CHAPTER 61
Liam's POVDust and echoes filled the air immediately, with my heart pounding fast. I held Sarah tighter behind the big concrete pillar trying to make us both small and unseen. The shooting had stopped, but I still felt scared.“What the hell was that?!” Ryan shouted with his voice loud in the tunnel. “I didn’t say you could shoot! Do you want to get us all killed?”People mumbled sorry, but it was hard to hear over the water dripping and the sound of faraway trains. “Sorry, Mr. Blackwood, sir. I just reacted. I saw a flash...”“Reacted?! You nearly ruined everything! Be quiet!” Ryan yelled.I heard boots scraping on the floor. His men were moving, sounding nervous. He was close. Too close. Then total silence.“Who’s there?” Ryan called out with his voice sharp and angry. “I know someone’s there. Come out. Now. Or I swear...”He didn’t finish his threat...“We’re okay,” I whispered to Sarah, barely moving my lips. “He didn’t really see us. Just saw light. He’s guessing.”Sarah’s eyes
CHAPTER 62
Liam's POV I woke up suddenly with my neck hurting.. I had fallen asleep here right in the middle of my messy thoughts going over last night again and again. Sarah, Ryan and the tunnel… It all felt like a bad dream. A real scary dream. My head hurt in a dull way. Was it because the excitement had worn off after running for our lives or was I just sick? Probably both.I pushed myself off the couch.. I walked into the tiny bathroom and splashed cold water on my face and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked awful. But I guess that made sense considering everything.A shower helped a bit. It washed off some of the dirt and fear. Then I walked to the kitchen and I needed coffee. The coffee maker made its usual sounds filling the small room with its smell while it brewed. I grabbed my phone. It was early but I wanted to hear her voice.I called my mom, and it rang a few times before she answered.“Liam? Is everything okay? It's so early over here.” Her voice sounded sleepy.“Yeah, Mom e
CHAPTER 63
Liam's POVMy heart pounded fast as I ran the last block to Sarah’s house. The street was very quiet…too quiet. Every sound like leaves moving or a car horn far away made me feel jumpy. I had to see her. I had to know she was okay. She hadn’t answered any of my calls and I kept imagining something bad had happened. Something that was my fault.Sarah’s mom opened the door before I even knocked. Her face, which was usually smiling, looked worried. She saw me and her eyes softened a bit.“Liam, thank goodness it’s you!” she said, stepping aside. “Sarah’s… busy. Please be careful.”She knew. Somehow she already knew something was wrong. My stomach felt tight.“Thank you ma'am,” I said as I walked inside.Inside the house I could hear the hum of electronics. I stepped into the front room which was dark except for the light coming from three big screens at Sarah’s desk. They showed lines of computer code and parts of messages she had hacked. Sarah was sitting at the desk typing fast. She d
CHAPTER 64
Liam's POVBefore Sarah and I could leave I pulled out my phone. “Just in case,” I said softly while typing a quick message to Hans. I told him everything we knew about the location, the time and what we thought about Blackwood being involved and then I hit send.“Backup huh?” Sarah said, looking over my shoulder.“Always,” I said. “Let's go.”Driving to the warehouse area felt like heading into a monster’s mouth.. We parked a block away, turned off the headlights and let the car roll to a stop.“Ready?” I asked while checking my flashlight like a gun tucked into my pants.Sarah nodded. Her face looked serious, but brave. “Let’s do it.”We moved quietly hiding in the dark.. The windows were boarded up. The main door was open just a little.I pushed it open a little more... I lifted my hand to tell Sarah to wait. I went in first with my flashlight showing the way.Inside it was huge and empty and my flashlight moved across the walls showing graffiti and broken old machines.“Hello?” I
CHAPTER 65
Liam's POVSoon enough, I pulled into the police station's parking lot. The pictures from the warehouse still lingered freshly in my mind with the scenes of Blackwood’s crimes making me angry. I turned off the car, grabbed the envelope with the pictures and walked quickly into the station.Inside, the atmosphere was filled with normal police sounds… phones ringing, people typing and hushed talking. A tired looking officer sat behind the front desk chewing gum and making loud pops.“I need to see Sheriff Grey,” I said with my voice tense and urgent. “It's very important.”The officer barely looked at me. “Do you have an appointment?”“No, but this can’t wait. It’s about William Blackwood.”That caught his attention, but not how I hoped. He raised his eyebrow and looked a little amused. “Blackwood, huh? Look kid, everyone wants to see the Sheriff. Take a seat. He’ll get to you when he can.”“But it’s urgent! I have evidence of crimes, proof of illegal stuff!” I said while holding up t
CHAPTER 66
Liam's POV Sheriff Grey stood up too with his face red with anger. “You do that and you’ll regret it Mr. Carter. You’re messing with dangerous people here and you don't even realize it. You have no idea what you’re getting into.”“I know exactly who I’m fighting,” I said. “A criminal, a murderer and someone who thinks he’s untouchable. And I’m not scared of him.”Grey stared at me for a long moment. Then he turned toward the door. “Locke!” he called loudly.A young deputy quickly came to the door. “Sheriff?”“Deputy Locke, I want you to go with Mr. Carter to the warehouse he’s talking about. Take a look. See if he’s telling the truth.”Locke looked unsure. “You want me to go with him? You really think there’s something there?”“I don’t know,” Grey said tiredly. “But I can’t have this kid running around spreading lies without checking. So go. If he’s lying, bring him back.”Locke nodded. “Yes sir.” He turned to me. “Alright, Mr. Carter let’s go.”I nodded while feeling a spark of
CHAPTER 67
Liam's POV The sting of the taser still pulsed through my muscles as Deputy Locke guided me none too gently into the back of the police cruiser. I didn't resist. What was the point? Struggling would only make things worse. As the car pulled away from the docks I stared out the window with the lights of the warehouse fading into the darkness. The whole thing felt surreal, like a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.Blackwood. He was always a step ahead. Every time I thought I had him cornered he'd slip away leaving me looking like a fool. I clenched my fists with my anger boiling beneath my skin. All the stress, the sleepless nights and the endless planning... for nothing. He walked away yet again smug and untouchable while I was being carted off to the station. The only sound that disturbed our ride back was the hum of the engine and the occasional crackle of the police radio. I kept my gaze fixed outside while trying to block out the humiliation and frustration. But the silence was
CHAPTER 68
Liam's POVThe car door slammed shut with the sound echoing in the quiet suburban street. I walked towards my porch still with the weight of the day pressing down on me. Sarah and Hans were already there perched on the steps with a picture of uneasy anticipation. This was the first time they’d met.I approached with my steps heavy all the way. Hans who was usually sporting a smirk widened his eyes when he saw me approach. “Liam,” he began with a surprised tone in his voice. “I had no idea you had such a… charming and witty acquaintance. I'm disappointed, my friend. Really disappointed that you kept this little secret from me.” He gestured towards Sarah with a flourish, with his cigarette dangling slightly from his lips.I didn't even bother wasting time on pleasantries. I snatched the cigarette from his mouth with the gesture sharp and decisive and then tossed it into the overflowing ashtray next to the porch swing. “Hans,” I said with my voice flat. “Sarah. Sarah, Hans.” Introducti
CHAPTER 69
Liam's POVThree days until freedom. Three days until I could finally escape the suffocating walls of Crestwood High. Three days too many. Ryan's absence had become a constant and unsettling normalcy in the background of my already strained life. He had been drifting in and out of school like a ghost, silent and withdrawn which was a stark contrast to his usual boisterous arrogance. It was unnerving.I like to keep my enemies where I can see them, and with Ryan skipping school, I had no idea of what he was up to and this left me uneasy.I pulled into the parking lot with the familiar scent of exhaust fumes and stale asphalt of the school's driveway filling my nostrils. As I reached for my bag, I saw them.. Melissa bathed in the reflected sunlight off a gleaming cherry red convertible, surrounded by a group of giggling girls. The car. It had to be. Ryan’s pathetic attempt at showing that he was wealthy enough to have her or maybe just proving something to himself.Even though I shoul
CHAPTER 70
Liam's POVThe hall was full of soft noise as glasses clinked and people talked softly. I stood just inside the doorway wearing a tuxedo and quietly watching. Rich and important people walked by. Most didn’t look at me. They thought I was just another worker for the night. I could almost hear what they were saying though. “Some young guy from catering. Probably doesn’t know what he’s doing.”I smiled a little. Let them believe that. When people don’t know who you really are it can be a good thing. Then I saw one of Blackwood’s helpers come in. I also noticed some people from high school who used to laugh at me. I guess they were invited too. Charles had done the right thing. Each new person who arrived made me feel a little more nervous. I kept looking around the room, hoping to find someone I knew. I wanted to see a friendly face in the middle of all this money and power. Then she came in.Everything else faded away. Sarah. She moved with a calm style that didn’t match her usual st
