CHAPTER 101
“Where do you want to start, Master?” Hagan asked while he followed Nicholas closely behind. They were heading back to the car“We need to customize the system. Some things are no longer as father and mother had planned it. For starters, Father predicted he would be the target at the Super Summit, he wasn’t, I was. The bullet barely missed me. When I see the system, I will know what to change. Before we customize the system though we need to look into something. Father’s enemies – By that I mean everyone that he wronged and anyone that wrong him who he took care of. We need to be sure that all the people we are taking out are restricted to the founding fathers of the Belford family. I don’t want surprises.”Nicholas got in the back and sat down, resting on the seat. Hagan got in front, starting the ignition.“Should Nora and I be working together on this?”“No. Things will get tougher as we go down this road. You or her might get capture. I don’t want any of you knowing all my plans
CHAPTER 102
The sunlight from the window settled on her scarred face. She sighed a little, moving her head to hide her eyes from the rays. She muttered a curse under her breath because the sunlight still hurt her eyes anyway, then she opened her eyes and raised herself slowly up on the bed. Her gaze went around the room, the first thing she saw was Nicholas, still in a suit shirt and plain trousers, leaning against a seat and sleeping.Seeing him brought back the memory of how he and her ended up here. Unintentionally, a warm smile pulled up her lips. To think he actually spent the night watching over her. Immediately she thought of that, her gut twisted and her smile vanished, replaced by the sad feeling of guilt. Her mind took a moment to think of all the things he did for her because he trusted her without knowing she had been betraying that trust since the beginning. She sighed, somewhere deep down in her heart she felt like she might be a monster because of this. She clicked her tongue, look
CHAPTER 103
Nadya had never been much of a drinker. In fact, she prided herself on it. Drinking made you sloppy, and sloppy people did stupid things. She hadn't come this far or survived this long by being stupid. But it gets to a point.Sometimes, stuff just happened, and she had to unlock her liquor cabinet. Except that right now, she felt like hurling the glass at the wall instead of drinking from it. She clenched her fist around it, cursing under her breath."Damn it," she hissed. "Damn them all."Damn Eres, and that upstart he called his son. Damn Harold and the lot of them; always conspiring to take what was hers.Everything was supposed to work out.She was supposed to get rid of Eres that day, along with all those who could get in her way. Her relatives might be scum, but at least they respected power.Whoever was able to seize the power of patriarch got to keep it. That was the unspoken rule in their family. Everyone else would try to snatch it by hook or crook, of course, but at least t
CHAPTER 104
When normal people got terribly injured, they usually spent the whole recovery time in bed. But Nora, being Nora, was dragging Nicholas around a mall as soon as she could walk without falling over."This is a funeral, not a gala," Nicholas reminded her for the millionth time."That's just what you think," she replied in that mysterious way of hers.Nicholas waited, but she went on scrutinizing a row of black tuxedos like she was trying to find a flaw, humming under her breath."Well?" he said. "Are you going to explain?"She gave him a smile that said she had been waiting for this question."Do you want to take a guess?" she asked.Nicholas gave it some thought."I take it that funerals in the Belford family aren't actually for mourning the deceased?" he said wryly."Bingo," she replied. "So you know what to expect."Of course he did.All the founding fathers were gathering once more, right after the death of the patriarch. Right after his identity as the patriarch's successor had bee
CHAPTER 105
". . . What has been happening?"Natalie could feel her heart pounding for some reason. Nora turned around to look at her, and although the other woman's face was expressionless, a slight chill still went down Natalie's spine. She took a deep breath and tried to maintain a determined demeanour."Why should I tell you?" Nora asked."Because I care about Nicholas," Natalie replied immediately. She needed to convince Nora. "And I want to know, if there's anything I can do to help him—"'His father is dead,' Nora thought coldly. 'What can you do about that, Cinderella?'But she couldn't say that. That information wasn't hers to reveal, especially not to this little princess."What you can do," she said instead, "is stay right here like he told you to. Don't do anything stupid. If you get hurt, it will hurt him too. And I will not forgive you for that, Natalie."With that, she began to leave. Natalie's fists clenched with frustration at her sides. Her mouth opened and closed, a thousand wo
CHAPTER 106
Nora had been right. The patriarch's funeral was nothing like a funeral. In fact, it looked more like a Briggerton themed party. The members of the Belford family were walking around in their best dinner clothes, sampling hors d'oeuvres and sipping champagne, talking and laughing. There were enough guests in that hall to fill a football field, all of them dignitaries from every corner of the world, and not a single one looked like they were there to mourn anybody.Instead, they looked like they were celebrating something. As Nicholas walked in, he had to tamp down the urge to set this place on fire with all the despicable people inside it. He could hear Nora's voice like she was right next to him.'All eyes will be on you at that event. More than ever, you must appear unaffected by anything that has happened.'All eyes were indeed on him. He could feel the people gawking at him, no matter how hard they tried to pretend like they weren't watching his every move. One particular glare st
CHAPTER 107
The video continued to play, despite Nadya's shrill screams for someone to turn it off. Everyone present seemed transfixed on the scene being displayed. It was of Nadya smirking down at her twin sister, who was being tortured by her henchmen. The original Nadya's screams echoed in the pin drop silence, filling the room with the agonized sounds. Then the exclamations began; shock and condemnation erupting from the guests as all eyes turned to Nadya. The woman in question was still running around like a headless chicken, trying to find someone that could put an end to the video. She grabbed one servant after another, shaking them and screaming in their faces to "stop this nonsense right this instant!"Unfortunately for her, nobody moved. While Nicholas watched her make a fool of herself, he tried to hold back a grin. He knew that at least two of the founding fathers were watching him. And while he didn't care whether or not they suspected him— in fact, he wanted them to. They probably a
CHAPTER 108
"Damn it!" Nadya shouted, throwing her coffee at the wall. "Who did this to me? How dare they?!"The assistants standing in a row against the wall flinched, watching her warily."What do you mean you can't do anything about this?" she screamed. "Get out, all of you! I don't want to see your faces ever again. In fact, you're fired!"The assistants knew better than to protest. They scurried out of the office like rats, and Nadya slumped into her seat, still fuming."How is this happening to me? Me!" she continued to complain. Her gaze returned to the tablet in front of her, and more specifically, to the article displayed on the screen. It had only been a week since it happened, but the incident at the funeral was already making headlines. Even worse, most of her customers had announced that they were going to boycott La Femme Fashion House, and were encouraging other people to do so as well. A well-known model already has millions of fans vowing to follow her example and avoid all La Fe
CHAPTER 109
"What do you mean?" Nadya asked, watching Nora warily. "What do you want me to do?"Nora grinned. It made her look like a cat that had cornered a mouse."Nothing much," she replied. "But first, you must be at the location I give you by ten pm tonight. You better not be late, or you're going to miss your one chance to recover from this situation. And I don't need to tell you that you're not getting another chance, do I?""What is it?" Nadya said. "What am I going there to do?""Oh, just to talk," Nora replied, making her voice sound extremely innocent on purpose. It worked in scaring Nadya even more. "My boss will be there to talk to you. And you better come alone.""And if I decide not to come at all?" Nadya said.Nora smiled. It wasn't her usual mischievous smile. This one was cold and sharp. It reminded Nadya of the glint of an axe's blade before it struck. A shiver went through her spine, and her hands shook with the need to get out of there as fast as she could. Being trapped in a
CHAPTER 110
Nadya kept staring incredulously at Nicholas, like she expected him to suddenly declare that he was joking.Unfortunately for her, that wasn't going to happen. He watched her calmly, waiting to see what she would do.Nadya was many things, but she wasn't a fool. She wouldn't have lasted this long as a founding father if she had been one.She was smart enough to understand her current situation. She had lost her reputation, her credibility as a CEO, and her place in the Belford family, all at once. She was about to suffer the very same fate she had killed her sister to avoid: becoming a nameless bottom feeder. It was clear to everybody present that she didn't trust Nicholas. In fact, she would be foolish to do so. But it was also clear that she didn't have any other hope. It wasn't like there were a lot of people lining up to help her. Still, it was one thing to know that you had no other choice, and it was another thing to set your pride aside and do something like this. When Nadya con
