Chapter 21
The Chief hesitated, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. “Tristan Crow? Sir, with all due respect, that man is a… a nuisance. An alcoholic. He’s constantly causing disturbances, sleeping in stores. He’s been in and out of here a dozen times.”Max’s eyes narrowed. His anger, momentarily controlled, flared again. Bucky took a subtle step forward, his presence alone a silent threat. The Chief saw it. He knew he was pushing his luck, angering the richest man in the country even further.“Very well, Mr. Lesley!” the Chief quickly conceded, forcing a smile. “Consider it done! He’ll be released immediately!” He barked orders into his radio.A few minutes later, Tristan Crow, looking even more battered than Max, was escorted out. He blinked in the bright lights, his eyes still a little unfocused.“Tristan!” Max called out.Tristan looked over, surprised. “Max! You’re out! Told ya your grandma would send a jet.” He tried to grin, but it stretched his bruised face.“They released you too,
Chapter 22
Before Marco could come to a complete stop in the Porsche, the front door of his grandma's mansion flew open. Lady Roslyn remained in place, her expression marked by concern, but upon seeing Max, a surge of relief enveloped her. She hurried ahead, wrapping him in a firm embrace. “Oh, Maxwell! My dear boy! Look at you!” she cried, her voice thick with emotion. She pulled back, her hands cupping his bruised face, her eyes scanning his torn suit, the dark circles under his eyes. “What have they done to you? Those… those bastards! I’ll have their badges! Their pensions! Their… their kneecaps!”Max winced, a small, pained laugh escaping him. “Grandma, it’s… it’s okay. Really. I just… I really need a shower.”She pulled him closer again, her embrace fierce. “A shower, yes, of course. But first… oh, my poor boy.” She patted his back gently. “That girl, Maxwell. She called me. She was so scared. So, so scared.”Max’s head snapped up. “The girl? Is she okay? Is she here?”“Yes, yes, she’s her
Chapter 23
Max stared at Bucky. “You mean… me? You want me to… to bathe her?”Bucky’s expression remained utterly serious. “Indeed. It is not uncommon in cases of trauma. A familiar, trusted presence can often facilitate cooperation where others fail.”Max felt a blush creep up his neck. This was… awkward. More than awkward. But he looked at the girl now tracing the pattern on the wallpaper with a little fingered thumb - her eyes still wide with curiosity - and said, she looked like a child. And so... innocent.“Ok, ” Max said, rubbing the back of his neck. “Ok. Shit whatever, Just... direct me to the bathroom. ”The maid took them inside a ridiculously large bathroom ( big enough for Max's entire dorm room ) with claw foot tub, separate walk in shower and more marble than he had ever seen before.“I’ll pick up some towels and soap for you, Mr. Luckey, ” the maid said, trying not to smile.Max turned to the girl. “Hey. We’re gonna get you clean, okay? A nice warm bath.”She looked at the tub, th

Max awoke slowly, a little weight on his side as he tries to figure what was happening. He turned his head and his eyes went out. Lena. There she was, curled up next to him, face asleep, a scruff of hair flutting on her cheek in a sudden wave. His heart beat hard against the metal of his ribs. He freaked out silently. How did she get here? What… what happened last night? He racked his brain, but nothing. He remembered the bath, the tears, her name. That was it. He hadn’t… he hadn’t done anything, right? He was sure he hadn’t. He’d just held her.He looked at her again. She was so small, so vulnerable. And, yeah, kinda cute, in a sleeping, innocent way. He just couldn’t help but smile a little. He carefully slowly kicked himself out of the bed, trying not to disturb her, and he threw his head back on the edge of the toilet, grateful for the silence. He took a long soaking in the hot shower and washed away the crippling pain from yesterday. He felt… lighter. Despite everything, he was a

Chapter 25The red Porsche pulled up a good two blocks from the school gates, just like Max asked. “Here’s good, Marco,” Max said, trying to sound casual. He didn’t need the whole student body seeing him roll up in a car like that. Not yet, anyway.“As you wish, Mr. Luckey,” Marco replied, his voice a little too serious. He still looked worried, glancing at Max’s face. “Please, call if you need anything at all.”“Will do,” Max said, stepping out. The car purred away, blending into the morning traffic. Max took a deep breath. School. Normalcy. He needed that. He started walking, trying to feel like a regular kid again. He hadn’t even made it to the school gate when an arm suddenly wrapped around his neck, pulling him into a headlock.“Max! You son of a gun! Where the hell have you been?!”It was Roland, grinning like a maniac, his arm squeezing Max’s head. Max struggled, laughing. “Roland! Can’t… breathe!”Roland released him, still beaming. “Man, you missed it! The event of the year!
Chapter 26
Roland’s eyes widened slightly. He caught Max’s eye, a knowing look passing between them. ‘Aha! A date!‘ Roland’s mind raced. This was it. Max and Trisha. Alone at last. He had to help this along.Trisha turn to Roland and Sarah, “Do you guys wanna come as well.”“Oh, man, a museum, huh?” Roland said, scratching his head, trying to look disappointed. “That sounds… really cool, Trisha. I wish I could. But, uh…” He looked at Sarah, who was happily munching on a cookie, completely oblivious. “Sarah and I actually… we have this thing. A secret date. Yeah. Super secret. Can’t tell anyone.”Sarah paused mid-chew, looking at Roland, her brow furrowed. “We do?”Roland quickly put an arm around her, pulling her close. “Yeah, babe! Remember? That super secret thing we talked about? Just us. Top secret.” He winked at Max, who almost choked on his water.Sarah still looked confused, but she smiled, shrugging. “Oh! Right! Our… secret thing. Gosh, I completely forgot! Sorry, Trisha! I’d love to see

The sleek black Mercedes shuddered as it came to a halt in front of the tall offices of Luckey Corp. Max did not wait for Marco to open the door for him, he launched it opening himself, barely lifting his backpack off his back and rippling up his school clothes. He looked downright out of place on the marble and gleaming glass of the corporate headquarters. In the revolving doors he leapt into the vast, ostentatious lobby. Bucky was there, by a massive, multilevel LED screen that swallowed the far wall of the building. The screen, usually used to show corporate corporate colors or peace and tranquility or nature shots, was now a mess of red lines, falling graphs and blowing negative numbers.“Bucky! What’s going on? What’s the emergency? “Max yelled to his neighbors in a hushed voice at this point.Bucky, as usual, was calm, even as all the chaos hung over the screen behind him was being shown to him by some man. "Watch Mr. Luckey, " he said.Max looked at the numbers and his eyebrow

Bucky stepped forward, a remote in his hand, and the main screen at the front of the room lit up with a detailed presentation.“Gentlemen, ladies,” Bucky began, his voice calm and precise. “As you are aware, our recent investment in prime Los Angeles real estate has been substantial. We acquired thousands of properties, strategically located for future development. However, over the past 48 hours, a coordinated attack has been launched against these assets.”He clicked the remote, and a new graph appeared, showing a rival company’s logo. Langston Corp.“Langston Corp,” Bucky continued, “has been systematically acquiring shares of these properties, often at inflated prices, only to then dump them back onto the market at significantly undervalued rates. This rapid, artificial devaluation is designed to crash the market for these specific assets, causing a ripple effect that impacts our overall stock value and, indeed, the entire real estate market in the region.”A murmur went through t
Chapter 29
It happened to be Sunday. Max woke up abruptly, with a peculiar flutter in his chest. The outing with Trisha at the exhibition center was on his mind. Certainly not a romantic outing. He recited it to himself, akin to a mantra, while tossing aside the blankets. He remained in his dorm room last night to steer clear of any uncomfortable questions from Roland or Sarah. He had to maintain a division between his two lives, at least for the time being. He however could not get his mind of Victor Langston. His grandmother's voice resonated in his mind: “He’s coming for you.” There was something perilous and merciless about the man. However, he set aside the thoughts. Today was about the… art exhibition. And Trisha too. He took a shower and got dressed meticulously, opting for a more relaxed yet fashionable ensemble. He devoted an absurd amount of time attempting to manage his hair. He gazed at his reflection in the mirror. “Just a casual trip, Max. Don’t ruin it.“ At the Museums. He see

Max stepped out of the cab. He started to run up into the grand entrance of the mansion, his heart beating violently in his chest. He refused to push up on the revolving door, just pulled up the main door, the hard wood pounded against the wall. He looked panicked around the magnificent entrance hall, his eyes searching for even one ripple of disorganization, a crisis.A maid wiping the vase was looking up suspiciously. “Mr. Luckey! Is everything all right? ”“Lena! My grandma! Are they all right? What happened? Lena called me and said there was an emergency! ” Max gasped, all his breath coming out of his nose. The maid blinking and curious expression on her face. “Miss Lena, emergency sir? No. Everything is all right. Lady Roslyn is in her study and Miss Lena... Miss Lena is in the kitchen. ”Max stared at her, dumbfounded. “The… kitchen?”“Yes, sir. She said she would like to cook something for you.” The maid gave a little courteous smile.Max didn’t wait. He ran at a snail’s pace t
