CHAPTER 51
Liam's POV“Mom! Mom, are you here?” My voice echoed in the quiet house. What if Blackwood had… no I couldn’t even think about it.I slammed into the first door and it broke open. “Mom!” I shouted while kicking through the mess into the living room. It was empty. I looked around for signs of a struggle or danger. The pastries and flowers I bought were now scattered on the floor.Next door was the kitchen and I didn’t hesitate. Another kick, another crash and I was inside calling her name again. Some utensils rattled and a vase almost fell but my mom wasn’t there.I could barely breathe. I was losing it. I couldn’t think straight. Blackwood’s words still rang in my head.. “You don’t want to see me angry.” Was this his anger? Was this what he could do?Then I heard a door click open and a soft voice. “Liam? What in the world…?”I spun around almost tripping in my hurry. My mom stood in the hallway wrapped in a towel with her hair wet. She looked confused.“Liam what's going on? Are
CHAPTER 52
Ryan's POVMy father William Blackwood was like a snake and Sergio the sweaty little man across from him was about to feel the bite. I leaned back pretending to listen to what was being discussed even though I was as bored as anything. This act was tiring but necessary.“Sergio.” My father's voice was smooth and almost too calm. I knew him well enough to know that this was when he was more dangerous. “Tell me again how a club that serves... important people loses money especially when we give them the best product?”Sergio stammered while wiping his forehead with a fancy handkerchief. “Mr Blackwood, I swear it was just... bad luck. Some big spenders and some... unexpected costs…”“Unexpected costs? Like what Sergio? Paying off the police twice? Because I remember you doing that already!” My father slammed his fist on the table making Sergio jump while glass rattled dangerously.Okay this was getting interesting now and I focused my attention on their little exchange.I knew the ‘loss
CHAPTER 53
Liam's POVI willed my Mazda 6 into a stop one block from Northwood High. I turned off the engine and the car went quiet with only a soft sound from the dashboard. Cole’s car was parked halfway through the school gates. Something felt really wrong. I couldn’t shake the bad feeling I got when I saw his car there. Why was he here at night and why did the security men Immediately grant him entrance?I looked at my watch. Alice would be waiting for me soon. We had a dinner reservation but I really needed to check this out quickly before returning to my earlier plans.. At the moment I pushed the date to the back of my mind and I was too busy wondering why Cole was back at school.“Damn it,” I said while trying to decide what to do. I hoped Alice would understand. This felt important.I took out my phone and quickly typed a message. “Running late. Something came up. Can I pick you up in an hour?” I sent it and hoped she wouldn’t be too upset.I got out of the car and pulled my jacket hoo
CHAPTER 54
Liam's POVI pulled the door open slowly with the hinges making a loud groan.I stepped inside and closed the door. The lock clicked shut again. It was almost completely dark. Only a little light came through the windows high on the walls.I waited in silence, half expecting someone to jump me and wrestle me to the ground but nothing happened and all I got was just silence.“Cole?” I whispered quietly into the darkness. No answer.I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight. The beam of light showed some old and rusty lockers. Okay this was starting to get creepy. Why was Ryan a jealous guardian of an old locker room? The room was bigger than I thought with Lockers stretched out into the darkness. I moved the light back and forth looking for Cole. Nothing. No one.“Cole?” I called again and a little bit louder this time.Still nothing.Where did he go? People don’t just disappear. Especially not in a locked room.I moved forward slowly with my senses sharp and highly on alert.
CHAPTER 55
Liam's POV I drove smoothly through the city heading to a restaurant I thought Alice would really like. It was called “La Bella Notte.” hidden on a quiet street and known for its amazing view of the city lights. It's the kind of place people go for big events or to make important business deals. When we got close I saw Alice’s eyes get wide. “Liam.” she said with surprise. “Is this... is this La Bella Notte?”“It is.” I said as I pulled into valet parking. She looked around clearly impressed but also surprised. .“Wow.” she said quietly then looked at me with a smile. “Do you always have to go this big?”I laughed and opened her door. “Is it too much?”“Too much? It’s… beautiful! But seriously Liam I didn’t know you were this expensive.”I shrugged and held out my arm for her. “Let’s just say I saved up for this.” I wasn’t ready to tell her about my big and surprising Change in financial status. It was too.. too weird to bring up over dinner.Inside the restaurant, everything fe
CHAPTER 56
Liam's POVKill her? My mom? I slammed my foot on the gas pedal and the engine roared loudly as the car speed went up. My heartbeat immediately increased as adrenaline coursed through my veins.. I had just moved her into that apartment, the one Hans said was safe, which was supposed to be a place to protect her from the Blackwood family. How did they find her?My hands shook as I grabbed my phone and quickly called Hans with one hand still on the steering wheel. As soon as he answered, I shouted.“Hans!” My voice broke with fear. “You were wrong, Hans! You were so wrong!”He was silent for a moment. Then I heard his calm voice which was the opposite of mine. “Liam? Liam, calm down. What’s going on? What happened?”“What happened?!” I yelled while swerving to avoid a taxi. “Charles just warned me! He said a killer squad has been sent to the safehouse you chose for my mom!”I could almost hear the gears turning as Hans thought. “Oh no,” he said softly. “Are you sure? Can we trust Char
CHAPTER 57
Ryan's POVI sat motionlessly in the car with my stomach twisting with dread that I managed to keep in check. I was breathing fast and shallow, but it didn’t help calm me down. Just two blocks away, the apartment building sat quiet in the fading light of the day. It looked normal and innocent, nothing like the horror that was about to happen inside its rooms.“Boss,” Cole called restlessly beside me. “We should go. Waiting here is a waste of time.“I cut him off with the words flying out before I could stop them. “Shut up, Cole!” I was even surprised by how angry I sounded. I saw his eyebrows go up in the rearview mirror, but he wisely stayed quiet for his own good.I hated this. Hated all of it. I closed my eyes and again saw Liam’s face strong and stubborn as usual. I liked that about him. I even wished I could be like him. But under all his confidence and stubbornness, there was also a soft part in him. A soft side that popped up whenever his mom was mentioned and that made this
CHAPTER 58
Liam's POVMy stomach dropped as I watched people move behind the curtains on the second floor. They were here. They had found her.I held the car door tightly with my knuckles turning white while my heart threatened to explode. I had no weapon and no plan, but that didn’t matter. My mom was inside. I couldn’t just wait. I had to do something.I got out of the car while breathing hard. I had nothing to fight with, not even a small knife. But if my mom was with those Blackwood men I had to go in no matter what.Just as I was about to walk toward the building my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Hans. My hands were shaking as I answered.“Liam, thank God,” Hans said, sounding very relieved. “I got her. I got your mom.”I froze. I felt like I had been punched. “What? What do you mean?”“They were not yet there when I got there. I saw them arriving, but luckily for me, they were still getting ready, so I got her out before they went in. She’s safe Liam. She’s with me.”I felt so relieved
CHAPTER 59
Liam's POV“Wow, that's amazing!” Sarah said loudly with her eyes wide open with surprise after I had finished telling her what I was up to.I shifted in my seat uncomfortably. Everything that had happened lately felt like too much to carry. “It’s more than just amazing, Sarah,” I said with my voice quiet, yet serious. “It’s scary. Really scary. I’m at the point now where I worry about anyone who even looks at me. Just being near me could put someone in danger. People could get hurt just because they know me.” I ran my hand through my hair. I always did that when I was nervous. I couldn’t seem to stop it no matter how hard I tried. “My mom almost got hurt because of all this. It was close… too close.”Sarah rolled her eyes at me. Usually that annoyed me because she did it a lot, but tonight, it actually made me feel a little better. Something about her being herself helped. “Liam, comon. Relax. I’m not helpless. I know how to take care of myself. I’m not some girl who’s just sittin
CHAPTER 60
Liam's POVThe sun was already going down marking the end of a day, but the beginning of our mission. Sarah fixed her backpack as we walked to the subway station. “Okay Carter, ready to go on an underground adventure?”I checked the flashlight in my hand. “As ready as I’ll ever be. But… remind me again why do we need a map? Don’t you have some kind of super-smart GPS in your brain?”Sarah smiled and pulled out a wrinkled paper map from her pack. “Even super smart people like real paper sometimes. And the subway is like a big puzzle. We need to be careful if we’re going under the school. We don’t want to get lost… or hit by a train.”I gulped. “Right, trains. I really don’t like that part.” We mixed in with the people heading home after work trying to look like normal students from Crestwood High. Sarah looked calm. I probably looked like I was about to rob the place.“Relax, Liam,” Sarah whispered. “You look fine. Just stop looking at everyone like you think they’re going to attack
