CHAPTER 111
The drive back from the lake was silent, though it was clear that Nora had a dozen things to say. She kept glancing at Nicholas, silently asking for permission to speak, but he didn't even look at her. If she was serious about talking, she would. And sure enough, she spoke up just as they were driving into his place."Do you think she'll do it?" she asked."What do you think?" he replied. "Do you think she will?""No. Not if she's smart," Nora said immediately.Nicholas laughed like she had just said something naive. Nora couldn't believe the way that laughter grated on her nerves.Since when had she become the sort of person Nicholas laughed at like that? Such an act used to be reserved for people like Despero and the likes of other fools that had dared to cross Nicholas.'Just how far have I fallen in his sight?' she thought. 'Is he going to discard me one of these days?'She could feel that old fear rising up within her, no matter how hard she tried to push it down. The fear that sh
CHAPTER 112
Nadya found herself pacing a lot recently. Like today, when she was walking from one end of the living room to the other, waiting for news from the spy she had sent to get information about Harold. It wasn't the first time she had sent one, and she knew it might not be the last time. All the others she sent before had mysteriously disappeared. At this rate, she was not going to have any henchmen left. Her phone suddenly rang, interrupting her thoughts. It took her a moment to recognize the burner phone number. It was the number she had given her spy, so that he could contact her if he needed to, without anybody being able to trace the call."Does he have any information?" she mused.Or was it a trap? She couldn't rule out either possibility. So she picked the call, but waited for the person on the other end to speak first."Mrs Nadya," the spy spoke.Nadya silently exhaled with relief."Yes?" she said. "Where are you? Why are you calling? Did you find out anything?"There was silence

Time seemed to have stopped.Nicholas and Nora stood still in that room. At their feet was Nadya, lying dead in a pool of her own blood. Their eyes were fixed on the open door swinging from side to side. The door through which Asphalt had made his escape only a moment ago. Finally, Nora broke the deafening silence."We should go after him," she said. "He couldn't have gone that far. We can still catch up to him, and—""And what, Nora?" Nicholas cut in.The tone of his voice startled her. It sounded bland, like he was suppressing an outburst of emotion. She hesitated before answering."And kill him, of course," she said. "He was always going to be a problem, but after what happened here? There's no telling what he might do. Eliminating him takes priority right now."Nicholas gave her a look like he couldn't believe she was saying this."After what just happened…" he said. "Why is that all you can think of?""What?" she replied, confused. "What do you mean, Young Master? What else am I
CHAPTER 114
Talking to Natalie was the right move, after all. Nicholas couldn't believe that he ever treated her like a child. She was much smarter than he gave her credit for. And, as always, her advice was priceless. She had been right when she said that the consortium was changing him. Not only that, but it was destroying him too. It was turning him into the sort of person the old him would have despised.Since when had he decided that killing people was the only way to get things done, anyway? There were better ways to fulfill his goals. There were ways to defeat the founding fathers without stooping to their level, and he was sticking to that from now on.Nicholas was still thinking of this as he arrived at his house. Even though it was almost dawn, Nora was up, waiting for him. For some reason, he wasn't surprised to switch on the living room light and find her sitting straight as a ramrod on a sofa."You're back," she said with obvious relief."As if I'd be the type to run away," Nicholas
CHAPTER 115
For his next trick, Asphalt had chosen to vanish into thin air. Not only had he disappeared completely from Nicholas's radar, but he was apparently not anywhere in the city, either."Or maybe that's just what he wants you to think," Nora said while she and Nicholas discussed it."My thoughts exactly," he replied. "This vanishing act might be just another ploy for attention. I wouldn't put it past Asphalt. He must have learnt that I've chosen to come after him, and decided to turn it into a hide and seek.""That way, he can make this into even more of a big deal," Nora added. "Remember that the whole point of this is to send a message to the other founding fathers.""So what do you think he plans to do next?" Nicholas asked. "Is he that certain that I won't be able to find him?""I think he intends for you to find him, actually," Nora replied. "That's why he's setting up this whole charade. So that you'll come after him instead of the other way round. Whatever he plans to do, it's nece
CHAPTER 116
More news was out before the day's end.If the tabloids and social media were to be believed, Nicholas had killed his own mother in order to be the only rightful inheritor of his father's fortune. Not only that, but he had used her body parts to create ornaments that were now being sold in the market. He had also murdered his father, apparently, because he could not wait to run the Belford consortium. All that in addition to abusing his ex-wife and kicking her out the moment he learnt of his heritage. Oh, and every drug produced by the Zavion Tower ever since Nicholas took over was fake and adulterated. Just in case anybody cared to know."Wow," Nora muttered flatly when she saw the headlines. "Asphalt is really pulling his punches, huh? He's very committed to this smear campaign.""And that's what's going to be the end of him," Nicholas replied. "While he's so focused on ruining my reputation, he won't even know what hit him.""You won't try to refute the accusations?" Nora asked."W
CHAPTER 117
"How soon can we get into this room of his?" Nicholas asked."Roughly half an hour, give or take," Nora replied, tapping furiously into the tablet on her hand. She had connected it to the central computer in the place, and hadn't looked up from it for what felt like forever."Make it less than that," he said."What the—" she exclaimed, finally looking up. "I wish I could obey that order, Young Master, but hacking isn't magic. And there are too many codes involved in the security of this place. Cracking them will take time.""Enough time for Asphalt to make his escape?""You don't need to worry about that, Young Master," she assured him. "Asphalt knows that he's only safe because he's in that room. He's not stupid enough to leave it. And even if he does, Kabuto and the rest of the ghosts are watching every corner of this building. He won't get far. More importantly…"She hesitated, wondering if it would be wise to continue."More importantly?" Nicholas prodded.Nora hesitated, then dec
CHAPTER 118
The very next day brought a call from Natalie."Nicky!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with relief. "You finally picked up. I couldn't get through to you no matter how hard I tried. What's been going on? Are you alright?""I'm fine," he replied. "Thanks for your concern. You didn't have to…"It was awkward, talking to her in such a formal way. But he just wasn't certain how to react to this display of genuine care. He wasn't used to it, after all. It made him feel warm from the inside, but it also left him stumped on how to respond."Of course I'm concerned!" Natalie exclaimed. "You've seen the news, right? I've been freaking out since the rumors came out. Don't worry, I don't believe any of those lies. But everyone else seems to. Even Jessica. She's so sure they're true, because according to her, there was always something off about you. But I think she just doesn't like you for some reason."'And she refused to contact him because of that, even after saying she would,' Natalie fume
CHAPTER 119
He knew it was the sort of behavior Nora would call weak, but Nicholas went to see Natalie, anyway. Even though he had just been to see her a short while ago. She had asked that he call her that night, so he figured that she wouldn't mind if he showed up again so soon. Despite how unbothered he had acted before Kabuto, he was actually a bit agitated about the current situation. And whenever he felt like that, the only place he could go was to Natalie. If there was a new person targeting Belfords, it couldn't be good for him. Even if their only target had been Asphalt, with the way his body had just been dumped somewhere, Nicholas could tell that the culprit was not only capable but ruthless as well. In his experience, that could only mean trouble. As he thought, Natalie was startled to see him, but more than that, she was excited."I was just thinking about the next time you'd visit," she said, hugging him tightly.Nicholas hugged her back. He was reluctant to let go. In her arms, it
CHAPTER 120
The minutes that followed next were the most awkward ones of Natalie's entire life. She and Nicholas cuddled up on the sofa: her legs were tucked in beside her on the chair, and her body was snuggling with his, while his arm wrapped around her. They were watching a movie on his phone, sharing one pair of earplugs. It should have been a moment right out of Natalie's best dreams. Except that it was ruined by one huge problem.Nora.Nora sat on the sofa, across from them, scrolling silently through her phone. She was playing the role of the uninterested bodyguard, but Natalie knew she was watching them. Not only watching, but judging them loudly with her eyes. Natalie still couldn't understand how come Nicholas was aware of this.'He is so used to not expecting the worst from Nora,' she sighed. Not that this was the worst, she reminded herself. Nora didn't like her because she thought she was a burden to Nicholas. That was Nora's opinion, and it wasn't changing anytime soon.Natalie coul
