CHAPTER 81
Time passed, the sun slowly began to creep out from the clouds. Nicholas lay awake, staring out the window. The hospital was hidden away by a lot of trees so even when the day was breaking, the leaves made the whole place seem like it was still evening.Nora stayed with him all night, in the quiet. At first it didn’t seem to be a bad thing that the room was silent but soon she began to realize that letting Nicholas stay like that for so long wasn’t very healthy.“Young master,” she whispered, breaking into the quiet. “I know it’s out of my place to ask this but I want to know if I should get things prepared for taking off over the last tower or if I should round up our people to look for the Patriarch instead.”Nora paused and waited. There was no reply. “Young Master. What’s happening to you? Please talk to me, you have been silent for a while. I am worried.”Nicholas glanced at her from the corner of his eyes. He heaved. “There is no need to be. There is nothing wrong. I’m just havi
CHAPTER 82
Nicholas scrolled through the messages again, while Nora drove to the wedding venue. It was a destination wedding. The venue was the Grand banquet halls of The beautiful Silver Crest Tower. According to Natalie, her father had chosen it because her sister worked there before she disappeared and he felt it would help him feel like she was close by or something like that.Nicholas’ face twisted in disgust. The more he read through the messages, the tighter his gut twisted. Everything about it made him feel sick. Apparently his ex, Sarah, was the family cash cow before she vanished. Now all eyes fell on Natalie. She was supposed to graduate and feed the family after that but something happened in their school and so exams were halted for a while. Shortly after, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and her father began to fear their luxurious life would vanish once they start paying the medical bills. Then some nosy rich guy who had been hovering around Natalie for a while got wind of the
CHAPTER 83
Nora tucked her gun back into its hostler and took out a checkbook. At the same time, Nicholas stepped out from the pew. Everyone watched in breathless silence as he guided himself to the altar, the aura of a Lord radiating off him. He gently placed a hand on Natalie’s veil and he took it off, tossing it away. Natalie looked up to him. Her makeup had been ruined by the perspiration on her face. He flashed her a warm smile.“Come Natalie. Let’s go.” He stretched out his hand. She took it and rose off the floor . Nicholas immediately put a hand behind her and swept her off her feet.“Uh.” She grasped, holding fast to his shirt; her cheeks flushed red. She buried her face on his chest, hiding so he wouldn’t notice.“Are you comfortable?” He asked in his never changing baritone voice. The way he sounded had gotten cruder, scarier but surprisingly, it didn’t scare her. It made her feel warm and safe. Nicholas squeezed her close to him and began his cold walk towards the door. Nora joined
CHAPTER 84
“What is it like then, Natalie?” His tone was deep and low but threatening. “Why is it so hard for me to see? You know what, don’t tell me. I’m not going to listen to any more excuses. When your father gave you up to the highest bidder, you did nothing. So technically you were prepared to serve him; to do whatever he wants.”Natalie took a step back, her leg hitting the bedframe. She was trapped. He stopped right in her face, and he whispered. “I’m the highest bidder now. I paid for you which means you get to do whatever I want. Natalie, take off your clothes.”Her eyes grew wider. “Nicky…”“Go on. Hurry. You were going to do this for that fat ugly bastard. What’s keeping you from doing it now? Come on. I don’t have all day. And why you are at it, do those fancy moves they used to show girls doing in all those porn movies.” He backed away, found a nice spot on the bed and sat down.“Make it interesting.”Natalie turned slowly, looking at him. There wasn’t a single twitch on his face
CHAPTER 85
Natalie’s lips pulled away, the tip of her tongue unintentionally grazing his mouth. She looked into his eyes, with her dreamy ocean blues. Nicholas gently pushed her back, placing her hands by her sides.“Don’t do that again.” He turned and walked away, slamming the door. Natalie crumbled to the floor, burying her face in her knees. She bit back a sob, trying to hold her tears. She sucked in a breath and exhaled. ‘I gave him the gift I have been planning for a long time. It’s alright. He doesn’t have to return my feelings’.Nicholas entered the elevator, Nora standing next to him. He licked his lips, savoring the aftertaste of the kiss. He heaved. Why does she have to catch feelings? Does she not realize even for a moment that she is making things hard for herself. He is supposed to be her brother, her guardian. He shouldn’t return those feelings.“Young master, we need to get off now.” Nora’s voice broke into his reverie. That’s when he noticed he had been standing in the elevator f
CHAPTER 86
Nora jumped down from the car. “Toss me the automatic.” She ordered, slotting her gun back into her hostler. Her minion inside the car, dislodges the hinges on the passenger seat and jacked it up, the automatic was lying like a sleeping devil, right beneath it. He threw the big gun to Nora. She grabbed it, cracked the neck and pushed the infer-red button on the side of her glasses. She stared down at the ground, the glasses peered past the sand and into the tunnel beneath them spotting where the group of assassins were coming from. Nora smiled. They looked like little ants that had no idea what was about to hit them. She cocked the gun. ‘See you in….”“Excuse me mam.” The informant broke right into her reverie. She raised her head slowly, glaring at him. Obviously she wasn’t pleased with the interruption. “Em… I know the automatic is a big gun and all but you got to be kidding me if you think the bullets in that gun will hit anyone like… I don’t know, 20 ft below the ground.”“3 ft.”
CHAPTER 87
The dust began to clear, the light revealing everything left standing. The car was shot up terribly. There were so many holes in it, the mobile was almost unrecognizable.Someone was still moving. It was Nora. She was on one knee, her clothes torn by many missed bullets that grazed her. She was bleeding everywhere but she still lifted herself up, throwing her head back and stroking the loose strands off her wet face. She looked behind her. Nicholas stepped out from the car. He was hit by a few bullets. His shirt was almost torn to shreds and the terrible scar on his torso was very obvious now.He came up to Nora, checking his magazine. His semi-automatic still has a few rounds more. He heaved, raising his head, his gaze shot right at a surveillance camera propped up from the ground. It hid immediately. Nicholas exasperated, grinning.“Guess we are not the only ones who watched the show. Well that means they should know by now that we are getting into that tower whether they live there
CHAPTER 88
Nora stopped, panting. She looked beside her, by the elevator. Nicholas was standing there. “Are we good?” Nora smiled at him. She tried to wave and winced. She had a bad shoulder. He came to her and took some cloth from one of the dead men. He tied her shoulder real tight.“It gets harder from here. We should try to cut them a different way. There is no sense in taking bullets and bleeding.”“Good point.” She groaned, straightening up. He handed her the automatic. She held it with her left hand. “There is still a very long way down this hall before we get to the elevator at the end of it. The fourth floor is the real buggy actually because that is the second to last floor. I have a feeling the boss is at the last floor.”“If that’s the case, then we shouldn’t waste our energy on this floor. We need to work about the fourth and fifth.” Nicholas looked at the elevator. “I guess we will have to drop down a few feet.”Nora nodded, taking out the phone. They override the controls on the e
CHAPTER 89
“You son of bitch.” Nicholas stormed off, stopping right in the patriarch’s face. “You must think this is funny? You must think killing people is some game. I mean I know I’m crazy, but you, you are fucking insane, you know that?”“I’m glad you figured that part out. It should help you know just why you are the way you are. All your murderous tendencies and everything else, I gave you all that. Oh hell, this conversation is not going anywhere good. Alright everybody, chop, chop,” he clapped his hand, pointing to the door. “Leave us, every last one of you. Get out, I need to talk to my son so vamos.”The body guards put down their guns, leaving first, and then Nora and the doctor followed. The room emptied before the patriarch shut the door. He turned to Nicholas. “This… It's awkward for you and for me. So how about we take it slow, Son?”Nicholas gave a very long stare. He heaved. “This isn’t awkward. It’s fucking ridiculous. But sure, let's start over. Let’s do that.” Nicholas sat do
CHAPTER 90
You will know after the summit is over. There are a lot of things that will change after that summit. Nicholas, my boy, I hope what I’m doing and what you are doing can prepare us for it.”“I’m guessing I can’t know what’s coming either. At least tell me this; who are those powers that you talked about. Who will come to the summit and what’s with the five towers? Two towers could have done the trick.”“You are right, the towers have a purpose. Their purpose is quite amusing actually.” The patriarch crossed his leg.“I use them to remind myself who the powers are. It reminds me of the hierarchy too. The consortium was first built by the blood members of the Belford family. That is; I, my brother Benedict, Harold the son of my mother's brother and the only surviving members of my mother’s side, then there is Nadya the wife of one of my dead brothers and finally her son, Asphalt. As our enterprises grew other smaller groups joined us in return for protection. The towers allowed me to gro
