already there, others surrounding the house and searching every nook and cranny. He wished he could tell them it was of no use. ******* "I swear I saw him!" A solider tried to explain to his captain and his fellow colleagues. Their faces were the epitome of disbelief. "He was real like you and I!" "He could have teleported!" One of the more tactless soldiers replied him. The rest looked at him like he was stupid. However, the serious face of his captain bore a semblance of anger. The tactless solider whitened as he realized his mistake. He had indirectly insulted his superior. "I am sorry, Captain!" He quickly excused himself from the area. The
Chapter Seventy-Seven: Departure
The High Council chamber was sounding more alive than normalSix Archdukes filled the vaulted hall with overlapping opinions and protests, their voices rising in sharp waves that echoed throughout the room. “This is unbelievable!” Duke Orrbi slammed his palm flat against the table. “The riots are spreading, the people are restless, and yet you tell us to stop the search? To stop the search is to hand the realm over to chaos! We should intensify it instead.”That was what Revner thought too. Infact, that was what everyone else thought, which was why they murmured agreement. Even Klare the only dissenter here, would normally agree with Orrbi. So why was she telling them to call of the search? I didn't make any sense. To make things worse, she was in no mood for explanation. “Chaos has already taken hold,” Manning retorted. “The Equalists stir rebellion in the streets while Voyne and the Church move towards a goal. We are trapped between a rock and a hard place.”Klare sat at the head
Chapter Seventy‐Eight: The Eye.
Water rocked the ship slowly, like a mother singing its child to sleep. Lyann’s crew scambered around the ship, performing one task or another, happy to be back on the ship. But not everyone was happy. Some for instance were a little seasick."I know we are desperate," Somen started as he emerged from below the deck. But I didn’t know we were desperate enough to look for a deserted, long-forgotten island, emerging from the sea at a point that we don't know and that may or may not be real. How do we even know if it's the one?"'I'll know when I see it." Reese countered."Which is when exactly? Roaming the oceans for 50 years isn't my dream life." He moaned."If we are alive." Lyann added unhelpfully, emerging from the bridge, holding some scrolled up paper.Somen wasn't watching her since he went to vomit into the sea. "Can't take much more of this."She unfolded her scrolled up paper, which turned out to be a map. It was quite old by the looks of it."I thought you said you didn't kno
Chapter Seventy-Nine: Who Is Pulling The Strings?
Mother stood at the bank of the lake formed by the ring shaped island (calling it an atoll from now on;)), facing the water, her hand tight in a fist. It's just under the water ahead, She thought, though she didn't need reminding. Her reflection shimmered as another figure appeared suddenly, his silhouette refelected in the water. She wasn't surprised. He would have turned up sooner or later. She thought back to his last words to her.The final ritual. Then All would be One, he promised her back then. Now, he hovered in front of her as she walked to the very altar she would perform the ritual on."About time you showed up." Mother grumbled to the figure. It was made of darkness, not just clothed by it. Yet this darkness had some eerie shine to it. It reminded one of the beautiful darkness that lay in the space, around galaxies, complementing and contrasting the stars.A dark light, consuming the sunlight around it yet releasing its own."While I apologize, Solyn Iskra, I believed you
