Max awoke slowly, a little weight on his side as he tries to figure what was happening. He turned his head and his eyes went out. Lena. There she was, curled up next to him, face asleep, a scruff of hair flutting on her cheek in a sudden wave.

His heart beat hard against the metal of his ribs. He freaked out silently. How did she get here? What… what happened last night? He racked his brain, but nothing. He remembered the bath, the tears, her name. That was it. He hadn’t… he hadn’t done anything, right? He was sure he hadn’t. He’d just held her.

He looked at her again. She was so small, so vulnerable. And, yeah, kinda cute, in a sleeping, innocent way. He just couldn’t help but smile a little. He carefully slowly kicked himself out of the bed, trying not to disturb her, and he threw his head back on the edge of the toilet, grateful for the silence.

He took a long soaking in the hot shower and washed away the crippling pain from yesterday. He felt… lighter. Despite everything, he was a

She froze, Evelyn suddenly, her anger dissolving into a single, astonished terror. Her wide, panicked eyes wandered around the room like they were searching for small cameras. “No! You wouldn’t! You wouldn’t dare! ” she whispered softly.Trisha’s expression remained unwavering. “Try me.”Max watched, sort of detached from him. Evelyn - the Queen of manipulation - the girl who had just orchestrated an overt assault was terrified. She truly was scared - and only because she was talking about her mother. And he wondered for a second what kind of mother could her own daughter get that scared of?Evelyn stared at Trisha for another long moment, then her gaze flickered to the unconscious Brock, then back to Max. Her face crumpled. She turned and fled, her heels clicking rapidly as she disappeared through the museum doors.Trisha sighed, the tension draining from her shoulders. She turned to Max, her anger replaced by overwhelming concern. Her eyes scanned his face, taking in the blood, the

The lead security guard, a big, burly man with a scowl scarred on his face, took another step forward and tightened the grip of his baton. "You heard the lady punk, you're coming with us. Don't make this any worse than it needs to be. "Max never flinched, wiping the blood from his lips with the back of his hand, his eyes - heavy -- filled with exhaustion and pain - showing a dangerous glow. “I’m not going anywhere! ”The guard laughed. "You think you're tough, huh? We'll see about that. " He lunged, his baton aimed for Max's ribs.Max moved. Not like the fluid, graceful grace he fessed up to in a fight with Brock. That was instinct, fuelled by adrenaline and not one bit of self-restraint in his reluctance to be beaten again. He evaded the swing at the guard; the baton waving in his ears, Max grabbed his arm from the guard and turned his way around, using the movement of the man to his advantage. The guard grunted, unbalanced. Max kicked hard at the back of the guard’s knee at the ank

Suddenly Trisha stumbled back, staring at… Max. He was standing a little swayed with the lingering drip of blood still running down his temple but open and with a cold fury she had never before seen.Brock groaned, rising on one elbow, the bleeding jaw already swelling. He looked at Max then spit a mouthful of blood onto the ground. “You! You should have stayed down, you dumb worm! Now... now I'm gonna kill you! He moved right over his knees, wiping the blood from his mouth, his eyes now narrowing into slits of utter hatred.“Stay down Brock! ” Evelyn ran to his side and tried to grab hold of him, “He’s not worth it! ”Brock ignored her, his focus on Max. Brock lunged again. That whirling run was wild and desperate. Max didn’t hesitate. He moved with a fluidity that Trisha had never known he had. He took the upper hand off Brock’s toady punch, his body just a blur of motion. He blocked the next kick with his forearm and not even the impact felt.Max was close, keeping the momentum in

The cool nights bit at Trisha’s exposed arms, but she didn’t notice. She stood outside the huge entrance to the museum, her phone tight in her ear, with the dial tone turning in an embarrassed rhythm. “Come on, Max, pick up, ” she muttered. She walked slow around the museum. He’d promised. He’d told her he would be home before the night was out. But the museum’s closing, and he was gone. She called his number again. Voicemail. And a few feet away, Evelyn, holding up her hand to her mouth, eyes wide with

The black Mercedes screeched to a halt outside the stately grand entrance to the city museum, then Max didn’t sit still for Marco to open the door, threw it open, and fell screaming out. Only after he was able to see Marco’s worrying “Mr Luckey! ” . That a running Max ran toward the huge bright building. He felt a heartbeat fill his ribs, a frantic beat hurting against his ribs. ‘Please, let her still be here. Please, let her understand’As he unlocked the hallowed gates he ran his eyes crazy through the huge, echoing lobby.
