CHAPTER 101: Road of Flames (2)
The other boars had come back. They had gone sideways into the trees from the fire-wall, squealing, with their bristles smoking; now they came out again, one after another, all along the edge of the track, and their small red eyes were fixed on the ring of shields. The fire-wall was burning low. Fu Rong could feel it going—the heat she had put into the ground running out of it like water out of a cracked jar.She did not try to hold it. She let it go, and lifted her staff. It was oak, carved with the flame of Yanling from end to end, and at the tip of it, bound in a cage of red-gold wire, was a raw firestone the size of a plum, uncut, with the orange light moving in it like something breathing. She had carried it since she was sixteen. She had never needed all of it."Serpents," she said.It was not quite a word. It was the shape of a word in the old tongue of the pits, the one the first miners had used to talk to the fire under the mountain, and the firestone at the tip of the staff h
CHAPTER 102: Road of Flames (3)
The noise of it was beyond noise. The fire-storm stood on the track and turned, roaring, with the boars inside it, and Fu Rong could see them in there—dark shapes in the brightness, whirling, lifted off their feet—and hear them screaming, and then not hear them, because the roar was louder than anything alive could be. The heat came out of it in waves that pushed the knights back against their own shields. Leaves on trees fifty yards away curled up and blackened on the branch. Behind the shield-wall, a horse broke its tether and bolted down the track, and nobody went after it.She held it as long as she could. Then she held it a little longer. Then she let it go.It went up. It went back up into the green roof of the forest where it had come from, spinning, thinning, a column of red and then of orange and then of nothing, and the leaves it had lifted came fluttering down through the smoke in a long slow burning rain. The track was black. For thirty yards in every direction, the leaf mo
CHAPTER 103: The Princess Arrives
Carosso came up out of the plain in the middle of a bright afternoon late in the autumn, with the harvest in, and Fu Rong, who had grown up inside a mountain, reined in her Firesteed at the top of the last rise and simply looked. It was not built into anything. That was the first thing. It stood out in the open, on its hills, on both banks of its broad brown river, as if it had never once in its life been afraid of anything coming over the horizon—walls within walls, pale stone, and roofs of red tile and grey slate climbing the slopes, and towers, and the glitter of glass, and bridges strung across the river like beads on a thread. There was smoke going up from what must have been a thousand chimneys, and all of it went straight up in the still air. On the highest hill, above everything, stood a castle of pale stone with dragons on its banners. And on the edge of the city nearest them, on the flat ground by the river, something enormous was being built: a great oval of raw new stone, h
CHAPTER 104: A Feast of New Flavors
The banquet was that evening, in the great hall of Castle Carosso, and Fu Rong was given the seat of honor at the Regent's own table, on his right hand, which Liuyue said afterward was either a very great compliment or a very great test, and probably both. She had eaten at a great many state banquets. Yanling's were famous: eleven courses, each one a small architecture of spice and color, served on red lacquer and eaten in a strict order that took a child of the royal house three years to learn. This was nothing like that. This was abundance. The long tables down the hall were loaded from end to end all at once, as if the kitchens had simply emptied themselves onto them—whole roast birds glazed with honey and something sharp, and great brown loaves, and stews in iron pots with the steam still going up, and wheels of cheese, and pies, and fruit piled in pyramids, and at intervals down the tables, towering and slightly lopsided, cakes. People reached across one another for things. People
CHAPTER 105: Royal Proposition (1)
The audience was set for the third morning, in the throne room, and Fu Rong dressed for it as if for a battle.Red silk, the red of the royal house of Yanling, cut close and plain, so that it would not look as though she had come to be admired. A circlet of thin gold on her brow, no more; her mother's advice, given on the palace steps with both hands on her face. Wear enough to be a princess, and not so much that they wonder what you're selling. Liuyue had put up her hair and stood back and looked at her for a long time and then taken the jeweled pin out of it again, without comment."Too much?" said Fu Rong."Not enough of you," said Liuyue. "There. Now it's only you."The throne room of Castle Carosso was long and high and pale, with tall windows down one side, and it was full. She had expected that. She had not expected the way it was full. At home, a court stood still for an envoy—stood in its ranks along the pillars and waited, and did not speak, and did not move. Here they stood
CHAPTER 106: Royal Proposition (2)
"My council," said the Regent, "thinks Yanling is five weeks away through a forest, rich and soft, and wants to know what Carosso would be tying itself to if it sent its sons over the Jade Stair to die for your pits." He said it quite pleasantly, and loudly enough for the whole hall. Along the ranks of ministers, somebody coughed. "And your father's court thinks Carosso is a country of strangers who will only fight for their own family. Which is why it wants to make you my family."Fu Rong did not say anything. She was not sure she could have."Neither of those is a question a marriage answers," the Regent said. "A marriage just makes them quieter. They're still there the morning after, and the morning after that, and the first time the frost legions come down the Stair and somebody in this hall has to decide whether to send ten thousand men, they'll all come back." He looked around at the hall. "So let's answer them. Now. In the open, where both our peoples can see the answer.""How?"
CHAPTER 107: Grand Arena Rises
They buried Aldo Tully on the morning of the twenty-first day, in the churchyard of the old river church below the arena, under a sky that had rained itself out in the night and was now very high and very clean. It was not a large burial. Ethan had not asked anyone to come. They came anyway: Master Brannoc, and behind him the dwarves of Ironroot in their rows, two hundred of them, in their working leathers with their hoods back and their beards combed; Calder, who had commanded the walls at Northfort, standing very straight with his one good eye on the grave; eleven men of the Steel Guard who had been farm boys in the reach and had stood on the east wall through the siege while an old man on the gatehouse steps counted the catapult strikes out loud. Nina, with her hands clasped in front of her and her face set. Celestia, in plain black, at Ethan's side.Nobody made a speech. The priest said the words for the dead, the short ones, and the dwarves said something of their own in their own
CHAPTER 108: Mithril and Fire
The hour went by in a great noise of people buying things. There were stalls all around the outside of the arena, under the arches—hot chestnuts and cider, meat on skewers, ribbons in the colors of Carosso and, already, somebody selling ribbons in the red-and-gold of Yanling at twice the price. Ethan could hear it from the arming-room under the north stand, where he sat on a bench with his elbows on his knees and Eileen crouched in front of him, lacing the last buckle of his left greave and swearing at it."Stop fidgeting.""I'm not fidgeting.""You're breathing. It's the same thing, in armor." She yanked the buckle tight. "There. Stand up."He stood. The armor went with him, light and close and cool, like a second skin that somebody had made out of moonlight and then thought better of and painted dark. Mithril plate, all of it, from the gorget to the sabatons—Eileen had made it over the summer, in the gaps between the Storm Sword and the knights' mail, and enameled it midnight-blue be
CHAPTER 109: The Princess's Draft
The Regent received them that evening in a small room at the top of the east tower, with one door and three chairs and a fire, and more people in it than it had been built for.Fu Rong had washed the soot off her face and put up her hair, and the arena was still on her. The heat of the staff sat in her palms. The dark sat in her shoulders, and in the dark a hand on her shoulder that was not there. The Regent sat by the fire in a plain coat, pale, with nothing on his face to say what had happened in the arming-room. But she had stood at the rail when he wiped his lip with the back of his gauntlet, and she had seen what came away on the leather. Lady Celestia stood behind his chair. Liuyue had come in with the folder, Leon stooped under the lintel behind her with his ribs strapped and an air of enormous contentment, and the Chancellor, Lord Renwick, a stout man in round spectacles, was wedged into the window corner with a writing-board on his knee."Princess. Take the chair. I've been si
CHAPTER 110: Wolf Against Stone
"Ladies and gentlemen!"Nina's voice went round the great oval and came back off the far stands, and the ten thousand in them answered with a roar Fu Rong felt in the rail under her hands."Welcome back to the Grand Arena of Carosso! Day two! Are you ready?"They told her so, at length. Nina paced the sand with her sleeves flapping and let them. She had the look of someone who has found, late and by accident, the one thing she was made for."On the west side! She came north in a collar and she stayed without one. She stood on the wall at Northfort when it mattered, and she has never in her life lost a fair fight, because until this year nobody let her have one! The Burning Wolf of the North, LYSSANDRA!"The west gate opened, and the wolf came out.Fu Rong had seen her once, at a distance, going through long forms with two swords on the training ground behind the barracks. She had not seen the face. It was young and thin, all angles under a ragged cap of silver hair cut short as a boy's
