CHAPTER 51: Undead Plains
The fields of Carosso went on for a day and a half, green and fat and fenced, and then they stopped, all at once, along a line nobody had drawn. On one side of the line there was wheat. On the other side there was wheat too, but nobody had cut it, and it had fallen over on itself in the rain and gone black at the roots. The first village past the line had its doors open. All of them. A cart stood in the one street with its shafts on the ground and no horse, and in a yard behind a cottage there was a wooden cradle with nothing in it, set out in the sun as though someone had meant to come back for it after the rest was loaded. They met the people who had left it on the road, going the other way. Families walking beside carts piled with bedding and pots and grandmothers. A man carrying a goat. Nobody spoke to them unless they spoke first, and when Ethan asked, a woman with a baby on her hip told him it was the fourth village now, and that there were men at the river crossings who took a t
CHAPTER 52: Nightmare Lord
The courtyard beyond the portcullis was full of statues that had been left out in the weather for a very long time. Gargoyles with their muzzles worn smooth. A fountain, cracked across the basin, with a rust-red stain down the inside where water had once come out of a stone mouth and gone on coming for years. Moonlight lay on everything, although it was the middle of the morning outside the walls. Ethan looked up and saw the moon, small and white, directly overhead, where it had no business being."His sky," said Celestia. "His house, his sky."Two wolves came out of an archway at the far side of the court. They were the size of ponies and their eyes were the same crimson as the points of light on the battlements, and they came low and fast and silent, which was how he knew they were not really wolves.Celestia took the first one head-on. Her sword went into its chest to the guard and black fire went in after it, and the thing burst apart into a smoke that smelled of old blood.Ethan m
CHAPTER 53: Celebration
The goldsmith's shop was the narrowest building on the Street of Smiths, squeezed between a cutler and a man who made nothing but hinges, and the goldsmith herself was a small old woman with a loupe screwed into one eye and fingers so scarred from the crucible that they looked like knotted string. She took the pendant out of Ethan's hand and held it up to the window."Feya silver," she said at once. "Stall work. Somebody pulled this wire through a plate with a hole in it and called it a chain." She turned the ruby into the light and was silent for a moment. "The stone's another matter. The stone's worth forty of the chain. Fifty. Who sold you this for what you paid?""A man who wanted to get home before the rain.""Well, he got home dry." She put it down on a square of green baize. "I'll set it in gold for you. Proper chain, proper clasp. It deserves it.""No," said Ethan. "Mend the clasp. Keep the chain."She took the loupe out of her eye and looked at him with the eye underneath it,
CHAPTER 54: Royal Commission
The council chamber of Castle Carosso faced east, and at first light the sun came straight through its three tall windows of colored glass and lay across the long stone table in bars of red and gold and green, so that everything on the table—the maps, the rolled dwarven scrolls, the inkwells, the Queen's clasped hands—looked as though it had been painted onto it.King Aldric sat at the head of the table with a cup of something hot and did not say anything. He had said good morning when they came in, very kindly, and then sat back and folded his hands across his stomach, and it became clear within a minute that this was not his meeting. It was the Queen's.Queen Isolde was a tall woman somewhere past sixty, with a long braid of silver hair down her back and a face that had been handsome and was now something better than handsome, which was attentive. She did not sit. She stood at the side of the table with one hand flat on the biggest of the maps, and when Garrick had finished introduci
CHAPTER 55: Nina of the Clanhold
They rode out of the north gate at mid-morning, under the kingdom's banner, which somebody had run up the pole over the bridge especially. People stopped on the bridge to watch them go. A few of them bowed. One old woman put her hand on Celestia's stirrup as the mare went by, quite without asking, the way you touch a shrine for luck, and took it away again before Celestia could decide what to do about it."That's new," said Nina, riding behind on Wulfric."It's four days old," said Ethan."Well. It'll get older." She looked back at the city over her shoulder, and then forward again at the road north, and seemed to put Carosso away somewhere in herself with some relief. "They'll be singing about you by the time we're back. If we're back.""That's cheerful.""I'm clan-raised," said Nina. "We don't do cheerful. We do accurate."The fields ran out by noon, and the road began to climb into pine forest, with the Grey Peaks showing through the gaps ahead of them, higher each time. At a stable
CHAPTER 56: Mistveil Labyrinth
There were four drakes, and it took longer than it should have, because Ethan would not use the cold.He fought them with steel alone and the cracked blade held, just. Nina fought them with the hammer, which turned out to be the right tool for creatures that were mostly armor: she let the first one come at her and stepped aside and brought the hammer down two-handed on the back of its skull, and the sound it made was the sound of a door being broken in. Celestia burned one in the tunnel mouth and took the head off another. The last one Ethan killed badly, on his back in the snow with its weight on his legs, the point of the sword in under its jaw.He lay there afterward looking up at the white sky while Nina and Celestia rolled the thing off him."You could have finished that in one stroke," Celestia said. She said it quietly, so that Nina would not hear."I know.""Then why didn't you?"He sat up and looked at the sword. The crack had not grown. He could not have said whether that was
CHAPTER 57: Ask the Mountain
The eyes in the pillar followed them as far as the next turning. Ethan felt them on the back of his neck the whole way, and when he glanced back at the corner, the green light was still falling across the floor where they had been standing, patient, like a lamp left burning in a window for somebody who is not coming home. Then the corridor bent, and the pillar was gone, and they came out into a round chamber with dragons carved all the way around its walls. It was the carvings that moved. The dragons brightened one after another, as if something were running around the frieze behind them, and out of the brightest came a ball of black mist the size of a barrel, rolling and seething, with tendrils coming off it that groped along the floor toward them. Where they touched the stone, the stone went grey and cracked.Nina threw herself sideways. A tendril raked her right forearm as she went.Ethan swung at the edge of the thing and felt the sword go into it and out again without meeting anyt
CHAPTER 58: Golem Guardians
The stair went down in a tight spiral, so narrow that Nina's hammer scraped the walls on both sides. It went down for a long time. At the bottom there was a doorway, and past the doorway a round chamber so large their torches did not reach its far wall.It was domed, the ceiling carved with great solemn dragons with their wings folded, like figures on a tomb. Pillars stood in a ring around the edge of the floor. And in the middle of the floor, in a row, facing the door they had come in by, stood three giants. They were made. Stone and dark iron fitted together in plates, with seams between them that glowed a dull red, and each had a horned head carved in the likeness of a dragon's and two chips of red crystal for eyes. The tallest was twice Ethan's height and held a greatsword of the same dark iron with its point resting on the floor. The other two had no weapons. Their hands were as big as cart wheels. At the foot of the tallest one, on the flagstones in front of it, lay a dwarf. He h
CHAPTER 59: Mistveil Heart
The passage beyond the golems ran straight and level for a long way, and got warmer with every step. By the end of it the stone under Ethan's hand was as warm as a cat's back, and there was a light ahead that was not torchlight, and a sound that he had been hearing for so long through the rock that he had almost stopped noticing it.Breathing. Close now.A great door stood at the end of the passage. It was carved in the likeness of two dragons facing each other, and as they came up to it, it slid aside into the wall without anyone touching it, slowly, grinding, as if the mountain had decided they might as well come in.The heart of Mistveil was a cavern the size of a cathedral, and it was full of fire and gold. The gold was everywhere. It lay in drifts against the walls, coins and cups and chains, with the hilts of old swords standing up out of it. There were bones in it too. A great many bones. Some of them still wore armor. Near the door, half-buried in coin, Ethan saw a round iron s
CHAPTER 60: Platinum Adventurer Award
They carried the shield down the mountain between them, in turns. It was a round iron shield with a bronze fist painted on it, gone black and blistered on one side where the dragon's fire had caught it, and it was heavier than it looked. Nobody had asked Ethan to bring it. He had gone back for it after the dwarves came out of the deep hall, while Nina was still holding on to her father, and had dug it out of the coin with his hands and put it on his back, and had not been able to explain why, when Celestia looked at him, except that it had seemed wrong to leave it there. The Guild party that went up after the caravans had been five people. He found three of their tags in the gold near the shield. The other two he did not find. The doors of the Adventurers' Guild of Carosso stood open when they got back, and there was so much noise coming out of them that Ethan stopped on the steps."You're going to have to go in," said Nina."I know.""They've been drinking since noon. The whole east s
